Hi my name is Marten, Since one I’ve been working with distributed scrum teams and I would like to share some thoughts and ideas about the subject
This is my first IGNITE talk ever, so this can go two ways Or I tell a story which might inspire you Or I screw up which will give you a good laugh Either way, you win
This is it right? SCRUM. High energy level, intensive collaboration towards one single and shared goal
So how do you implement these typcial aspects of a scrum team? When your team is not sharing the same space and time zone? The trick is to consider it as a long distance relationship
A long distance relationship? You can hear your friends say: Don’t do it man, this thing will break your heart
But the thing is. Long distance relationships do work If the love is there…. All you need to do is willingness to invest.
So the next minutes will be all about clichés and open doors And guess what… they are all true. There: cliché number one
Avoid email as much as possible You are a distributed team, therefore you lack the richest form of communication. Do not replace it with poor communication…. Learn to use better alternatives
Get the best communication and collaboration tools you can get And don ’ t wait for your company to provide you the tools, experiment with whatever you can get your hands on
Keep the lines open Get used to small talk and ad hoc 1 on 1 ’ s with your peers on the other side or the world
If you ’ re not physically together… at least get virtually together
Take advantage of the benefits Especially with different time zones . The opening hours
If you ’ re not physically together… at least get virtually together
Take advantage of the benefits Especially with different time zones . The opening hours
And most important of all TRAVEL The distance won ’ t be a big problem as long as you reinforce the foundations of your team on a regular basis
My message to ING and our suppliers: FACILITATE Give the team everything it needs for a high quality collaboration So pay attention during the next presentation of Ruud about the new way of working
Make them a autonomous, self supporting and self managing team In return you get results that will exceed your expectations
Change the relation with your suppliers and customers Get rid of this low trust contract you have and be ready to get intimate with each other Open your networks and share information as much as possible
If you ’ re not ready to take these measures, than take the advice of your friends: DON ’ T DO IT Co-locate your team, give them a scrum board and a year supply of sticky notes and get cracking
