Course Description
Principles of route location. Horizontal alignment, design and setting out (circular curve
element, setting out of circular and transition curves, super-elevation). Vertical alignment;
design and setting out (properties of vertical curves). Coordination of horizontal and vertical
curves. Capacity of two-lane highways. Geometric design of intersection.
Course Objective
102322 Highway Geometric Design is a third-year 3-credit Civil Engineering course aimed at
the Civil Engineering students of AUM. Our goal is to convey specific elementary knowledge
about Highway Geometric Design. The Course is intended to teach basic Highway Geometric
Design in theoretical manner, and concepts learned in this course will be put into practice during
the relevant laboratory sessions.
Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
 Understand the functions of a highway;
 Understand the geometric design controls and criteria;
 Understand the elements of horizontal alignment, including being able to design and set
out circular curve elements and circular and transition curves;
 Understand the elements of vertical alignment, including being able to design and set out
vertical curves;
 Being able to coordinate of horizontal and vertical curves;
 Understand the elements of cross-section elements;
 Differentiate between the geometrical designs of local roads and streets, collector roads
and streets, rural and urban arterials, and freeways;
 Being able to design the geometry of intersections; and
 Understand grade separations and interchanges.
Tentative Course Outline
 Introduction;
 Highway Functions;
 Design Controls and Criteria;
 Elements of Design;
 Cross-Section Elements;
 Local Roads and Streets; Collector Roads and Streets; Rural and Urban Arterials;
Freeways;
 Intersections; and
 Grade Separations and Interchanges.

Instruction Methods
The methods of instruction may include, but are not limited to:
 Lectures using laptop & projector;
 Lectures using board & markers;
 Discussion and problem solving;
 STREET software for Project development; and
 Pop-Quizzes.
Project
Students will make use of STREET (Simulating Transportation for Realistic Engineering
Education and Training), which is a project funded by NSF (National Science Foundation) in
the USA, with match support from ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) Institute of UMN
(University of Minnesota). From this link (http://street.umn.edu) the project is accessible, where
the module of ROAD (Roadway Online Application for Design) will be used to develop the
project. Students shall work on this as 1-, 2- or 3-person teams. Students should familiarize
themselves with the software and develop a full geometric design for a road with horizontal and
vertical curves. The two assignments in the module’s webpage give an idea about the
expectations from the students. Reports are due May 3rd
, 2016, and each team will present their
project to class during the period 03-24 May 2016. Identical projects will be rejected.

Course Policies
University regulations apply to this course regarding class attendance, punctuality, exams, late
submissions, absence with permission, penalties for cheating, and policies for assignments and projects,
if any. Students should be aware of all those in addition to other rules and regulations stated and
described in the student handbook.
If the door of the lecture room is not closed, you can come in calmly and quietly. Once the door of the
lecture room has been closed, no student will be allowed in; do not disturb by knocking on the door.
Attendance is deemed valid at the moment it is taken; if you are not present at that moment, you are
considered absent and you must not talk with the professor about the issue. Hence, make sure to come to
the lecture room 5 minutes in advance, always, and to be present all through the lecture.
Mobile phones must be switched off during the 75-minute period of lecture. Any mobile phone that rings
or is noticed to be switched on is a sufficient reason to expel its owner from the lecture room.
