Persuasive Essay About School Shootings
Since the year 2000, there have been more than 188 school shootings reported on both high school
and college campuses (Erickson). As each shooting occurs, the number of injuries and death tolls
continue to rise. People across the country are determined to find the answer to the key question,
"What can we do to keep our students, faculty, children, and families safe?" This question is not
easily answered while imagining all the possible consequences. The individuals directly involved
with the nightmare of school shootings are campus security, faculty, and students. They all can play
a part in keeping their school safe when gunfire transpires among them. To find the best solution for
school safety across the country, a decision needs to be made between the ... Show more content on

As a current student at Delgado Community College, I perceived that there are barely any campus
police patrolling the perimeter, despite having a building within campus. This causes for concern
due to recent school tragedies that have occurred just this year. Among the college related shootings
in 2018, there were more than 10 high school shootings (Ahmed). The high school I attended in
2008, had a student count of less than 500 girls, and no security if any emergency were to transpire.
It was a small campus consisted of two, old buildings that were easily accessed during school hours.
If there was an active shooter, there would be nothing we could have done except to hide and pray
no one gets hurt. If campuses have few security officers, or none, we expect our faculty and teachers
to protect us. But, for them to protect students and other faculty, they need the proper equipment to
do so. As Timothy Wheeler describes the words of Massad Ayoob, "The only solution is a prepared
and brave defender with a proper lifesaving tool – a gun." Teachers and faculty need to have access

Pacific Theater-Pearl Harbor
Hideki Tojo was described positively by the Nazi press in Germany. He was negatively presented in
British newspapers. He was first the chief of staff of Japan's Kwantung Army who invaded China.
Next he became the prime minister of Japan. He met with Emperor Hirohito to talk about peace.
Tojo promised to try to keep peace with the Americans, but of course went back on his promise.
Evidence of this was the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Japan had been using secret communication
codes to start to prepare for a strike. The United States military worked on breaking the codes to try
to find out what the Japanese were going to do to America. They finally broke the codes. The only
problem was that they didn't know where the attack was going to come from. Roosevelt sent out
"war–warnings" to the people in November of 1941. The warnings were sent to military
commanders in Guam, the Philippines, and Hawaii. Roosevelt did not want the United States to
make the first act for war. The nation waited for an entire month. The Japanese code that had been
broken said that Japan rejects all peace treaties or proposals from America. Roosevelt declared,
"This means war" on December 6, 1941 to America. The war that Adolf Hitler started in September,
1939, literally exploded into a huge worldly conflict today on December 7, 1941. Japanese bombers
have been striking, with no warnings, at Pearl Harbor naval base at Honolulu, Hawaii, and bases at
Manila, in the Philippines. Early in the

1955: Emmett Till Emmett Till was a 14 year old from Chicago who was visiting relatives in
Mississippi when he was forced from his family's home and brutally beaten and then shot in the
head. Afterwards, he body was thrown in the Tallahatchie River. It was said that he was killed
because he whistled at a white woman. His mother, Mamie Till–Mobley, had his body returned to
Chicago where she held an open casket funeral. She wanted everyone to see what happened to her
son. A picture of Emmett Till was shown all over the country which helped encourage people to start
the Civil Right movement. Emmett Till's murderers were proven not guilty. Months after the trial,
they confessed their guilt to the crime in an interview which was published in Look Magazine. "And
the fact that Emmett Till, a young black man, could be found floating down the river in Mississippi,
as, indeed, many had been done over the years, this set in concrete the determination of people to

Persuasive Essay On Stop School Shootings
School is a place to study and learn. However, we have to think our safety sometimes, even we are
not in the battle field. Killing someone is a crime. People know it, but they are still doing that and
someone picked school where the most defenseless and innocent students have to go everyday. The
reason why they choose this place because they know there isn't anyone can stop them. School
shooting has gone up from 4 cases in 2000 to 40 cases in 2014 (Wikipedia). A few unarmed guards
are not going to stop them at all. We need trained armed guard and police officers in schools.

By allowing teachers take firearms training and carrying concealed weapon in school. The reason
we should do it is police have a response time. The NYPD response time for critical calls remained
flat at 6 minutes and 37 seconds (New York City Police Department). If we put police officers in
school, this response time will be significant reduced. Even if we reduce this time to a really short of
time, the first ones who notice the crime are still teachers and students in the class. People also may
say if you have a gun you are more likely to be killed. That is just wrong. There are over 51,000
NYPD officers in New York and everyone of them have a gun. In 2014, three of them were killed in
gunfire (Officer Down Memorial Page). It will not increase the death rate by have that weapon. But
if a teacher have a weapon and the training to stop the crime before it become a massacre, it will

Persuasive Essay On Gun Control
In the U.S. constitution, the Second Amendment states that "A well–regulated Militia, being
necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be
infringed." (Cornelledu, n.d). This statement has created significant argument regarding the
Amendment's proposed meaning. Gun control is believed to be a government policy or principle to
regulate or limit the transaction and practice of firearms. Congress often do not accomplish the
preferred result; therefore, the country is somewhat divided on the notion of gun regulations. Some
advocate there is excessive government, while others feel there is insufficient. These two conflicting
opinions leave the federal government open to a verdict on whether or not to eradicate one of our
Constitutional rights, or to keep permitting people the right to possess a gun. Some individuals who
quote the Second Amendment distinguish the difference between their world and that of the people
who wrote it. Historically, the perception that the 2nd Amendment was written in should also be
considered. When the country was originally being structured, the 2nd Amendment was an essential
step to becoming independent because it was a way for the states to organize their own militias.

