2. Introduction
► My human activity that I chose to do is coal mining. The two effects that I have
chosen to go along with it are heat stroke and air quality.
► Coal mining- Coal mining is the removal of coal from both the earths surface and
the and the subterrain.
► What is the process of coal mining? Clearing of vegetation and top layer of soil,
3. Benefits of coal mining
► Some of the benefits of coal mining are the fact that coal is actually the cheapest
out of all the fossil fuels to mine as well if it is a open cast coal mine that means
that the miners will rarely have to go far underground and it is just majority heavy
machinery doing most of the hard work which then brings the health risk
percentage down by having less people closer to the poor air quality that cool
mining brings along wit it. Coal is the number one energy source of the world and
actually accounts for 30% of the entire world's energy supply and generates 40%
of the energy we use around the world. Unlike other energy sources like solar
power, wind turbines and hydropower production of coal energy isn't controlled
by the state of the weather witch gives people the ability to have it in production
all year round.
4. Anthropogenic Greenhouse Effect on Coal
Mining
► Burning coal is one of the most cost efficient yet damaging ways to produce energy.
Coal is the world’s largest contributor to Anthropogenic climate change. Burning coal
creates Carbon Dioxide that gets released into the earth’s atmosphere. causing 45%
carbon dioxide emissions around the global. Coal was the fastest increasing energy
source within the last decade. Coal is responsible for 72% for Greenhouse gas
emissions just for electricity.
► Another gas that is emitted from burning coal is called Nitrogen Oxides or (NOx). This
gas is a pretty big contributing factor to smog. Nitrogen oxide can also cause major
respiratory issues, illnesses and diseases.
► Coal mining is accountable for releasing 11% of GHG into the atmosphere.
5. Effects of Climate Change
► The largest contributor to climate change. When the carbon dioxide gets released it
almost acts like a sheet in the atmosphere. Trapping and overwarming everything
underneath to abnormal climate levels. When this action takes place its raises the
temperature 0.3°C – 0.8°C. I know how that sounds. Not that much right? wrong.
Because that adds up over the time. In fact it has. Over the last 20 years the
temperature has risen a whole 1°C.
► Our summers are getting hotter and our Winters are getting shorter and warmer, and
the air quality is getting denser. Due to this increase in temperature there also
becomes another huge danger for humanity. Due to this increase of extreme and
intense weather we aren’t use to we stand at the risk of heat stroke.
► Heat stroke is when your body temperature
reaches an uncontrollable level to the point the
body is unable to cool itself down. This causes
many of your bodily systems to shutdown and fail.
Heat stroke can last 1-2 days of there’s organ
damage or failure, and can even cause fatality.
► The graph to the right shows the increase in death
from 1975-2020 due to heat stroke.
6. Human Effects of Climate Change
The domino affect of Coal mining, heat stroke and air quality.
► The domino affect of Coal mining, can have a major effects on heat stroke
and air quality.
► Coal mining releases these very harmful gases into the earths atmosphere.
With these gases being released into the earths atmosphere it can play a
heavy impact on the air quality but also climate change. The air quality
becomes denser and weather temperature becomes hotter which can lead
to heat stroke.
7. Solution
► A solution that can prevent all these issues is switching everything over to
clean source of energy. Either solar panels or wind turbines generators to
prevent the burning of harsh and damaging fossil fuels. By doing so over the
years we will lessen the amount of Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere but also
decrease our carbon footprint, instead of adding to it. The air will become
cleaner, will be less dense to breathe. We can use the amazing tools we have
today to help with this process as well.
