The Dawk or Dak was a very old system of
runners that served the Indus Valley of
Sindh, (Now in Pakistan). The term Scinde Dawk
refers to the irst adhesive postage stamps in Asia.
The name derives from the words “Scinde”, the
British spelling of the name of the province of
“Sindh”, and “Dawk”, the anglicised spelling of
the Hindustani word “Dak” or Post.
In 1852, India became the 10th country in
the world and irst in asia to issue postage
stamps in a remote province called scinde.
Sir. Bartle Frere designed the stamps .
The Scinde Dawk Stamps were issued for the irst
time on 01-07-1852 and subsequently stopped
on 30-09-1854 and the balance was ordained to
be destroyed. White & Red were locally done,
whereas blue was printed by De La Rue. Red was
the result to replace white as it was not visible in
candle light.

Scinde Dawk
B
artle Frere of the East India Company became the Chief
Commissioner of Sindh in 1850. Following the English
example set by Rowland Hill, Frere improved upon the
postal system of Sindh by introducing a cheap and uniform rate
for postage, independent of distance travelled. In 1851 the run-
ners were replaced with an eicient system using horses and
camels, following routes through Scinde province, generally
along the valley of the Indus river. The mail was carried quickly
and eiciently, connecting government oices and post oices
from Karachi through Kotri and Hyderabad up to Sukkur.

Printing from copper plates is the technique of transferring to a sheet of paper, a piece of satin or any similar material the imprint of lines
etched with acid or engraved, with a burin or by some other means, on a plate of copper or of wood.
Stamps are printed in diferent processes. Paper stamps have been produced in a variety of techniques such as letterpress, photogravure, ofset
lithography printing, engraving & intaglio.
Stamps in the late 1840’s were processed through intaglio printing. Thus, even if a postage stamp issue is printed with the same design, the
stamp value is not the same at all. Every printing method has slight variations during the printing process.

BAZAR, Chuchura”, Good Condition, Rare.
Portuguese founded the town of Chuchura (Hooghly) in 1579, but the district has thousands
of years of heritage in the form of the great kingdom of Bhurshut. The city lourished as a
trading port and some religious structures were built. One such structure is a Christian church
dedicated to a statue of Mary, brought by the Portuguese.
In the 17th century, political disorder struck the city and the Mughal governor of Bengal
expelled the Portuguese. The leeing Portuguese lost the statue in the river, but local people
later found it on the river bank. The arrested Portuguese were taken to Delhi, where a death
sentence of trampling by elephants was decreed. When the emperor Shah Jahan heard this
he ordered the priests released and granted a piece of land on the bank of the river Hooghly,
where the statue of Mary was re-established. There the Portuguese constructed a church to
house the statue, which still receives pilgrims today.
In 1656 the Dutch erected a factory on the site of the town. At that time Calcutta was the
principal settlement in Dutch Bengal, who used it as a base for the Dutch intra-Asian opium
trade.
In 1759 the garrison of Chinsura, on its march to Chandernagore, attacked a British force
under Colonel Forde. The Battle of Chinsurah lasted less than half an hour and ended with
the rout of the Dutch attackers. In 1795, during the Napoleonic wars, a British garrison
occupied the settlement. The peace of 1814 restored Hughli to the Dutch. However, in 1825,
the Dutch ceded many of their possession in India to the British, in exchange for the British
possessions in Sumatra.
Both Chinsurah and Hooghly played a role in the Bengal renaissance and the Indian
independence movement. “Vande Mataram”, India’s national song, was composed by
Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay at Joraghat in Chinsurah, who had been an alumnus of the
Hooghly Collegiate School .
Nazrul Islam’s revolutionary songs were penned while he was imprisoned by the British in
Hooghly Jail.