Persuasive Essay On Concealed Shootings
Imagine being a loved one of a student or faculty member who has been killed or held hostage while
attending what should be one of the most desirable and safest places to be, a college campus. With
the amount of school shootings beginning to increase dramatically over the past few years,
something needs to be done to reduce the devastating problem. If Michigan college and university
students and staff were able to carry concealed weapons on campus, with the proper training and
knowledge, the amount of school shootings in Michigan would decline indisputably. Concealed
carry permits are great for colleges and universities because it increases the safety for the students
enrolled and staff employed there, creates an awareness of someone who can counter act their
deadly intent, and because the people who get concealed carry permits want to protect others. Along
with this initiative, of course, many safety measures would have to be taken in order to ensure
everyone is kept as safe as possible. Precautions that would be taken include: everyone who wishes
to carry a concealed weapon would be forced to take a concealed carry permit program by a
certified instructor, and carry their permit license with them wherever they go. Along with the state
of Michigan's concealed carry permit program, every student or staff member that expresses interest
in carrying a concealed weapon would need to take a different program set up by the college on the
rules and regulations that go along with

Rampage Shootings : The Social Roots Of School Shootings
Rampage–style school shootings are rare and tragic events. Although measures of prevention have
become more advanced, school shootings have increased in frequency over the 20th century and the
beginning of the 21st. Here in the United States, they have become especially prevalent, with 63
shootings just this year (Acevedo). The aftermath of rampage shootings leaves gaping holes and
questions in communities. People try to heal and seek closure at their own pace, but the biggest
question most are left with is "why"? In Rampage: The Social Roots of School Shootings, Katherine
S. Newman seeks to answer this question. She lays out her research and methodology for studying
rampage shootings and comes to the conclusion that shootings are not spontaneous, but rather the
build up of psychological issues and negative sociological situations within a student's community
that causes them to seek to regain power over their own lives through a rampage shooting. The story
Rampage builds out of the narratives of shooters and their victims along with national data and
trends is important because it highlights the places that our societies fail in providing a safety net for
deviant students and their peers. Newman begins her book by telling the stories of two different
rampage shootings, at Heath High School and Westside Middle School. Once she establishes the
shooters and the subjects of her study, Newman lays out her thesis and explains that her research
shows that many factors contribute

Gun Violence In America
Gun violence has been an issue in the United States for a long time. To address the topic of gun
violence, one must understand the statistical data and why gun violence is a big issue. From the
Columbine shooting to the recent Las Vegas shooting, this violence is in desperate need of being
addressed. In the year 2013, there were 33,636 deaths from a firearm in the U.S., meaning on an
average day 95 Americans were killed. Also on average, there are nearly 12,000–gun homicides a
year (Gun, 2017). This type of violence leave's people physically and psychologically impacted for
the rest of their lives. This topic is very controversial over gun control or pro–gun rights and the best
strategic action to take, but overall nearly everyone in the United States can agree that they want
less gun violence. The "CNN" and "New York Times" articles below give solutions on how to
resolve gun violence, but both also have types of bias and heuristics. The article "The Case for Gun
Rights is Stronger than You Think," by William Bennett, starts off telling the reader how he was
asked the question, "how do we make our schools safer and prevent another massacre like Sandy
Hook from happening?" during a press conference. He proposes if there is one person armed who is
qualified and trained to handle the firearm, it might prevent or reduce the tragedy. One example of
evidence William Bennett uses to back up his claims is the shooting in Colorado Springs at a
church, that happened in 2007. A

The Issue Of Gun Rights
Gun Rights Even though congressional gun–related legislation remains stalemated, there is still a
continued argument over whether laws should be enacted to restrict guns or not enacted to allow
gun rights. Not allowing law abiding citizens, who support the constitution, to exercise their rights
to obtain and own firearms is unjust. Not only does this lead to making all gun owners criminals, it
also makes them easy targets. Citizens who pass background checks should be allowed to obtain and
possess firearms and be able to have concealed carry. Congress should not enact gun control laws
because American's have the right to protect themselves against criminals who usually find ways
around gun restrictions. Rather than hastily passing gun control laws, Congress should pass laws
and focus on issues like awareness and treatment of mental illnesses. Citizens of the United States
have the Constitutional right to bear arms. The Second Amendment of the Constitution reads: "A
well–regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep
and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Not to mention that the military fights and dies for rights
given to us via the Constitution. "All these brave men and women that are trained in firearms, that
signed up to serve in the military, they're largely disarmed especially on our military bases, We need
to look at letting the men and women that know firearms and are trained in them do what they do

