Activity One: Christ’s Life Prior to His Ministry - I
Luke’s Preface and Dedication and John’s Introduction
(Luke1:1-4; John 1:1-18)
1. Where was Jesus “in the beginning?”
Answer; In the gospels, the ministry of Jesus begins with his baptism in the
countryside of Roman Judea and Transjordan, near the river Jordan, and ends in
Jerusalem, following the Last Supper with his disciples.
2. What part did Jesus have in the creation?
Answer; Part of that is just the highly agrarian culture that existed then. the same
questions might be asked of God's creation of the sun and other stars. In Genesis 1:16, we
read: “God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser
light to govern the night; He made the stars also.
3. For what purpose was John the Baptist sent from God?
Answer;
 He was sent from God (v6)
 He came as a witness to the light (v7)
In SUM:
1. Jesus is Co-Creator of all visible and invisible.
2. Jesus sustains the creation, today.
3. Jesus is the 1st born of the new creation
4. Of whom is it said, “He was in the world, … and the world did not know Him?”
Why was this said about him?
Answer; t was said of Christ---because the world (the religious leaders, the
Jews, even his own disciples) did not recognize who He was.
5. What did Jesus give to those who “received Him?” What does that mean?
Answer; He gave them power "to become the sons of God." or more correctly
"children of God," which is a mammoth concept to unpack. John elaborates that
these are "born of God," in contrast to being born of "blood, or the will of the
flesh or the will of man.
6. What comparisons did John the Baptist make between himself and Jesus?
Answer; John says that Christ "ranks before me" because he precedes him (v 15).

7. In contrast to the law given through Moses, what is said to have come
through Jesus Christ? Give a brief summary of how this is true.
Answer; It is grace in contrast with law as Paul sets forth in Galatians and
Romans. Paul had made grace “a Christian commonplace” (Bernard) before
John wrote. It is truth as opposed to Gnostic and all other heresy as Paul shows
in Colossians and Ephesians. The two words aptly describe two aspects of the
Logos and John drops the use of Logos and charis, but clings to alētheia (see
Joh_8:32 for the freedom brought by truth), though the ideas in these three
words run all through his Gospel. -RWP
The Genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:1-17; Luke 3:23-38)
8. How many generations were there from Abraham to Christ?
Answer; Jacob begot Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is
called Christ. Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David,
fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ."
9. According to Luke, of whom is Jesus “supposed” to be the son? Why didhe
express it in that way?
Answer; They are expressed in such a manner as to suggest a variety of ways to
integrate themes. Strand SC: Sacred Scripture.
10. How do you explain the obvious differences between the genealogies ofJesus as
recorded by Matthew and Luke?
Answer; Luke's narrative includes a number of unique “songs” or “canticles,”
whereas Matthew offers a series of distinctive “fulfillment passages” that relate
Jesus to Israel's history. Matthew starts his infancy narrative with a genealogy of
Jesus from Abraham down to Joseph and Mary.
Annunciation to Zacharias of the Birth of John the Baptist (Luke 1:5-25)
11. Who were Zacharias and Elizabeth? Describe their character.
Answer; Elizabeth was "of the daughters of Aaron". She and her husband Zachariah
were "righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the
Lord blameless but chiless.

12. What was Zacharias doing at the time the angel appeared to him and revealed that Elizabeth
would bear a son?
Answer; In Nazareth, a city in the northern region of Galilee, a young girl named Mary was
betrothed to Joseph, of the house of David. Before their marriage, an angel named Gabriel was sent
to Mary and said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.”
13. What did the angel tell Zacharias in reference to the son that was to be born to him and his wife?
Answer; Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John” (Luke 1:13). ... In Luke's
Gospel, the angel tells Zechariah, “He must never drink wine or strong drink; even before his birth he will be
filled with the Holy Spirit.
14. When Zacharias asked for proof from the angel to verify his message, what sign did he give him?
Answer; And they made signs [this seems to indicate that Zachariah was deaf as well as dumb] to his
father, what he would have him called. 63 And he asked for a writing tablet [tablets were sometimes
made of lead, but were usually small wooden boards, either smeared with wax, or having sand
sprinkled over them, on which words were written with an iron stylus or pencil], and wrote, saying,
His name is John. And they marveled all.
Annunciation of the Birth of Jesus (Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 1:26-38)
15. When Joseph learned that Mary was to have a child, what was he going to do? Why? In response
to this, who appeared to Joseph? What did he reveal?
Answer; Joseph was trying to test his brothers. He was trying to dismiss them from his life whilst
retaining Benjamin in Egypt. In doing so, Joseph imperiled the Messianic promises in a similar manner
to other patriarchs including Abraham and Isaac. Our Lord had to work in Joseph to enable him to
forgive his brothers and secure the safety and continuation of the line of Israel in Goshen.
16. What prophecies were fulfilled by the birth of Jesus?
Answer; Now Elizabeth's time was fulfilled that she should be delivered; and she brought
forth a son. 58 And her neighbors and her kinfolk heard that the Lord had magnified his
mercy towards her [mercy in granting a child; great mercy in granting so illustrious a child]; and
they rejoiced with her
17. Whose throne did the angel tell Mary that her Son would occupy? Why could He do that?
Answer; The angel also says “The Lord will give him the throne of his father David”. It was expected that the
Messiah would be from King David's family line.
18. What did Mary ask the angel after being told she was to bear a son? What was his response?
Answer; When Gabriel appeared to Mary to tell her of what would soon happen, Mary's response (after she
asks one quick question) is that of submission, trust, and faith. She said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord;
let it be to me according to your word

