course with substantial focus on practical experience components explores the design processes in two &
three dimensions, visual identity and communication, thematic structure and hierarchy, creative problem
solving, and basic design practice of critiques and discussion.
Course Duration
Associate Bachelor Degree Course of Visual Communications is offered on a two year, full time or
equivalent part time basis.
Course Structure
All subjects are provided by the Faculty of Design. Not all subjects are offered each year and availability
depends upon viable subject enrolments. An Associate Bachelor Degree of Visual Communications is
awarded as a Pass degree at the completion of two years full-time study.
The first year of the Visual Communications course focuses on the more traditional and practical areas of
Graphic Prepress and Arts such as typography, photography, principles of fundamental design, color,
advertising, illustration, drawing, multimedia production, press and printing and studio skills. The second
year builds higher conceptual, visual and technical levels on the skills that gained during the first year
through work experience and industry excursion.
As a general education, students are required to complete ‘Occupation Life (Professional Practice)’ class
per semester, 3 ‘chapels’ in the first-three semesters, Practical English program per semester and 30 hours
voluntary service before graduation.

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION
Theory of Advertising
Conceptual skills in both verbal and visual advertising are taught to develop an understanding of the
importance of fusing visual images with verbal expression when communicating ideas in advertising and
visual graphics. Students will describe and contrast historic and current periods and styles of advertising
design; distinguish and discuss local, regional, national and global design styles and trends.
Structure: 3 credit points / 2 hour lecture & 2 hours studio based class(inc. computer lab.)
Assessment: Attendance(20%) / Assigned Project(s)(40%) / Examination(40%)
Three Dimensional Form
Words and ideas in motion play a vital role in the introduction (titles and leaders) and crediting (trailers)
of almost all film and video presentations. Duration-based media (audio/video) is essential for designers
and communicators. This course is designed to help students gain a fluency in the vocabulary and
implementation of sound and moving graphic images, combining audio work with their multimedia work.
Theory and technical skill are taught side-by-side in a studio atmosphere. Students are encouraged to tell
a story beyond the traditional print and static screen, as they develop specific project goals in the initial
stages of the class.
Structure: 3 credit points / 1 hour lecture & 3 hours studio based class(inc. computer lab.)
Assessment: Attendance(20%) / Assigned Project(s)(70%) / Verbal & Visual Presentation(10%)
Computer Graphics II
This class will concentrate on utilizing design principles and theories in problem solving, focusing on the
importance of layout composition. Emphasis will be on the process of design development from roughs to
comprehensives, layout, and the use of grid systems for multi-component layouts. Moreover, students
must understand and could utilize computer graphics applications like Adobe Photoshop.
Structure: 3 credit points / 1 hour lecture & 3 hours studio based class(inc. computer lab.)
Assessment: Attendance(20%) / Assigned Project(s)(70%) / Verbal & Visual Presentation(10%)
Typography
Type and letter forms are graphic designs that inherently project a common aspect to all areas of
communication design an aesthetic message with their shapes. The prepress person/designer must know
how to marry type to image just as the graphic designer must marry image to type. Typography and
illustration/design are not ends in themselves, but a means of communication that can impart meaning.
This course encourages innovative solutions using typography design as the foundation. Students explore
new directions, developing typographical solutions for print, cinema and TV titling, architecture and
3
corporate design assignments.
Structure: 3 credit points / 1 hour lecture & 3 hours studio based class(inc. computer lab.)
Assessment: Attendance(20%) / Assigned Project(s)(70%) / Verbal & Visual Presentation(10%)
Fundamentals of Design
Visual communication design introduces students to the varieties of methods and materials used
throughout the communication design field. Students learn basic design processes-from conceptualizing
to execution-as well as the importance of “design thinking” to creative and effective visual

  • 3. SUBJECT DESCRIPTION Theory of Advertising Conceptual skills in both verbal and visual advertising are taught to develop an understanding of the importance of fusing visual images with verbal expression when communicating ideas in advertising and visual graphics. Students will describe and contrast historic and current periods and styles of advertising design; distinguish and discuss local, regional, national and global design styles and trends. Structure: 3 credit points / 2 hour lecture & 2 hours studio based class(inc. computer lab.) Assessment: Attendance(20%) / Assigned Project(s)(40%) / Examination(40%) Three Dimensional Form Words and ideas in motion play a vital role in the introduction (titles and leaders) and crediting (trailers) of almost all film and video presentations. Duration-based media (audio/video) is essential for designers and communicators. This course is designed to help students gain a fluency in the vocabulary and implementation of sound and moving graphic images, combining audio work with their multimedia work. Theory and technical skill are taught side-by-side in a studio atmosphere. Students are encouraged to tell a story beyond the traditional print and static screen, as they develop specific project goals in the initial stages of the class. Structure: 3 credit points / 1 hour lecture & 3 hours studio based class(inc. computer lab.) Assessment: Attendance(20%) / Assigned Project(s)(70%) / Verbal & Visual Presentation(10%) Computer Graphics II This class will concentrate on utilizing design principles and theories in problem solving, focusing on the importance of layout composition. Emphasis will be on the process of design development from roughs to comprehensives, layout, and the use of grid systems for multi-component layouts. Moreover, students must understand and could utilize computer graphics applications like Adobe Photoshop. Structure: 3 credit points / 1 hour lecture & 3 hours studio based class(inc. computer lab.) Assessment: Attendance(20%) / Assigned Project(s)(70%) / Verbal & Visual Presentation(10%) Typography Type and letter forms are graphic designs that inherently project a common aspect to all areas of communication design an aesthetic message with their shapes. The prepress person/designer must know how to marry type to image just as the graphic designer must marry image to type. Typography and illustration/design are not ends in themselves, but a means of communication that can impart meaning. This course encourages innovative solutions using typography design as the foundation. Students explore new directions, developing typographical solutions for print, cinema and TV titling, architecture and 3