Gupta Dynasty
The Gupta Dynasty was one of the greatest Empires of Ancient India, it stretched across northern, central and parts of southern India
between 320 and 550 CE. The period is noted for its achievements in the arts, architecture, sciences, religion, and philosophy.
In this auction sale we are ofering some of the rarest and unlisted varieties, few of them probably ofered for the irst time in any auction.
158. Samudragupta (335-370 AD), Gold Dinar, Complete Dies, King and Queen Type (Licchavyah), Slender Style (Early Issue?), issued in
the memory of his parents Chandragupta I and Kumaradevi, Obv: king standing at right and queen at left facing each other with the crescent be-
tween both of them, king is seen gifting /feeding the queen or to be more appropriate ofering the sindoordani to the queen with his right hand, left
hand at the back holding a stick, brahmi legends at left “sri kumaradevi” and “chandra” in the right ield, Rev: goddess ambika seated on
couched lion facing to left with no mat under the feet, holding cornucopia and pasha with brahmi legend “Lichhavyah” at right to commemorate
the marriage alliance of Chandragupta I with the Kumaradevi of the Lichhavi tribe, tamgha at left, 7.64g, 19.30mm, (Altekar, Bayana Hoard #
Pl. I-3 ), about extremely ine, Very Rare Type in the series.
Altekar attributes the famous King and Queen type to Chandra Gupta I and he does not categorise it further in any class or variety like he has done
in the other Gupta coins. So the major diferential feature of this coin is that the presence of crescent between the king and queen with the addition
of “Sri” in the queen’s name. The variety where lion on reverse faces left is much rarer than the one where it faces right.
This specimen is struck with the complete dies as the tail and feet of lion is fully visible. And queen is seen in the tribhanga standing posture on
the obverse where her both legs are on the specimen which usually get omitted in this series coins.

The famous Horse Sacriice type
Ashwamedha Parakramah and Haymedha Parakramah
of Chakravati Raja Samudragupta
Ashwamedha or Haymedha was one of the grandest of the Vedic religious rites of ancient India, performed
by a king to celebrate or to be more precise is to prove their imperial sovereignty. The ceremony is described
in detail in various Vedic writings, particularly the Shatapath Brahmana. A special ine stallion was selected
and was allowed to roam freely for a year under the protection of a royal guard. If the horse entered a foreign
country, its ruler had either to ight or to submit. If the horse was not captured during the year, it was victo-
riously brought back to the capital accompanied by the rulers of the lands it entered, and then sacriiced at
a great public ceremony, which was accompanied by much feasting and celebration. The wandering horse
was said to symbolize the Sun in its journey over the world and, consequently, the power of the king over
the whole Earth. On successfully carrying out a horse sacriice, the king could assume the title of chakra-
varti (universal monarch). The rite served not only to glorify the king but also to ensure the prosperity and
fertility of the entire kingdom.
Ashwamedha Parakramah Type
161. Samudragupta (335-370 AD), Gold Dinar, ‘Ashwamedha’ type, Obv: sacriicial horse standing left, low platform before a Yupa (sac-
riicial post), slightly bent in the centre, yupa has an ornamental pedestral in two steps, adorned with banners and ribbons, in its front, brahmi
legend ‘Rajadhiraja Prthivimavi....va jayatyahri’ (King of Kings, who conquered the earth, Restorer of Ashwamedh), around, brahmi letter ‘Si’
(Siddam) on top of a pedestal placed on the platform under the horse belly, Rev: chief queen in the guise of a goddess, standing left pedestal
carrying a ly-whisk in her lexed hand, placed on her shoulder and holding towel in left hand, brahmi legend ‘Ashwamedha Parakramah’in the
right ield and ritual needle or Soochi in the left, 8.0g, 21.83mm, Unlisted type in Altekar and BMC (the variant of BMC Pl. V-10 & Altekar
Pl. III-7) , well centre struck, choice extremely ine, Extremely Rare.
Very interesting specimen than of all the other types from the series, the throat, neck, shoulder and chest of the horse is broader than of normal
specimens. Coin has the stylised version of the horse where the front of the body is much broader and the back of the horse is seen more inclined.
The yupa is also stylized from the bottom with ribbons on the middle part of it, the extended part from the top of yupa is in the standard form
without the dotted motifs or loral designs. The placement of the letter ‘Si’ over a pedestal is a rare variation for the type.