Mary’s Visit to Elizabeth (Luke 1:39-56)
19. What was Mary’s relationship to Elizabeth? What caused Mary to visit her at this time?
Answer; Mary goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth when both of them are expecting their babies. Elizabeth's
baby “leaped in her womb” when Mary entered the house and called a greeting. This incident shows that even
though they are not yet born, John acknowledges the superiority of Jesus and recognizes that Jesus is God's
son.
20. What happened when Mary greeted Elizabeth? Why?
Answer; When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with
the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your
womb.
The Birth and Early Life of John the Baptist (Luke 1:57-80)
21. Briefly summarize the events surrounding the birth of John the Baptist.
Answer; John the Baptist, (born 1st decade bce, Judaea, Palestine, near Jerusalem—died 28–36 ce; feast day
June 24), Jewish prophet of priestly origin who preached the imminence of God's Final Judgment and baptized
those who repented in self-preparation for it; he is revered in the Christian church as the forerunner of Jesus
22. What did Zacharias say that John would do?
Answer; A priest could do this only once in his entire life. Others in the multitude were
expecting to hear him pronounce the great Levitical blessing.
23. What is said of John as a child?
Answer; Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for
of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a
little child shall in no wise enter therein.
24. What is meant by the phrase “till the day of his manifestation to Israel?”
Answer; And the child continued to grow and was strengthened in spirit; and he was in the deserted
places until the day of his appearance to Israel.

Activity Two: Christ’s Life Prior to His Ministry - II
The Birth of Jesus (Luke 2:1-20)
1. Who sent out a decree requiring all people to go to their own city to be enrolled?
What was the purpose of this enrollment? What is meant by thephrase “his
own city?”
Answer; Now it came to pass in those days [the days of the birth of John
the Baptist], there went out a decree [a law] from Caesar Augustus
[Octavio’s, or Augustus, Caesar was the nephew of and successor to Julius
Caesar. He took the name Augustus in compliment to his own greatness;
and our month August is named for him; its old name being Sextilis], that
all the world should be enrolled.
2. Where was Joseph required to go as a result of this decree? Who
accompanied him? Why?
Answer; Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of
Nazareth [see on Lk 1:26], unto Judea, to the city of David [after
the lapse of ten centuries the name of David still cast its fragrance
over the place of his birth--1Sa 17:12], which is called Bethlehem
[Meaning "house of bread."
3. In what city was Jesus born? Why was He born in a stable? What Old
Testament prophecies were fulfilled by His birth?
Answer; Bethlehem lies 10 kilometers south of the city of Jerusalem, in the
fertile limestone hill country of the Holy Land. Since at least the 2nd century
AD people have believed that the place where the Church of the Nativity,
Bethlehem, now stands is where Jesus was born.
4. Who appeared to shepherds who were in the fields near Bethlehem? Whatwas
his message to them? How were they to know the Christ when they saw Him?
Answer; There were shepherds taking care of their flocks at night. An angel
appeared to them and told them not to be afraid as he brought good news, “This
very day in David's town your saviour was born – Christ the Lord!” They would
find the baby wrapped in cloth, lying in a manger
5. What did the shepherds do after they had seen the baby Jesus?

