Systems OC 5-6
Measurement is a mathematical tool that people use every day. Measurements are used
when determining the length, weight, or capacity of an object.
There are several different systems of measurement. The two most common systems are
the customary system and the metric system.
The last lesson we converted measurements and stayed within the same system. Today
we are going to make conversions from one system to another.
The table below shows equivalencies between the customary and metric systems. You
can use these equivalencies to convert a measurement in one system to a measurement in
the other system.
We use the symbol ≈ because most conversions are approximate.
gallon ≈ 3.79 liters
Today we will focus on using proportions to complete the conversions.Round to the nearest
hundredth. (Leave two digits after the decimal.)
1 ) 5.5quarts ≈ _________ liters 3 ) 17.5yards ≈ _________ meters
2 ) 12inches ≈ _________ centimeters 4 ) _________ ounces ≈ 10grams
