Michael Nelson<br />P5 Honors Language<br />11/21/10<br />TT Where I’m From Poem<br />The Land Between Two Rivers<br />I’m from the land of conquest,<br />From where wandering invaders roam the land,<br />From where cooperation built a civilization.<br />I’m from where resourcefulness left your mark on the world,<br />Where pictographic writing was used for communication,<br />From where the wheel helped in transportation.<br />I’m from where building was a second nature to us,<br />From the stability of the arch,<br />And the magnificence of the dome.<br />I come from a place where we revolved around religion,<br />We built for the gods,<br />Where temples were known as ziggurats,<br />Where the ziggurats were topped with a shrine fit for a god.<br />I am from were circles were divided by 60’s,<br />Where each circle had 360 degrees,<br />Each circle divided into 60 minutes,<br />Each minute into 60 seconds,<br />From where our 60 degree system was a model to all modern nations.<br />I’m from a strong government,<br />Where there were city-states,<br />And where each city-state was made up of a city and the land surrounding.<br />From where there was rarely a time when we would unite under a single government.<br />From where gods owned city-states,<br />And priests held power.<br />I come from an area where even though education was important only upper class boys could learn,<br />From where the afterlife was not imagined in detail but rather was a shadowy lower world.<br />I am from the civilization that lived between the Tigris and Euphrates,<br />The civilization that lived in the Fertile Crescent,<br />And the civilization that lived in Sumer.<br />I am from the Sumerians.<br />