Haymedha Parakramah Type
162. Samudragupta (335-370 AD), Gold Dinar, ‘Haymedha’type, Obv: sacriicial horse standing left, low platform before a Yupa (Sacriicial
post), slightly bent in the centre, yupa has an ornamental pedestal of two steps, adorned with banners and ribbon at bottom, two crescents at the
rump seen just above the horse, brahmi legend ‘Rajadhirajah Prthvivijitya (divamjayatyarhitah vajimedah)....above the horse’, brahmi letter
‘Si’ (Siddam) under the horse belly, Rev: chief queen in the guise of a goddess standing left on a circular mat pedestal carrying a ly-whisk in
her lexed hand which is placed on her shoulder and holding towel in the left hand, she wears a crest ornament on the forehead. Brahmi leg-
end ‘Haymedha Parakramah’in the right ield and ritual needle or sacriicial Suchi (a spear like pointed object) before the queen adorned with
a illet, 7.60g, 20.09mm, Unlisted, about very ine, Unique.
The major point to note is the usage of a diferent variant of the word Haya which in Sanskrit or Hindi is the synonym of Ashwa alias Ghotak,
Raviputra, Turang, Saindhav, Dadhika, Sarta etc.It could be noted from this specimen that at the time of issuing the Ashwamedha coins to com-
memorate and to celebrate the Vedic ritual, the orders were issued to celebrate this event in grandeur in the whole Gupta Kingdom and simultane-
ously the royal court would have selected some prominent and major coin mints to strike the Horse Sacriice coins. And one of them would have
minted this typical diferent type than the usual Ashwamedha types where they have used the Sanskrit word “HAYA” instead of “ASHWA” and
struck Haymedha Parakramah.
This specimen is as similar as the Battle-Axe type where the word “Kr” was used instead of “Samudra” in obverse. And similarly of Tiger-Slayer
type where the word “Vyaghra-Nihanta” is used instead of “Raja Samudragupta” on the reverse.
Highly signiicant coin from the Gupta Dynasty as “Haya” is readable instead of “Ashwa” on this. Only 2-3 specimens are known including this
one. Unlisted in all the major reference catalogs of Gupta coins including the Altekar – Bayana Hoard, BMC. First time ofered in any auction.
Estimate : ` 20,00,000 - 40,00,000

upper half body and the head bare only, holding arrow in right hand and the left hand is seen holding the bow at center from inside the string, bow

Bayana Hoard # Pl. XIII-5), about extremely ine, Extremely Rare.
Many coins are reported in Chandragupta II with the reverse face but this combination of reverse face and reverse archer is ofered for the irst
time. The interesting thing to note here is that the bow is held by king in reverse position and his hand is coming within the bow and resting at the
center of the bow. Usually what we see is the reverse looking king with his hand going up and holding the bow from the top but this specimen has
the hand coming to the down holding the bow from the center. The bow is seen resting on the shoulders of the king. And if the reverse is observed
than the lotus stem will be seen going from inside the lower part of hand to the top. This type of the king’s position makes this specimen amazing.
Lovely artistic features overall on this beautiful specimen.
BMC catalog does not list this in their collection, very interesting specimen missing from various collections.

# Pl. XVIII-6 ?), about extremely ine+, Extremely Rare.
This specimen is very amazing because of its high artistic features. The important noticeable point is the unusual pose of the goddess on the
reverse where she has seen seated in the riding posture on the lion as if she is riding a horse (usually it is observed that the goddess has the front
facing seated pose). The lion appears to be charging towards the left with its mouth agape in a ferocious roar. The king’s posture is dynamic where
he is leaning forward and trampling the lion under his foot rather than standing straight.

