A contemporary in-office dental procedure, laser
teeth whitening is typically recommended only
for those individuals who are not pregnant and
past adolescence, though some teenagers may
be approved for the treatment. Laser teeth
whitening begins with a screening by a dentist,
who examine a patient's teeth for exposed roots
and cavities. The dentist must fill any cavities
before applying the whitening compound, and
root exposure may make the patient ineligible
due to the likelihood of uneven bleaching.

For patients who experience sensitivity,
dentists may prescribe an anti-inflammatory
pain medication to be taken before the
procedure. On the day of the procedure, the
dentist will apply a protective shield to the
gums and coat the front of the teeth with a
whitening compound. A laser then activates
the compound, which lifts stains from the
teeth. The procedure typically lasts between
30 and 60 minutes.