Answer; When they saw it, they made known the saying which was spoken to
them about this child. All who heard it wondered at the things which were
spoken to them by the shepherds. ... The shepherds returned, glorifying and
praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told
them.
The Circumcision of Jesus and His Presentation in the Temple (Luke 2:21-39)
6. What was done to Jesus on the eighth day following His birth? Why?
Answer; The circumcision of Jesus is an event from the life of Jesus, according to
the Gospel of Luke chapter 2, which states: And when eight days were fulfilled
to circumcise the child, his name was called Jesus, the name called by the angel
before he was conceived in the womb.
7. When was Jesus taken to the temple in Jerusalem? What was the purposed
of this visit?
Answer; According to the gospel, Mary and Joseph took the Infant Jesus to the Temple
in Jerusalem forty days (inclusive) after His birth to complete Mary's ritual purification
after childbirth, and to perform the redemption of the firstborn son, in obedience to the
Torah.
8. Who was Simeon? What had the Holy Spirit revealed to him? What did hedo
and say in relation to Jesus, Mary, and Joseph?
Answer; Simon the Leper (Greek: Σίμων ὁ λεπρός, Símōn ho leprós) is
a biblical figure who lived in Bethany, a village in Judaea on the
southeastern slope of the Mount of Olives. He is mentioned in the Gospels
according to Matthew and Mark.
9. Who was Anna? What did son to Jesus?
Answer; Anna (Hebrew: ‫ַח‬‫נ‬ָּ‫ה‬, Ancient Greek: Ἄννα) or Anna the Prophetess is a woman
mentioned in the Gospel of Luke. According to that Gospel, she was an elderly woman of
the Tribe of Asher who prophesied about Jesus at the Temple of Jerusalem. She appears
in Luke 2:36–38 during the presentation of Jesus at the Temple.

The Visit of the Wise Men from the East (Matthew 2:1-12)
10. Why did the wise men come to Jerusalem?
Answer; Secretly intending to find and kill the Messiah in order to preserve his own
kingship, Herod invites the wise men to return to him on their way home. The star
leads them to Jesus' Bethlehem birthplace, where they worship him and give him
gifts.
11. Who was Herod? Why was he troubled over the visit of the wise men? What
request did he make of them?
Answer; Herod had planned to make the Magi tell him of the whereabouts of the Christ
child. When he heard of the Magi's change in course, he grew angry and tried to kill the
infant messiah by killing all the young children in the area, an event known as the
Massacre of the Innocents.
12. How did the wise men finally find Jesus? What gifts did they bring Him?
Why did they notcomply with Herod’s request? What did they do instead?
Answer; As the well-known story in the Gospel of Matthew goes, three Magi, or
wise men, followed the Star of Bethlehem to Jerusalem some 2,000 years ago. And
after consulting with King Herod of Judea, the men found newborn baby Jesus in
the little town of Bethlehem.
The Flight into Egypt and the Subsequent Return to Nazareth (Matthew 2:13-23; Luke 2:39)
13. What advice did the angel of the Lord give Joseph when he appeared to
him soon after thedeparture of the wise men? What did Joseph do?
Answer; And look, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the
Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. The angel said to them, “Do
not be afraid, for see, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the
people. Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem when He was 8
days old. At that time, they gave Him the name Jesus, as the angel had
instructed.
14. What prophecy was fulfilled when Joseph took the child Jesus into Egypt?
Answer; Herod died soon after the flight to Egypt, the sojourn of the family of Jesus in
that land must have been brief, for they returned after his death]: that it might be
fulfilled that was spoken by the Lord [the message is the Lord's, the words and voice
are the prophet's] through the prophet [see Ho 11:1], saying, Out of Egypt did I call
my son. [Most take this passage from Hosea to refer to the nation Israel’s Exodus
from Egypt.

Answer; Joseph's dreams first get him into trouble, but his ability to understand them leads
him to be chosen by the Pharaoh and to save the world. We could learn a lesson about the
mysteries of how the world works. Believers and non-believers can see it as an illustration of
the need to keep trying and persevere.
16. To what city did Joseph return with Mary and the child? Why? What prophecy
was fulfilled bythis action?
Answer; The gospel of Luke, by contrast, says Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth all
along, went down to Bethlehem only because the Roman Emperor decreed that
everyone return to their ancestral birthplaces to enroll in a census, and returned home
after Jesus's birth.
Jesus’ Visit to Jerusalem at Age Twelve (Luke 2:40-52)
17. Why did Jesus accompany His parents to Jerusalem?
Answer; The values Jesus Christ taught in the New Testament can be summed up in two
thoughts—love God and love others. Here is a sampling of values that are presented in the
Word of God: Generosity – This is the core Christian value of being kind and unselfish,
especially with our money and time.
18. After setting out for home on their return journey, what did Mary and Joseph
discover? How longdid it take them to find Jesus? Where was He when they found
Him? What was He doing?
Answer; home and after a day of travel realized Jesus was missing, so they returned to
Jerusalem, finding Jesus three days later Mary and Joseph headed back.
19. What did Mary ask Jesus upon finding Him? What was His reply?
Answer; Mary and Joseph headed back home and after a day of travel realized Jesus was
missing, so they returned to Jerusalem, finding Jesus three days later. He was found in The
Temple in discussion with the elders. ... When admonished by Mary, Jesus replied: "How is it
that you sought me?
20. Describe the development of Jesus in the following areas and what is involved in each
area.

