Sickle cell anemia is a serious blood disorder where red blood cells become sickle-shaped, like a C, instead of round. It affects over 70,000 Americans, particularly 2 million African Americans who have the sickle cell trait. The disease causes hemoglobin problems and teens with sickle cell may develop jaundice, causing their skin and eyes to turn yellow.
