2. GENETICS OR HEREDITY??
Northwestern Medicine did two large studies
on health lifestyles having big impacts on
ones cardiovascular health. The main point
of the study was those in the study that
adopted the healthy lifestyle in their young
adult life maintained a low risk profile in
their middle age life. The main factors of
living a healthy lifestyle were not smoking,
low to no alcohol, watching their weight,
being physically acitve and eating healthy.
From this study Northwestern surmised that
it showed cardiovascular health is due
mainly to lifestyle factors and healthy
behavior, not heredity.
3. RISK FACTORS: AGE, TOBACCO, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, HIGH BLOOD CHOLESTEROL OR
TRIGLYCERIDES, DIABETES, FAMILY HISTORY OF HEART ATTACKS, LACK OF PHYSICAL
ACTIVITIES, OBESITY, STRESS, ILLEGAL DRUG USE, A HISTORY OF PREECLAMPSIA
4. A condition in which patchy deposits of fatty material
(atheromas or atherosclerotic plaques) develop in the
walls of medium-sized and large arteries, leading to
reduced or blocked blood flow.
ATHEROSCLEROSIS
5. TREATMENT PLANS
The most important treatment is early treatment to limit
damage to the heart muscle. Acting fast can save your
life. If a heart attack is suspected even before a
diagnosis is confimed these will include: Oxygen
therapy, aspirin, nitrglycern and treatment for the chest
pain. Once the diagnosis is confirmed or strongly
suspected, the doctors will then begin start treatment
promptly to immediately restore blood flow to your
heart. Here are two of the main treatments used for
heart attacks, “clot-busting,” and Coronary angioplasty,
a procedure used to open blocked arteries.
6. In learning more about this disease I now am aware of my families history when it deals with our health
and our heart. I know now that I do not have to be afraid because of the past or future. I hold the key to
how well my life will continue by living, eating, exercising and doing the right things in my lifestyle when I
grow up to be the right decisions for me. I can not worry about others so much because I am only
responsible for myself. I can give information but they must make the ultimate decision for their life. As
the sign above says lets try and prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes over five years. I am willing to
help are you?