Argumentative Essay: Gun Control In The United States
Gun Control Nick Neff block 2 day 2 and 4
Gun control and the process to possess firearms more difficult has been a controversial topic in
politics for decades. Imagine how the founding fathers of the United States would feel about many
modern day politicians proposing for more gun control. Disarming Americans will strip law–abiding
citizens from protection of the crazy criminals who will not obey the law. Founding fathers; George
Washington, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and many
others would be unimpressed at these politicians removing pieces from the Constitution slowly.
The United States has the most gun–related deaths over any other first–world country. "The United
States is the leader in per–capita gun deaths among industrial nations"(Gun Control). However, the
countries that are compared to the United States in the gun control talk are not similar to the United
States in most categories. According to an article by Ryan McMaken of Mises Wire, erse today,

so deranged as to attack police stations, shooting ranges, or gun shows"(LaRosa). Criminals do not

Mass School Shootings in America Essay
American schools became dangerous places at the end of the twentieth century. Children as young
as twelve and thirteen came to school not to study but to shoot as many people as possible. Even as
these students transformed schools into war zones, teachers and other students did what they could
to restore order and to save lives. In doing so, they became unlikely heroes on America's latest
battlefield. Although violence in schools is nothing new, multiple shootings are. According to the
1999 Annual Report on School Violence, the number of such shootings increased from one in 1994–
95 to five in 1997–98. Tragically, the epidemic of violence continued, and in December 1999, one
television newscast called a shooting in Oklahoma the ninth ... Show more content on

One such case occurred in Moses Lake, Washington, in February 1996 when Barry Loukaitis killed
a "popular boy who had teased him" (Egan). But he also killed another student and a teacher. Asked
why he shot the other two, Loukaikis was not able to give any reason. He said mysteriously, "I don't
know. I guess reflex took over" (Egan). If revenge is sometimes a motive, it is clearly not the only
one. Failed romantic relationships also seem to motivate some shootings, although most romances
seem too casual to explain this level of violence. According to some experts, teenagers–especially
those who come from "fractured" families–"depend more on each other than [on] their parents"
(Lore A1). As a result, they may feel the sting of rejection more deeply than they would otherwise.
This emotional pain may lead to violence. One such case may have occurred in Jonesboro,
Arkansas. Mitchell Johnson listed the names of a teacher and four girls whom he planned to kill,
including his ex–girlfriend (Bragg, "Jonesboro Dazed"). A student in Pearl, Mississippi killed his
mother with a butcher knife and shot nine students. Two died, and one of them was a former
girlfriend (Helmore). Sometimes, immaturity or mental illness played an undeniable role. Such was
certainly the case at an alternative school in DeKalb County, Georgia, where a student gunned down
Horace Pierpont ("Bucky") Morgan. Morgan–who taught reading, poetry, and creative

Defense Of Self, Home And Family
Defense of Self, Home and Family. "A well–regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a
Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." (Second
Amendment) The second amendment was written during a time when a gun was required by law to
be in every household for the protection of the residents. Don B. Kates, a civil rights attorney and
criminologist, writes in "Is Gun Ownership a Right" that almost all civilian males of military age
had to appear with their own guns when called for militia training or service (13). In those days
traveling a long distance was met with many perils, highway men, and dangerous animals to name
but a few, a gun was needed to insure ones safety. Today it is considered foolish and unsafe to carry
a gun, In fact anti–gun activists would have you believe that you are in more danger carrying a gun
then not carrying one. Oppressive gun laws are making it difficult for honest law abiding citizens to
obtain and carry firearms. While some laws are effective; such as not selling to convicted felons,
others gun laws are doing more harm then good. The government needs to change or abolish certain
gun laws. One such law is the Gun–Free School Zones Act (GFSZA). While it is true some schools
may be better off with no guns and students carrying guns should remain strictly forbidden, arming
teachers on the other hand would not only cut down on violent behaver in schools but would be a
deterrent to further school

Persuasive Essay On Gun Control
There is a hidden danger that is plaguing much of the United States at this very moment. That
danger is the potential for gun violence. In America, 114,994 people are shot and 33,880 of those
people die every year (Brady Campaign). The United States also has the highest guns per capita rate
in the world. It only contains 4.4% of the total world population but has 42% of civilian owned guns
(Lopez). Recent studies have shown that out of all gun related terrorist attacks in the world, the US
had the highest proportion, coming in at 20% (Rapaport). One of the most devastating trends,
however, has been the increase in school shootings. Since the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, there
has been 1,252 mass shootings in America (Lopez). These shootings have resulted in over 1,200
people killed and over 4,400 wounded (Rapaport). These calamitous statistics beg the question:
why? Why have there been so many attacks? Why have there been so many tragedies and
casualties? The answer, in its simplest form, is gun control, or lack thereof. The basic law that gives
citizens the right to bear arms in the United States is the 2nd Amendment. The amendment states
that "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" (Constitution). This
single amendment has stemmed much controversy and conflict since its institution. The major
question is: should there be more gun control laws? The straightforward answer is yes, but there is
much more that goes into that decision. The