challenges what has become accepted wisdom among many
historians— Robert Darn ton. accumulated philosophical or scientific
learning : knowledge.
2. Stature.- Stature can refer to a person's height or the high level of
respect with which she is regarded. Your grandmother might be
small in stature, or height, but have great stature, or esteem, in her
community.

to make a worthwhile difference. Favour is the highway to connect
your destiny. In Genesis 6:8, the Bible says: “But Noah found Grace
in the eyes of the Lord.” When you are connected to favour, you are
connected to good and grace.
In favor with men.- Being in favor with men means that people
like you and want to do good things for you; they may not even
know you but there's just 'something' about you that makes them
want to go out of their own to help.

  • 1. A Chronological Study of the Life of Jesus by Gene Taylor Fourfold Gospel or Harmony of the Gospel by J.W. McGarvey and P.Y. Pendleton The Bible- Old and New Testament CHRISTIAN MORAL VALUES I LIFE OF JESUS References: Name: Jerimie de Roxas Date: 09/27/2021 Section: Section C Ms. Eugenia Abe Evora Activity One: Christ’s Life Prior to His Ministry - I Luke’s Preface and Dedication and John’s Introduction (Luke1:1-4; John 1:1-18) 1. Where was Jesus “in the beginning?” Answer; In the gospels, the ministry of Jesus begins with his baptism in the countryside of Roman Judea and Transjordan, near the river Jordan, and ends in Jerusalem, following the Last Supper with his disciples. 2. What part did Jesus have in the creation? Answer; Part of that is just the highly agrarian culture that existed then. the same questions might be asked of God's creation of the sun and other stars. In Genesis 1:16, we read: “God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also. 3. For what purpose was John the Baptist sent from God? Answer;  He was sent from God (v6)  He came as a witness to the light (v7) In SUM: 1. Jesus is Co-Creator of all visible and invisible. 2. Jesus sustains the creation, today. 3. Jesus is the 1st born of the new creation 4. Of whom is it said, “He was in the world, … and the world did not know Him?” Why was this said about him? Answer; t was said of Christ---because the world (the religious leaders, the Jews, even his own disciples) did not recognize who He was. 5. What did Jesus give to those who “received Him?” What does that mean? Answer; He gave them power "to become the sons of God." or more correctly "children of God," which is a mammoth concept to unpack. John elaborates that these are "born of God," in contrast to being born of "blood, or the will of the flesh or the will of man. 6. What comparisons did John the Baptist make between himself and Jesus? Answer; John says that Christ "ranks before me" because he precedes him (v 15). Lesson  Texts Fourfold Gospel pp. 1-26 Matthew 1:1-25 Mark Luke 1:1-80 3:23-38 John 1:1-18
  • 2. A Chronological Study of the Life of Jesus by Gene Taylor Fourfold Gospel or Harmony of the Gospel by J.W. McGarvey and P.Y. Pendleton The Bible- Old and New Testament CHRISTIAN MORAL VALUES I LIFE OF JESUS References: 7. In contrast to the law given through Moses, what is said to have come through Jesus Christ? Give a brief summary of how this is true. Answer; It is grace in contrast with law as Paul sets forth in Galatians and Romans. Paul had made grace “a Christian commonplace” (Bernard) before John wrote. It is truth as opposed to Gnostic and all other heresy as Paul shows in Colossians and Ephesians. The two words aptly describe two aspects of the Logos and John drops the use of Logos and charis, but clings to alētheia (see Joh_8:32 for the freedom brought by truth), though the ideas in these three words run all through his Gospel. -RWP The Genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:1-17; Luke 3:23-38) 8. How many generations were there from Abraham to Christ? Answer; Jacob begot Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ." 9. According to Luke, of whom is Jesus “supposed” to be the son? Why didhe express it in that way? Answer; They are expressed in such a manner as to suggest a variety of ways to integrate themes. Strand SC: Sacred Scripture. 10. How do you explain the obvious differences between the genealogies ofJesus as recorded by Matthew and Luke? Answer; Luke's narrative includes a number of unique “songs” or “canticles,” whereas Matthew offers a series of distinctive “fulfillment passages” that relate Jesus to Israel's history. Matthew starts his infancy narrative with a genealogy of Jesus from Abraham down to Joseph and Mary. Annunciation to Zacharias of the Birth of John the Baptist (Luke 1:5-25) 11. Who were Zacharias and Elizabeth? Describe their character. Answer; Elizabeth was "of the daughters of Aaron". She and her husband Zachariah were "righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless but chiless.
