1) Evidence based cancer care (EBCC) refers to the integration of best available clinical evidence from research with clinical expertise in decision making for cancer patients. 2) There is a need for EBCC given the large number of conflicting cancer studies and clinical practice guidelines that are sometimes based on poor quality research. 3) Developing the skills to find, evaluate, and draw conclusions from all relevant cancer evidence takes practice and defines evidence based cancer care.

3. What is Evidence Based Cancer care (EBCC)
Evidence-based medicine (classic definition) :
"The conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of
individual patients."
The practice of evidence-based medicine "requires integration of clinical expertise with the best available
clinical evidence from systematic research; i.e. it is based on a
high level of evidence, which is preferably, but not exclusively, derived from randomized clinical trials.

4. Rationale for EBCC
■ In a complex field and rapidly changing as oncology, clinical
practice guidelines (CPG) are an important tool in patient care.
■ Despite around millions of published papers from clinical
trials; much of it presenting conflicting results, sometimes
derived from poor-quality research methodology.
■ Also, CPGs don't replace individual clinical expertise, and they can’t be used in the
absence of the patients’ specific information. Factors such as comorbidities and
individual preferences need to be considered.
■ The ability to find and evaluate all the relevant studies, and draw robust conclusions
from the totality of the evidence, takes skill and practice, and this is called
“Evidence Based Cancer care”

9. ■ OBJECTIVE: “To develop a consensus set of core competencies for health professionals in
EBP”
■ Core competencies defined as:
the essential minimal set of a combination of tributes, such as applied knowledge, skills, and
attitudes, that enable an individual to perform a tasks to an appropriate standard efficiently
and effectively.