attempt at murder using a knife which led him to switch to firearms. From that point he began a
lengthy crime spree throughout New York. Berkowitz was a misogynist and only cared to kill young
female victims. According to police reports, he was attracted to women with long, dark, wavy hair.
He notoriously performed many of his attacks while the females sat with their boyfriends in parked
cars. He killed six people, but wounded many, many more. His first kill was a stabbing of two
women on the night of Christmas Eve. One was identified as Michelle Forman, but the other was
not identified. This involved no deaths. Then came the guns. Jody Valenti who was 19 years old and
Donna Lauria who was 18 were both shot as they sat inside a car parked. As a result, Donna was
killed. Then, Carl Denaro, age 19, was shot in the head and survived, but his girlfriend Rosemary
Keenan died. A month later Donna DeMasi age 16 and Joanne Lomino age 18 were walking home
when both were shot. One recovered, but the other ended up paralyzed. On January 30, 1977, an
engaged couple, Christine Freund and John Diel were shot where they sat together in a parked car.
Again one survived but the other died. Police concluded from evidence that the shooter had used an
uncommon .44 caliber Charter Arms Bulldog revolver in this shooting. As they pieced together
information, the previous victims were also struck with large–caliber shells which led the police to
suspect the shootings were all connected. On March 8, 1977, college student Virginia Voskerichian
was shot by a passerby as she walked and died instantly. The .44

How Do Gun Laws Affect Society
If the United States of America were to make the right to bear arms and legally own guns it would
have a negative effect on society. By getting rid of ways to legally obtain guns and ammo it would
increase the amount black market gun sales. Culturally in the United States we want the items were
told we cannot have taking away guns would only fuel the desire to obtain numerous amounts of
guns. We have already tried this type of method back in history and it wasn't successful the

If we were to make owning a gun illegal in today's society it would have the same negative side
effects but with an object that can be misused and deadly quickly. Just like Al Capone gang leaders
would take control of what would become the gun black market putting communities at risks for
violence and increases in homicides individuals who follow the laws would be forced with the
unknown every day. Law enforcement wouldn't have the upper hand anymore and wouldn't be seen
as an intimidation factor anymore. Police officers would no longer be a threat to gang leaders. If law
enforcement was no longer seen as a threat there wouldn't be a way to protect citizens from harm's
way the leaders that would be controlling gun sales would be individuals that no longer see law
enforcement as a threat to them. This would start gang rivalries just like it did in the prohibition.

right by birth. One that many love and strive for to keep in our lives. With this being said laws and
bans have been put down on the control of guns in many states and across the globe in occurrence to
many gun related violences. controlling the guns can only bring us to be more afraid of guns and not

Pros And Cons Of School Uniforms
Uniforms are a Must in Today's Climate What if America could cut down the number of school
shootings by changing one thing? Would they be willing to change it? What they could have a little
more piece of mind when their children go on a school trip by changing one thing? Would they be
willing to change it? What if someone knew that their child would not be sent home from school
because of what they are wearing by changing a single thing? Would they change it? School
uniforms are the change we need. A school shooter would stand out in a second. A child would be
easily spotted in a crowd of people on that school trip. A girl would not get sent home from school
because everyone could see her shoulder. School uniforms could save so many lives, from school
shootings to a child getting lost on a school felid trip and much in between. If every child and every
adult wore the same uniform it would make a school shooter stand out rather quickly. Even if the
person does not look like a threat, even a child would realize that person does not work here. In turn
would then make the student tell someone that does work there that something is wrong. Making it
much harder for a stranger to walk into a school without standing out. "In Long Beach, CA, after
two years of a district–wide K–8 mandatory uniform policy, reports of assault and battery in the
district's schools decreased by 34% . . . fighting incidents went down by 51%, sex offenses were cut
by 74%, . . . possession of drugs went

School Shootings And Its Effect On Society
School Shootings
We never thought that a day would come where parents would be weeping over their child's death,
and such little hands could hold such a weapon that determines if a person lives or not. School
shootings are on the rise more than ever in today's society. We imagine school to be a place where
we make new friends, learn about our society and gain an education. We all picture a safe place
where our future all begins. Lately we often ask ourselves why do high school shootings occur and
what goes on behind the minds of these individuals. As an average American we often overlook
things and say "that could never happen at my school, school shootings rarely happen".
Communities all over the county live in fear of school shootings. Instead, we should feel secure in
sending our children to school and not be afraid of what happens at school five days a week, seven
hours each day. American schools have now become a dangerous place and high school shootings
have been occurring all over the county leading to more and more deaths each year. Due to the
number of school shootings each year we often have to ask ourselves who are these shooters and
why do these events occur?
The most horrifying question about school shootings is who is capable of such a thing? As a society
we often stereotype who these killers might be because it makes it easier to steer away from their
path. The truth is there is not a clear category to point these kids out which would make easy for us
to pick

