3. About Tawur Agung
Tawur Agung is just one of ceremonies to
welcome New Year especially for Hindu
Believers. Tawur Agung is held to keep
harmonization between human being,
environtment, and their God.
4. The Participants
In the ceremony, the believers are facing Pura
(place for Hindu believers to pray) because
they must obey the rules in their belief.
There are two main spaces for doing the ritual :
1. The front side (the one that close to Pura)
2. The back side
6. 2. The back side is used for entirely the believers that
came from many places in Indonesia.
7. The believers were free to choose where they want to sit. But
the committee didn’t provide any chairs or sitting layers for
them. So, they had to bring it by themselves. Most of believers
came to join the ritual by group.
8. Most of the guests were sitting on the ground.
But for Pedanda, they sat on the stage.
9. Different with the believers there was a marquee special for the
VIP guests, such as Ministry of Religion, Governor of Central
Java, Head Police Officer from Central Java Division, etc.
10. When the praying would be started, the area
of the ceremony was secured by security
sections (Pecalang). Because the Hindu
believers had to concentrate during the
ritual. The visitors were forbidden to enter
the area.
11. All of the believers would be sit on the ground.
It also applied to the VIP guests.
But for the security sections (Pecalang), they
didn’t take a part when all hindu believers
prayed to Sang Hyang Widhi because they had
to be responsible of the conditions.

13. In the picture he is a MC that give instructions
out of the ritual.
While the believers
were praying, the
participants were
given instructions
from the MC. The
MC is a wasi.
14. People who were in Cuntaka, they were forbidden to take
part in the ritual when Hindu Believers held praying which
is known as pancasembah. In this case, cuntaka is women
who in period, people who had warred, and people whose
their relatives recently pass away.
This is because they can’t concentrate while they pray to the
God. But they are still allowed if they want to take part for
the ceremonial procession.