  • 6. 4 The Dawk or Dak was a very old system of runners that served the Indus Valley of Sindh, (Now in Pakistan). The term Scinde Dawk refers to the irst adhesive postage stamps in Asia. The name derives from the words “Scinde”, the British spelling of the name of the province of “Sindh”, and “Dawk”, the anglicised spelling of the Hindustani word “Dak” or Post. In 1852, India became the 10th country in the world and irst in asia to issue postage stamps in a remote province called scinde. Sir. Bartle Frere designed the stamps . The Scinde Dawk Stamps were issued for the irst time on 01-07-1852 and subsequently stopped on 30-09-1854 and the balance was ordained to be destroyed. White & Red were locally done, whereas blue was printed by De La Rue. Red was the result to replace white as it was not visible in candle light. STAMPS Scinde Dawk B artle Frere of the East India Company became the Chief Commissioner of Sindh in 1850. Following the English example set by Rowland Hill, Frere improved upon the postal system of Sindh by introducing a cheap and uniform rate for postage, independent of distance travelled. In 1851 the run- ners were replaced with an eicient system using horses and camels, following routes through Scinde province, generally along the valley of the Indus river. The mail was carried quickly and eiciently, connecting government oices and post oices from Karachi through Kotri and Hyderabad up to Sukkur. 01 03 02 04 All Scinde Dawk Stamps presented here are Printed By De La Rue, London 1. Edward VII, Registered Envelope, 1a, & 4a, Addressed to “The Maharaja of Kashimbazar, Murshedabad “, 2nd Dely 19 NOV, Registered Post Seal “SAARAFA BAZAR, Chuchura”, Good Condition, Rare. Portuguese founded the town of Chuchura (Hooghly) in 1579, but the district has thousands of years of heritage in the form of the great kingdom of Bhurshut. The city lourished as a trading port and some religious structures were built. One such structure is a Christian church dedicated to a statue of Mary, brought by the Portuguese. In the 17th century, political disorder struck the city and the Mughal governor of Bengal expelled the Portuguese. The leeing Portuguese lost the statue in the river, but local people later found it on the river bank. The arrested Portuguese were taken to Delhi, where a death sentence of trampling by elephants was decreed. When the emperor Shah Jahan heard this he ordered the priests released and granted a piece of land on the bank of the river Hooghly, where the statue of Mary was re-established. There the Portuguese constructed a church to house the statue, which still receives pilgrims today. In 1656 the Dutch erected a factory on the site of the town. At that time Calcutta was the principal settlement in Dutch Bengal, who used it as a base for the Dutch intra-Asian opium trade. In 1759 the garrison of Chinsura, on its march to Chandernagore, attacked a British force under Colonel Forde. The Battle of Chinsurah lasted less than half an hour and ended with the rout of the Dutch attackers. In 1795, during the Napoleonic wars, a British garrison occupied the settlement. The peace of 1814 restored Hughli to the Dutch. However, in 1825, the Dutch ceded many of their possession in India to the British, in exchange for the British possessions in Sumatra. Both Chinsurah and Hooghly played a role in the Bengal renaissance and the Indian independence movement. “Vande Mataram”, India’s national song, was composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay at Joraghat in Chinsurah, who had been an alumnus of the Hooghly Collegiate School . Nazrul Islam’s revolutionary songs were penned while he was imprisoned by the British in Hooghly Jail. Estimate : ` 7,500-10,000