Essay on The Guy Behind the Gun: Elementary School...
On December 17, 2012, a man shot twenty–seven people–twenty of which were children–at Sandy
Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Had there been a gun for the school's defense,
the amount of those killed could have been significantly lower. As Adam Lanza entered the
building, armed and ready to kill, a good guy could have shot him, saving many lives. Guns control
prohibits good people from having the ability to stop the bad guys. Gun control laws should be
loosened because they violate the Constitution, decrease protection, and it is proven that gun control
laws only result in higher crime rate. One of the problems with gun control is that it violates the
Constitution. The second amendment promises "the right ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Concealed carry laws also reduce rapes, aggravated assault, and robberies. According to a survey of
male felons taken in 1982, "40% had decided not to commit a crime because they 'knew or believed
that the victim was carrying a gun'" (Agresti and Smith n. pag.). Criminals will not hesitate to harm
others, but they will cower when the tables are turned. The government should not take away the
right to defend oneself by increasing gun control. As the evidence shows, gun control prevents one
from self–protection. Not only do citizens have the right to protect themselves in public, but in their
own homes. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted a survey which found
"Americans use guns to frighten away intruders who are breaking into their homes about 498,000
times per year" (Agresti and Smith n. pag.). Without access to guns, robberies and other crimes
would increase significantly. "Guns" states in Kennesaw, Georgia there was an 89% drop in
burglaries after mandatory gun law (n. pag.). It is a proven fact possession of guns increases safety,
therefore gun control will only do harm. One has the right to protection at home as well as at school.
Media consistently reports school shootings. Shootings such as the one in Newtown kill many
students. Death of innocent children could be prevented with less gun control. For instance,
Greenfield states on October 1, 1997, Luke Woodham entered Pearl High School in

Why Do We Need To Be Armed In Schools Essay
How many more times are we going to hear about a crazed gunman walking into a school armed
and ready to kill? How many more innocent children need to die before we wake up and prepare our
teachers to fight back? The only solution is self–responsibility, arm school officials and give them a
fighting chance. No gunman is going to target a school that can defend itself and fight back. I
personally think every second counts in a school shooting.
Calling 911 and waiting for police to arrive isn't good enough. Our teachers need to be prepared to
defend themselves in case of an emergency. What happens when the closest police unit is 10
minutes away? What to do then? One of two scenarios will happen... die or become injured waiting
to be rescued, or fight back. Shouldn't we give our children and teachers a fighting chance? Arming

Why not criminal attacks? First responders and volunteer firefighters are trained to help victims of
accidents, fires, etc. Why not use this same type of program to help secure buildings where people
gather? In addition to the increase in security, a rapid response team made up of school staff and
employees would provide a role model for students in the school. Particularly in urban areas guns
are the tools of cops and crooks because no one else uses them.
The rapid response team would introduce the students to a new breed of gun carrying people that
were neither cops nor crooks. Students might become curious about guns and want to learn the right
and safe ways to use them. Doing so will also do a lot take the glamour out of guns. To balance the
"gangster" lifestyle of the rappers that young adults and young teens are into today. They would
know that their 9th grade English teacher carries a gun too. I mean how cool would it be to carry the

Six years later in Pearl, Mississippi, Assistant Principal Joel Myrick was walking to his office when
he heard the distinct sounds of gunfire in his school. His instincts were to grab his sidearm.
However, federal laws banned him from carrying it on school property (Laugesen, 2007). He
watched as the gunman leveled his rifle at students and pulled the trigger. As soon as the gunman
heard the sounds of approaching emergency responders, he proceeded with his plan by attempting to
flee the high school and make his way to the nearby middle school. While police were dealing with
the situation at the high school, he would have the freedom to inflict more deaths (Laugesen, 1999).
However, in a heroic act, Myrick had run to his truck to retrieve his handgun, hoping he would not
have to use it on a student. As the gunman was fleeing in his mother's car, Myrick leveled his gun at
the shooter and caused him to lose control of the vehicle (Laugesen, 1999). In the heat and
adrenaline rush of the moment, a properly trained person was able to save untold lives that day at
the middle school and possibly other locations. While he was waiting for law enforcement to arrive,
emotions could have justified him pulling the trigger, but his training and moral compass

Understanding School Shootings
Understanding School Shootings There are a lot of school shootings happening in the U.S., today.
These school shooters have problems, which they need to be helped immediately. Schools need
more security in order to prepare for these shootings. People never know or expect a person in their
school to start shooting a gun at innocent people. Throughout years, more and more shootings are
occurring, we need to find out what causes these tragic dilemmas in schools. Students need to help
out other students, nevertheless, at least show respect to more students. I know that most school
shooters have something in common. "These commercially manufactured psychotic drugs (Prozac,
Ritalin, Paxil, Luvox, etc.) are probably triggering psychotic behavior in already unstable
individuals, and this potential connection needs to be officially investigated immediately." (Freydis,
pg. 2) However, most school shootings happen in the first few hours of school, and males ages 13 to
20 are the most common school shooters. What this means is they have a mental illness, although
they can't control it all the time. They often dwell about their life. School shootings occur within 6
months today; most shootings are with pistols, and the shooter ends up passing up his life in the end.
(1b: SV; SV, and SV.) The shooter is generally a loner, or he doesn't have many friends. This shows
that he doesn't belong in his school, so he should probably try to go to a different school to see if he

