2. Genre
Coraline is a 2009 American stop motion animated horror film. It was produced by Laika
and distributed by Focus Features. The film depicts an adventurous girl finding an idealized
parallel world behind a secret door in her new home, unaware that the alternate world
contains a dark and sinister secret.
The mysterious and creepy
atmosphere in this film is quickly
enforced when we hear the music. The
non-diagetic sound is of a choir of
young children creates a spine-chilling
feeling.
3. Titles and Production Company
This is the opening slide to the title scene in
Coraline where we can see the name
’Coraline’ stichted into the marron
background. This creates the mis-en-scene
to be quite historic.
The production company of this film is Laika and the director is Henry Selick. These are
introduced on to the screen in a white , slightly faded text.
4. MISE-EN-SCENE
Here we can see the girl placed on to
strange looking medical table, which
includes scissors, hooks and other
medical equiptment. This creates the
mise-en-scene to be haunting and
disturbing.
We continue to see signs of an old
and decaying atmosphere. For
example we could see spider
webs on the sewing machine on
the left. The lighting is dull and
grey, re-enforcing the dark
atmosphere here.
5. Editing
The non-diegetic music throughout this opening title scene is a haunting choir of
young children. The diegetic sound here is of the stitching and filling of the doll.
I liked how the camera followed the metal hand here and watched as the doll was
assembled.
In the editing of this, they may of put in a green or dull looking filter to help create
the haunting theme.
