2. PURPOSE
Can Facebook cause
depression in anyone,
including healthy well-
adjusted people?
3. Depression is an illness that involves the body, mood, and thoughts and that
affects the way a person eats, sleeps, feels about himself or herself, and thinks
about things.
How can Facebook potentially cause depression?
Heavy Facebook users tend to see their own lives as less interesting and happy
than those of their peers. This is especially true when viewing the profiles of
people users do not know personally.
I am nothing
Others are happier and have a better life than I do.
4. Past Research
• Previous studies generally agree that there is a link between Facebook and depression. A
key question is if it can be a cause of depression itself.
• Many studies have been conducted and articles written on the subject stating that yes, it
can create a health risk, but nothing provides any solid evidence.
• Earlier this year there was a study done by the University of Wisconsin to dispute all other
claims that Facebook somehow causes depression. They concluded that there is no link
whatsoever and that we shouldn’t worry.
5. How research was conducted
• I did a survey and posted it to Facebook and “help” sites.
• Only 20 people took the survey.
• Most in their late teens/early 20’s from around the country.
7. Do you think Facebook can make a person
depressed or feel anxiety?
8. Do you find that your mood changes based on
something you see on Facebook?
9. Do you get upset when your friend requests
are rejected?
10. CONCLUSION
• Facebook isn’t the culprit, however It can be a trigger for some.
• Facebook can enhance feelings of social connectedness among well-adjusted kids, and
have the opposite effect on those prone to depression.
• It can potentially add fuel to the fire for someone already depressed.
11. Some possible solutions:
Just remember, not everything you see is the truth
and a lot of what you see is flaunting. You may be
guilty of it too.
12. Solutions:
• Remember that the whole world isn’t on Facebook.
• Get banned for your own good!
