The Six W’s of Chanukah
 Everyone! Men, women, and children
light the menorah. Sometimes only one
menorah per household is lit.
Who lights?
What is lit?
 A menorah/chanukiah with 9 branches,
one of which is taller than the others. It is
called a shamash.
 The shamash can be all the way
on one side of the menorah or
in the middle of the menorah.
 Olive oil, other oils, or candles.
What is lit?
 Is it Kosher? Check your answers.
When do we light?
 On the eight days of chanukah.
 The candles are lit after dark.
 The candles should burn for at least 30
minutes.
 On Friday, we light the Chanukah candles
before Shabbat before the Shabbat
candles, and they must stay lit for at least
30 minutes after dark (bigger candles)
Where & why do we light?
 Candles are lit on Chanukah to publicize
the miracle of Chanukah. Therefore,
candles are lit in a place where they are
visible to others: window sills, doorways,
outside, etc.
What do we do? How?
 From left to right, every night starting
with the newest candle.
 Use only shamash to light other candles.