Active Shooter
Active School Shooter Introduction The intention of this paper is to look at and present some issues
and strategies that members of a school community think about when trying to create safer schools.
Particularly when addressing an active shooter in a school setting. A major issue to consider when
trying to keep all schools safe, is the simple fact that no two schools are the same. Understanding
this can lead us to the conclusion that it is impossible to have one global plan or program that can be
100% effective in all schools. "Violence prevention programs work best when they incorporate
multiple strategies and address the full range of possible acts of violence in schools. For any set of
policies to work, it must be established and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It would be a wise idea for school administrators to have a comprehensive security assessment of
the school's physical design, safety policies, and emergency procedures. Once again this must be
conducted with the cooperation of school staff, emergency personnel, students, and other school
community members. Every school has different needs and safety plans may vary. According to the
IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police), there are twenty recommended actions that
can be used to prevent violence in a school setting. 1. Use school resource officers (SROs) who may
be provided by local law enforcement. SROs often provide law enforcement, law–related
counseling, and law–related education to students, faculty, and staff. Continuity of officers in
individual schools should be encouraged, so that students and SROs develop a rapport. 2. Consider
seeking one or more probation officers for use on campus to help supervise and counsel students.
This would be especially appropriate for high schools with a significant caseload of juveniles on
probation. 3. Use trained personnel–paid or volunteer–selected specifically to assist teachers and
administrators in monitoring student behavior and activities. Continuity of monitors within schools
should be encouraged to facilitate good rapport with students. Monitors should be trained on the
different types of violence likely to occur in the

David Berkowitz Essay Outline
Between the summers of 1976 and 1977, a string of seemingly random shootings took place in New
York City. For a year, the mysterious murderer terrorized the city, causing one of the biggest
manhunts in New York's history (Jenkins, 2006). The attacker appeared to be predominantly
targeting young women with long, dark hair. As a result, many women cut their hair, dyed their hair
blonde, and even wig sales increased (Harris, 2017). This high–profile case had extensive news
coverage, which added to the hysteria of the paralyzed New York City communities. Finally, he was
captured and that was not the end of David. With his wild claims, Berkowitz kept New York City on

In December of 1975, Berkowitz claims to have attacked a woman by stabbing her (Jenkins, 2006).
In addition to that, according to his journal, David set around 1,500 fires throughout New York City
around this time (Jenkins, 2006).
David Berkowitz murder spree began in late July in 1976 when he killed Donna Lauria and injured
Jody Valenti while they were sitting in Valenti's car in the Bronx area (Biography.com Editors, 2017,
para. 4). Berkowitz shot at both of them with his .44 caliber handgun around 1:00 am.
In October, he went on to shoot at a young couple in their car around Queens, thankfully they both
survived their injuries. Carl Denaro was shot in the head multiple times with a .44, and Rosemary
Keenan was left unscathed. At the time, investigators did not think there was any relation between
the two incidents (Hockenberry, 2004).
A month later, Berkowitz struck again in Queens, shooting two teen girls, Donna DeMasi and
Joanne Lomino. The teens survived, but Lomino was left a paraplegic due to her injuries
(Biography.com Editors, 2017, para. 5). The police still had not made a connection between these
attacks, as crime was increasing rapidly while unemployment was high. The NYPD could only
handle so many things at a time.

Should Teachers Have Guns In Schools
"The world is filled with violence. Because criminals carry guns,we decent law–abiding citizens
should also have guns. Otherwise they will win and the decent people will lose." James Earl Jones
said this in an interview when he was asked about being a member of the National Rifle
Association(Brianyquote.com). Every time there is a school shooting multiple questions come to
mind. What would have happened if a teacher had a gun? Should teachers have guns in schools?
Would it really be significant? If teachers were allowed to have a firearm in the classroom more
questions come up. What would happen if a student got a hold of the gun? Where would they keep
the gun?
In Pearl, Mississippi an assistant high school principal ran a mile to get his gun at home and stopped
a shooting 11 minutes before police got there. Joel Myrick, the assistant principal, would have not

want someone who is uncomfortable around a weapon, to have a weapon in school. Having a gun

want to carry one, or they might want to carry a weapon to feel more safe by the number of recent
school shootings. I believe that only one to two teachers per hallway or wing should have a gun. My

Cause And Effect Of School Shootings
High school shootings have been occurring all over the country. All incidents leading to one or more
deaths: Jonesboro, Fayetteville, Edinboro, Pearl, Moses Lake, Grayson, Olivehurst, Bethel, West
Paducah, and many more. It will never happen to me, you could say, well, it could.y Behind school
shootings students spend one hundred and eighty days per year at school, they spend so much time
getting an education, but is the environment they're in actually safe? There are many causes of
school shootings and so they are effects.
The reality of the situation is that there are many numbers of reasons that a school shooting may
happen. There have been 142 school shootings in the United States since 2013, as indicated by a
record made by Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
There are many reasons we need to use for the reasons for school shootings however the most
prevalent one is harassing. According to nobullying.com, ¨Over 77 percent of students have been
bullied verbally, mentally, and physically. Each day about 160,000 students miss school because of
bullying or because of their fear of being bullied.¨ According to nveee.org, ¨86% of students said,
"other kids picking on them, making fun of them or bullying them" causes teenagers to turn to lethal
violence in schools.¨ When a student gets harassed or bullied it adds anger inside of them and hate.
The feeling of being picked on and having this negative attention can make a child act out or feel
hatred and somehow want a way to let the anger out. They could also have it all stuffed inside with
all of these horrible thoughts and one day decide to explode which could result in a horrible
outcome. Emotional wellness issues have been frequently shown another big cause of these
shootings. Most school shooters were mentally sick or demonstrated side effects of psychological
wellness issues. An opportunity for mental and psychiatric help could help stop these shootings.
According to newyorker.com, ¨, from 2011 and 2013, more people believe that mass shootings
result from a failure of the mental–health system than from easy access to guns. Eighty per cent of
the population believes that mental illness is at least partially to