  • 29. Auction 20 27 Gupta Dynasty The Gupta Dynasty was one of the greatest Empires of Ancient India, it stretched across northern, central and parts of southern India between 320 and 550 CE. The period is noted for its achievements in the arts, architecture, sciences, religion, and philosophy. In this auction sale we are ofering some of the rarest and unlisted varieties, few of them probably ofered for the irst time in any auction. 158. Samudragupta (335-370 AD), Gold Dinar, Complete Dies, King and Queen Type (Licchavyah), Slender Style (Early Issue?), issued in the memory of his parents Chandragupta I and Kumaradevi, Obv: king standing at right and queen at left facing each other with the crescent be- tween both of them, king is seen gifting /feeding the queen or to be more appropriate ofering the sindoordani to the queen with his right hand, left hand at the back holding a stick, brahmi legends at left “sri kumaradevi” and “chandra” in the right ield, Rev: goddess ambika seated on couched lion facing to left with no mat under the feet, holding cornucopia and pasha with brahmi legend “Lichhavyah” at right to commemorate the marriage alliance of Chandragupta I with the Kumaradevi of the Lichhavi tribe, tamgha at left, 7.64g, 19.30mm, (Altekar, Bayana Hoard # Pl. I-3 ), about extremely ine, Very Rare Type in the series. Altekar attributes the famous King and Queen type to Chandra Gupta I and he does not categorise it further in any class or variety like he has done in the other Gupta coins. So the major diferential feature of this coin is that the presence of crescent between the king and queen with the addition of “Sri” in the queen’s name. The variety where lion on reverse faces left is much rarer than the one where it faces right. This specimen is struck with the complete dies as the tail and feet of lion is fully visible. And queen is seen in the tribhanga standing posture on the obverse where her both legs are on the specimen which usually get omitted in this series coins. Estimate : ` 2,75,000 - 3,25,000 159. • 30. Coins Of Ancient India 28 The famous Horse Sacriice type  Ashwamedha Parakramah and Haymedha Parakramah of Chakravati Raja Samudragupta Ashwamedha or Haymedha was one of the grandest of the Vedic religious rites of ancient India, performed by a king to celebrate or to be more precise is to prove their imperial sovereignty. The ceremony is described in detail in various Vedic writings, particularly the Shatapath Brahmana. A special ine stallion was selected and was allowed to roam freely for a year under the protection of a royal guard. If the horse entered a foreign country, its ruler had either to ight or to submit. If the horse was not captured during the year, it was victo- riously brought back to the capital accompanied by the rulers of the lands it entered, and then sacriiced at a great public ceremony, which was accompanied by much feasting and celebration. The wandering horse was said to symbolize the Sun in its journey over the world and, consequently, the power of the king over the whole Earth. On successfully carrying out a horse sacriice, the king could assume the title of chakra- varti (universal monarch). The rite served not only to glorify the king but also to ensure the prosperity and fertility of the entire kingdom. Ashwamedha Parakramah Type 161. Samudragupta (335-370 AD), Gold Dinar, ‘Ashwamedha’ type, Obv: sacriicial horse standing left, low platform before a Yupa (sac- riicial post), slightly bent in the centre, yupa has an ornamental pedestral in two steps, adorned with banners and ribbons, in its front, brahmi legend ‘Rajadhiraja Prthivimavi....va jayatyahri’ (King of Kings, who conquered the earth, Restorer of Ashwamedh), around, brahmi letter ‘Si’ (Siddam) on top of a pedestal placed on the platform under the horse belly, Rev: chief queen in the guise of a goddess, standing left pedestal carrying a ly-whisk in her lexed hand, placed on her shoulder and holding towel in left hand, brahmi legend ‘Ashwamedha Parakramah’in the right ield and ritual needle or Soochi in the left, 8.0g, 21.83mm, Unlisted type in Altekar and BMC (the variant of BMC Pl. V-10 & Altekar Pl. III-7) , well centre struck, choice extremely ine, Extremely Rare. Very interesting specimen than of all the other types from the series, the throat, neck, shoulder and chest of the horse is broader than of normal specimens. Coin has the stylised version of the horse where the front of the body is much broader and the back of the horse is seen more inclined. The yupa is also stylized from the bottom with ribbons on the middle part of it, the extended part from the top of yupa is in the standard form without the dotted motifs or loral designs. The placement of the letter ‘Si’ over a pedestal is a rare variation for the type. Estimate : ` 4,50,000 - 6,50,000 161
  • 31. Auction 20 29 Haymedha Parakramah Type 162. Samudragupta (335-370 AD), Gold Dinar, ‘Haymedha’type, Obv: sacriicial horse standing left, low platform before a Yupa (Sacriicial post), slightly bent in the centre, yupa has an ornamental pedestal of two steps, adorned with banners and ribbon at bottom, two crescents at the rump seen just above the horse, brahmi legend ‘Rajadhirajah Prthvivijitya (divamjayatyarhitah vajimedah)....above the horse’, brahmi letter ‘Si’ (Siddam) under the horse belly, Rev: chief queen in the guise of a goddess standing left on a circular mat pedestal carrying a ly-whisk in her lexed hand which is placed on her shoulder and holding towel in the left hand, she wears a crest ornament on the forehead. Brahmi leg- end ‘Haymedha Parakramah’in the right ield and ritual needle or sacriicial Suchi (a spear like pointed object) before the queen adorned with a illet, 7.60g, 20.09mm, Unlisted, about very ine, Unique. The major point to note is the usage of a diferent variant of the word Haya which in Sanskrit or Hindi is the synonym of Ashwa alias Ghotak, Raviputra, Turang, Saindhav, Dadhika, Sarta etc.It could be noted from this specimen that at the time of issuing the Ashwamedha coins to com- memorate and to celebrate the Vedic ritual, the orders were issued to celebrate this event in grandeur in the whole Gupta Kingdom and simultane- ously the royal court would have selected some prominent and major coin mints to strike the Horse Sacriice coins. And one of them would have minted this typical diferent type than the usual Ashwamedha types where they have used the Sanskrit word “HAYA” instead of “ASHWA” and struck Haymedha Parakramah. This specimen is as similar as the Battle-Axe type where the word “Kr” was used instead of “Samudra” in obverse. And similarly of Tiger-Slayer type where the word “Vyaghra-Nihanta” is used instead of “Raja Samudragupta” on the reverse. Highly signiicant coin from the Gupta Dynasty as “Haya” is readable instead of “Ashwa” on this. Only 2-3 specimens are known including this one. Unlisted in all the major reference catalogs of Gupta coins including the Altekar – Bayana Hoard, BMC. First time ofered in any auction. Estimate : ` 20,00,000 - 40,00,000 Ra Ja Dhi Ra j Pri ha Vi Ma Vi Ji Tya Ha Y Me dha Pa Ra Kra Ma H

The interesting thing to note here is that the bow is held by king in reverse position and his hand is coming within the bow and resting at the center of the bow. Usually what we see is the reverse looking king with his hand going up and holding the bow from the top but this specimen has the hand coming to the down holding the bow from the center.
