Calculations; Introduction to GPS / Photogrammetry / GIS; Introduction to LiDAR / 3D Laser Scanning.
Course Objective
102251 Surveying is a second-year 3-credit Civil Engineering course aimed at the Civil Engineering
students of AUM. Our goal is to convey specific elementary knowledge about Surveying Engineering.
The Course is intended to teach basic Surveying Engineering in theoretical manner, and concepts learned
in this course will be put into practice during the Surveying Laboratory.
Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Have a general idea about the history of the profession of Surveying;
2. Understand various types of units, conduct conversions between units, identify the correct
number of significant figures in any mathematical calculation, and know how to retain them;
3. Know the basics of the theory of errors and how to conduct simple adjustment and conditional
adjustment of surveying observations;
4. Know how to apply necessary corrections for distance measurement using tapes;
5. Understand the basics of leveling and different measures of leveling precision;

6. Know various types of angles, including azimuths and bearings, and how to propagate them
through complication traverses;
7. Calculate areas of different and confusing geometric shapes using different types of approaches,
and apply that knowledge to calculate volumes as well;
8. Implement the geometry of coordinates to conduct six major applications in Surveying like
intersection of a line with a circle, intersection of two circles, perpendicular distance from a
point to a line, 3-point resection, intersection of 2 lines with known directions, and inaccessible
point calculations;
9. Understand the very basics of GPS, GIS and Photogrammetry; and
10. Understand the very basics of 3D laser scanning / LiDAR.

Course Policies
University regulations apply to this course regarding class attendance, punctuality, exams, late
submissions, absence with permission, penalties for cheating, and policies for assignments and projects,
if any. Students should be aware of all those in addition to other rules and regulations stated and
described in the student handbook.
Once the door of the lecture room has been closed, no student will be allowed in; do not disturb by
knocking on the door. Arriving at the lecture room after the attendance has been taken is equivalent to
absence. Hence, make sure to come to the lecture room 5 minutes in advance, always.
Mobile phones must be switched off during the 75-minute period of lecture. Any mobile phone that rings
or is noticed to be switched on is a sufficient reason to expel its owner from the lecture room.