Characteristics Of School Shootings
What characteristics, if any, do school shooters have in common? Can they all be lumped into one
group of empathy–lacking, sadistic, depressed individuals, or do they each act due to their own
separate reasons? Although the media makes it seem as if school campus massacres are becoming
an increasingly common threat, the reality is that an event of that caliber is exceptionally rare. While
it is true that no two perpetrators are alike, it is important to recognize that the overwhelming
majority of school shooters follow a basic equation of personality traits, behavioral patterns, and
other characteristics. It would be impossible to create a definitive list of characteristics that every
single school shooter possesses, and researchers on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The "psychotic" type had an intact family, but did suffer from or at least show symptoms of various
psychological disorders or mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia. Finally, the "psychopathic" type,
who also came from an intact family, exhibited such behavior as narcissism and sadism and lacked
both empathy and a conscious (Langman, 2009). It is clear that although researchers do not always
agree on how to explain the behavior of school shooters, there are some fundamental traits that are
very frequently included in their studies. When news of an active shooter situation hits the media,
word spreads quickly, especially when the event takes place at a school. Before long, expert
psychologists, law enforcement personnel, and even ordinary citizens begin to look into the
shooter's personal life, attempting to find a piece of evidence that could help explain why they
opened fire. The incident that took place on October 24, 2014 at Marysville Pilchuck High School is
no exception. Fifteen year old Jaylen Fryberg entered the school cafeteria, took out a .40–caliber
handgun, and began shooting at a table of his classmates (Carter, 2014). Four students would
succumb to their injuries, and another three were critically wounded. Fryberg also took his own life
in the shooting ("Marysville Shooter Texted," 2015). If one were to place Fryberg into the Leary et

Armed and Educated
Columbine, Sandy Hook, and the UT Tower shooting are just a few examples of the terror parents,
teachers, and students face today. More and more massacres and threats are affecting our schools on
a daily basis. No one should fear to receive an education and certainly no parent should fear their
child entering the doors of an elementary school. What can we do to prevent these tragedies from
happening again? How can we strip the worry from the men, women and children involved in our
educational systems at work today? The only options to putting an end to the untimely and unfair
deaths of our teachers and students is tighter security, psych evaluations, and armed personnel. This
means of security should not only be present in high schools or Jr. Highs, but should be present in
all of our educational buildings, including colleges, elementary schools and child care centers. All of
the places listed should be aware and willing to respond with any force necessary to protect their
lives and the lives of others. More security cameras, attending at least one anti–bullying program
per school year, teachers need training to psychologically assess a troubled student, and armed
teachers should all play a role in defending and keeping our schools safe. This is not taking our
freedom but protecting our right to live and learn.

The Issue Of Gun Control
The issue of gun control is one the most heavily debated topics in today's society. With the increase
in school shootings starting around the turn of the century, gun control advocates have been blaming
guns instead of the deranged people for these heinous acts, and been calling for the banning of guns
for civilian use. Gun control would be harmful in today's day and age where people don't have
complete trust in the government and the police and where gangs are very prevalent especially in
urban areas along with the growing number of school shootings over the last 20 years. We the
people need to fight for our rights to bear arms to protect ourselves against our government and for
personal protection of ourselves and the community. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows that the 2nd amendment was created to protect ourselves against an oppressive
government and for personal self defense. Any argument against is unconstitutional and infringes
upon our rights. It makes sense to some people that since murder rates are so high nowadays, that
banning guns would make the numbers much lower. That is certainly not the case when it comes to
the United Kingdom, our close allies, when they created the Second Firearms Act of 1997. They
created this law in response to the Dunblane massacre, where a man walked into an elementary
school and shot dead 16 children, and one teacher before killing himself. The culprit committed
these murders t with 4 handguns.People thought this act would help lower the murder rate but the
results couldn 't be farther from what was expected. ,the rate of intentional murderin Dunblane in
1996(the year of the Dunblane massacre) was 1.12 per 100,000 people. It raised to 1.24 in 1997, the
year the Firearms Act went into effect and went even higher to 1.43 in 1998. The rate rose to a peak
of 2.1 in 2002 and has fallen since to 1.23 as of 2010. These lower numbers are questionable due to
the possibility of underreporting of crime by U.K. police.. In 2005, there were 765 intentional
murders in the UK and most of these were committed with knives.

