Poseidon was the Greek god of water and earthquakes. He created horses and wielded a powerful trident that allowed him to control the sea, create storms and earthquakes, and form new islands. Poseidon had a rivalry with Athena over which god would be honored by having the city of Athens named after them, with the citizens ultimately choosing to honor Athena.