  • 3. A Chronological Study of the Life of Jesus by Gene Taylor Fourfold Gospel or Harmony of the Gospel by J.W. McGarvey and P.Y. Pendleton The Bible- Old and New Testament CHRISTIAN MORAL VALUES I LIFE OF JESUS References: 12. What was Zacharias doing at the time the angel appeared to him and revealed that Elizabeth would bear a son? Answer; In Nazareth, a city in the northern region of Galilee, a young girl named Mary was betrothed to Joseph, of the house of David. Before their marriage, an angel named Gabriel was sent to Mary and said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.” 13. What did the angel tell Zacharias in reference to the son that was to be born to him and his wife? Answer; Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John” (Luke 1:13). ... In Luke's Gospel, the angel tells Zechariah, “He must never drink wine or strong drink; even before his birth he will be filled with the Holy Spirit. 14. When Zacharias asked for proof from the angel to verify his message, what sign did he give him? Answer; And they made signs [this seems to indicate that Zachariah was deaf as well as dumb] to his father, what he would have him called. 63 And he asked for a writing tablet [tablets were sometimes made of lead, but were usually small wooden boards, either smeared with wax, or having sand sprinkled over them, on which words were written with an iron stylus or pencil], and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marveled all. Annunciation of the Birth of Jesus (Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 1:26-38) 15. When Joseph learned that Mary was to have a child, what was he going to do? Why? In response to this, who appeared to Joseph? What did he reveal? Answer; Joseph was trying to test his brothers. He was trying to dismiss them from his life whilst retaining Benjamin in Egypt. In doing so, Joseph imperiled the Messianic promises in a similar manner to other patriarchs including Abraham and Isaac. Our Lord had to work in Joseph to enable him to forgive his brothers and secure the safety and continuation of the line of Israel in Goshen. 16. What prophecies were fulfilled by the birth of Jesus? Answer; Now Elizabeth's time was fulfilled that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. 58 And her neighbors and her kinfolk heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her [mercy in granting a child; great mercy in granting so illustrious a child]; and they rejoiced with her 17. Whose throne did the angel tell Mary that her Son would occupy? Why could He do that? Answer; The angel also says “The Lord will give him the throne of his father David”. It was expected that the Messiah would be from King David's family line. 18. What did Mary ask the angel after being told she was to bear a son? What was his response? Answer; When Gabriel appeared to Mary to tell her of what would soon happen, Mary's response (after she asks one quick question) is that of submission, trust, and faith. She said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word
  • 4. A Chronological Study of the Life of Jesus by Gene Taylor Fourfold Gospel or Harmony of the Gospel by J.W. McGarvey and P.Y. Pendleton The Bible- Old and New Testament CHRISTIAN MORAL VALUES I LIFE OF JESUS References: Mary’s Visit to Elizabeth (Luke 1:39-56) 19. What was Mary’s relationship to Elizabeth? What caused Mary to visit her at this time? Answer; Mary goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth when both of them are expecting their babies. Elizabeth's baby “leaped in her womb” when Mary entered the house and called a greeting. This incident shows that even though they are not yet born, John acknowledges the superiority of Jesus and recognizes that Jesus is God's son. 20. What happened when Mary greeted Elizabeth? Why? Answer; When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. The Birth and Early Life of John the Baptist (Luke 1:57-80) 21. Briefly summarize the events surrounding the birth of John the Baptist. Answer; John the Baptist, (born 1st decade bce, Judaea, Palestine, near Jerusalem—died 28–36 ce; feast day June 24), Jewish prophet of priestly origin who preached the imminence of God's Final Judgment and baptized those who repented in self-preparation for it; he is revered in the Christian church as the forerunner of Jesus 22. What did Zacharias say that John would do? Answer; A priest could do this only once in his entire life. Others in the multitude were expecting to hear him pronounce the great Levitical blessing. 23. What is said of John as a child? Answer; Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein. 24. What is meant by the phrase “till the day of his manifestation to Israel?” Answer; And the child continued to grow and was strengthened in spirit; and he was in the deserted places until the day of his appearance to Israel.
