Mohammed Zeitoun, MD, is currently a lecturer at the Department of Diabetes &
Metabolism, Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University, Egypt.
In 2008, Dr. Zeitoun got his Master Degree from Alexandria University with his thesis
titled “Intensified insulin therapy during fasting of Ramadan in type 1 diabetic patients”.
He received his Doctorate of Internal Medicine (Diabetes & Metabolism) from
Alexandria University in 2013 with his thesis titled “Correlation of serum apelin level
with coronary calcium score in patients with suspected coronary artery disease”.
In 2013, Dr. Zeitoun completed a course on the clinical skills in diabetes management
from the Cardiff University School of Medicine, United kingdom, and he is currently
participating in the school’s online post graduate diabetes program. In 2014, he
completed a post graduate diabetes course from the St Andrews University, School of
Medicine, United Kingdom.
From 2008 – 2011, Dr. Zeitoun was the coordinator of the Diabetic Foot Care clinic of
the Alexandria University which offers preventive and therapeutic services for diabetic
patients having foot disorders. Advances in the management of diabetic foot disorders
remains an interest for him.
In 2012, Dr. Zeitoun designed a diabetes self-management education program for the
Alexandria Regional Centre for Women's Health and Development; this structured
diabetes course is presented jointly by diabetologist and a dietitian. Well received by
patients and health care professionals, the program is tailored to fit the habits and the
culture of the Egyptian community.
As one of the top international raising stars in the field of diabetology, in 2015, Dr
Zeitoun was honored as a “Donnell D. Etzwiler International Scholar” recipient and
accordingly he attended a special program at the International Diabetes Centre in
Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota,
United States.
2. Dr Zeitoun is currently part of a team studying Continuous Glucose Monitoring
(CGM) at the CGM Research Center in Alexandria University. His other research interest
includes management of diabetes during Ramadan, relation between diabetes and
depression, sexual dysfunction in diabetics and the prevalence of fear of hypoglycemia
(FOH) in Egyptian type 1 diabetics.
Dr Zeitoun is a recognized educator and has given more than 100 continuing medical
education (CME) talks to audiences comprising endocrinologists, internists, family
physicians, residents and diabetes educators in Egypt and abroad. Dr Zeitoun has
publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals and presented posters in
national and international congresses.
Besides his research work, he continues his clinical practice as a consultant of internal
medicine and diabetes in the Alexandria Main University Hospital providing his patients
with latest evidence-based diabetes care.
