Apache Kafka is a popular distributed streaming data platform. A Kafka cluster stores streams of records (messages) in categories called topics. It is the architectural backbone for integrating streaming data with a Data Lake, Microservices and Stream Processing. Data sources flowing into Kafka are often native data streams such as social media streams, telemetry data, financial transactions and many others. But these data stream only contain part of the information. A lot of data necessary in stream processing is stored in traditional systems backed by relational databases. To implement new and modern, real-time solutions, an up-to-date view of that information is needed. So how do we make sure that information can flow between the RDBMS and Kafka, so that changes are available in Kafka as soon as possible in near-real-time? Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5Q5GZheAEk Apache Hive is an open-source relational database system that is widely adopted by several organizations for big data analytic workloads. It combines traditional MPP (massively parallel processing) techniques with more recent cloud computing concepts to achieve the increased scalability and high performance needed by modern data intensive applications. Even though it was originally tailored towards long running data warehousing queries, its architecture recently changed with the introduction of LLAP (Live Long and Process) layer. Instead of regular containers, LLAP utilizes long-running executors to exploit data sharing and caching possibilities within and across queries. Executors eliminate unnecessary disk IO overhead and thus reduce the latency of interactive BI (business intelligence) queries by orders of magnitude. However, as container startup cost and IO overhead is now minimized, the need to effectively utilize memory and CPU resources across long-running executors in the cluster is becoming increasingly essential. For instance, in a variety of production workloads, we noticed that the memory bandwidth of early decoding all table columns for every row, even when this row is dropped later on, is starting to overwhelm the performance of single query execution. In this talk, we focus on some of the optimizations we introduced in Hive 4.0 to increase CPU efficiency and save memory allocations. In particular, we describe the lazy decoding (or row-level filtering) and composite bloom-filters optimizations that greatly improve the performance of queries containing broadcast joins, reducing their runtime by up to 50%. Over several production and synthetic workloads, we show the benefit of the newly introduced optimizations as part of Cloudera’s cloud-native Data Warehouse engine. At the same time, the community can directly benefit from the presented features as are they 100% open-source!

You faced a learning curve when you first started using Spark, and you’ll face a different learning curve as you start to develop reusable abstractions atop Spark. Data is increasingly becoming core to many products. Whether to provide recommendations for users, getting insights on how they use the product, or using machine learning to improve the experience. This creates a critical need for reliable data operations and understanding how data is flowing through our systems. Data pipelines must be auditable, reliable, and run on time. This proves particularly difficult in a constantly changing, fast-paced environment. Collecting this lineage metadata as data pipelines are running provides an understanding of dependencies between many teams consuming and producing data and how constant changes impact them. It is the underlying foundation that enables the many use cases related to data operations. The OpenLineage project is an API standardizing this metadata across the ecosystem, reducing complexity and duplicate work in collecting lineage information. It enables many projects, consumers of lineage in the ecosystem whether they focus on operations, governance or security. Marquez is an open source project part of the LF AI & Data foundation which instruments data pipelines to collect lineage and metadata and enable those use cases. It implements the OpenLineage API and provides context by making visible dependencies across organizations and technologies as they change over time.

These days companies are collecting more and more data. It’s up to data scientists to create business value out of that data. Typically this is done by training models based on historical data stored on HDFS. Once the model has been trained it is ready to be scored. At ING Bank we need to score models in real time, blocking potential fraudulent transactions before causing damage to either the customer or the bank. As fraudsters invent new ways to commit fraud, we also need to add new models on a running system, without downtime. In this talk we’ll present our implementation of a real time streaming analytics platform that enables us to dynamically change the behaviour of our stateful Flink application. The end result is an environment where end users are provided a DSL they can use to dynamically stream in new models into the Flink job as well as to change the transformations within the operators. This will give them full control of the streaming analytics platform at runtime.

This talk presents a genuine use case of ArangoDB's native multi-model approach, by means of the example of an e-commerce app. First the main advantages of a "multi-model" database are explained. Then we dive deep into the native multi-model database ArangoDB and its query language - AQL. We give an introduction to the three data-models ArangoDB covers (Documents, Graphs and Key-Values), and explain that AQL is a uniform query language that can cover all three data-models of ArangoDB, so no context switches are necessary. The major part of the talk will explain the data model and show concrete AQL queries that would occur in an e-commerce platform. Apache Phoenix is an OLTP and operational analytics for Hadoop. To ensure operations correctness, Phoenix requires that a transaction processor guarantees that all data accesses satisfy the ACID properties. Traditionally, Apache Phoenix has been using the Apache Tephra transaction processing technology. Recently, we introduced into Phoenix the support for Apache Omid—an open source transaction processor for HBase that is used at Yahoo at a large scale. A single Omid instance sustains hundreds of thousands of transactions per second and provides high availability at zero cost for mainstream processing. Omid, as well as Tephra, are now configurable choices for the Phoenix transaction processing backend, being enabled by the newly introduced Transaction Abstraction Layer (TAL) API. The integration requires introducing many new features and operations to Omid and will become generally available early 2018. In this talk, we walk through the challenges of the project, focusing on the new use cases introduced by Phoenix and how we address them in Omid. SQL is the most widely used language for data processing. It allows users to concisely and easily declare their business logic. Data analysts usually do not have complex software programing backgrounds, but they can program SQL and use it on a regular basis to analyze data and power the business decisions. Apache Flink is one of streaming engines that supports SQL. Besides Flink, some other stream processing frameworks, like Kafka and Spark structured streaming, have SQL-like DSL, but they do not have the same semantics as Flink. Flink’s SQL implementation follows ANSI SQL standard while others do not. In this talk, we will present why following ANSI SQL standard is essential characteristic of Flink SQL and how we achieved this. The core business of Alibaba is now fully driven by the data processing engine: Blink, a project based on Flink with Alibaba’s improvements. About 90% of blink jobs are written by Flink SQL. We will show the use cases and the experience of running large scale Flink SQL jobs at Alibaba in the talk. Databricks Runtime is the execution environment that powers millions of VMs running data engineering and machine learning workloads daily in Databricks. Inside Databricks, we run millions of tests per day to ensure the quality of different versions of Databricks Runtime. Due to the large number of tests executed daily, we have been continuously facing the challenge of effective test result monitoring and problem triaging. In this talk, I am going to share our experience of building the automated test monitoring and reporting system using Databricks. I will cover how we ingest data from different data sources like CI systems and Bazel build metadata to Delta, and how we analyze test results and report failures to their owners through Jira. I will also show you how this system empowers us to build different types of reports that effectively track the quality of changes made to Databricks Runtime.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry. In the thrilling conclusion to 2023, ransomware groups had a banner year, really outdoing themselves in the "make everyone's life miserable" department. LockBit 3.0 took gold in the hacking olympics, followed by the plucky upstarts Clop and ALPHV/BlackCat. Apparently, 48% of organizations were feeling left out and decided to get in on the cyber attack action. Business services won the "most likely to get digitally mugged" award, with education and retail nipping at their heels. Hackers expanded their repertoire beyond boring old encryption to the much more exciting world of extortion. The US, UK and Canada took top honors in the "countries most likely to pay up" category. Bitcoins were the currency of choice for discerning hackers, because who doesn't love untraceable money?