Juvenile Crime In Juveniles
There is an amplified rate of recurrence with which dangerous or habitual youthful offenders are
judged in criminal court and then imprisoned in adult prison. The biggest increase in youthful
offender crime has been among the youngest offenders. A juvenile is a young person, mostly a child.
In the early 1800s, children used to be judged in the identical court as adults. They were exposed to
the same conditions as adult offenders and even received the same penalties and punishments. In
1822, an organization (society for the reformation of juvenile delinquent) conducted research, which
showed that the penitentiary system of the United States could not fully cater to the specific needs
of the juveniles. (Weis, Crutchfield & Bridges, 2001) They further suggested the invention of a
different court for the juveniles. Towards the late 1800s, the United States experienced a movement
that advocated for a clear–cut line to be drawn between adult and juvenile offenders. (Mays &
Ruddell, 2012) More groups advocating for the same emerged, they were arguing on a common
fact, that children and adults are very unusual and bear distinctly different levels of thinking. They
were not perfect; there were reports of abuse and mistreatment. In 1899, however, the Illinois
Juvenile Court Act of 1899 was passed and the first Juvenile court was established in that state. The
act considered anyone under the age of sixteen years as a Juvenile. It insisted on a rehabilitative

Finding the Root of the Problem of School Violence Essay
Finding the Root of the Problem of School Violence
After shootings at Jonesboro, Ark, Paducah, Ky, Springfield, Ore, Pearl, Miss, and Littleton, Co,
serious questions arise such as has school violence risen, and, if so, what can we do to fix it. The
truth is, school violence is on a rise, and it can be attributed to factors such as disinterest in learning,
the total preservation of the civil rights of the students at all costs, and the lack of power the teachers
and administrators have to punish misbehavior. Solutions such as forcing school uniforms, voluntary
learning, and peer mediation take a long time to implement and an even longer time to see visible
results, but they are necessary to ensure our future in America as ... Show more content on

Furthermore, larger schools mean less community involvement, which is where students first learn
fundamental ethics and punishment. Putting kids in a prison–like educational environment will only
lessen the education they receive. These so–called safety measures would not have stopped the
tragic school shootings. A better way of ending all the violence is through community involvement.
Reestablishing the family–student connection would presumable rekindle students' interest in
learning (Toby 3). Putting the parent, the most influential and basic teacher of a child, back into a
kid's life is a big step in the process of ending school violence. This way, the child can learn the
basic rules of living that he or she cannot learn in a school. Hopefully, with the parent involved, the
students would resist going to school less, and, in turn, would behave better.
The Japanese take the students desire to go to school even more seriously. Instead of forcing kids to
attend classes up to a certain age as we do in America, Japanese students are given the option of
going to school (6–7). A major problem with our school system is that large portions of students do
not want to be students. Making high school voluntary will enormously increase the production of
kids. It will allow those desirous of learning to not only learn with fewer distractions, but also help
them learn even more information. Voluntary high schools will be able to raise standards and
expectations,

also important to note, Obamsick is careful to report that the official death toll was not released until
the morning of the articles publication. Student witnesses described the perpetrators dressed in black
trench coats and masks that aimed their attacks at minorities and athletes before opening fire

eyewitnesses, audiences were able to visualize with vivid imagery what it was like to be in the midst
of it. With the majority of the country asking why the shooting occurred, the Obmascik highlights
many warning signs through the use of their witnesses. The article includes reports asking students

Gun Control In School Shootings
Imagine the notion of being defenseless against an individual holding the purpose of wreaking mass
devastation on the students and faculty inside of a school. In 2012, Sandy Hook Elementary School
in Newtown, Connecticut endured a tragedy that carries historical significance to the notion of
shielding those inside of a classroom in a worst–case situation. When twenty–six students had their
life taken away during a school massacre, the thought of permitting teachers to carry handguns
during class drew more consideration than ever. The safety of the students inside of a school facility
may be in jeopardy as manifested in school shootings such as the ones which transpired at Sandy
Hook Elementary School and Virginia Tech, where thirty–two students and teachers lost their lives
(History.com). While many feel that presenting teachers with handguns may prove harmful to safety
efforts, inflicting such standards would provide instructors and students equally with enhanced
protection and overall security.
Imagine being in the family's shoes when hearing through media reports that their child was killed
in a school shooting. If teachers had the option of being equipped with the handguns, then that child
(and the rest in the classroom) would have survived. How many more times are we going to learn
about a deranged gunman walking into a school loaded and ready to kill? How many more innocent
children need to die before we wake up and give our teachers the prospect to fight back? The only
resolution is to grant our teachers a fighting chance. No shooter is going to target a school that can
protect itself and fight back. Every second counts in a school shooting. Calling 911 and anticipating
for police to arrive isn't good enough. Spartanburg County South Carolina Sheriff Chuck Wright
says, "Our form of justice is not making it. Carry a concealed weapon. That'll fix it" (Miller, Fox
News). Then there was Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. who lately created a nationwide
uproar for advising citizens to master how to manage firearms so they can protect themselves,
because he says, "simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option" (Handelman Fox 6
Wisconsin). What happens when the nearest police unit is 10

Legal Effects Of Gun Shootings
As more states adopt the right to carry firearms laws, firearm deaths have been reduced. This is an
issue in the U.S with 29 major mass shootings with the last 10 years. The issue at hand is that in
mass shootings the shooter is able to keep firing until a police officer arrives on the scene and stops
the shooter. By this point the shooter will have killed or injured quite a bit of people before the
officers could act. This is an important statement because it would lessen the amount of
casualties/injuries. With there being more and more shootings occurring in the United States the
need for people to defend themselves needs to increase. In many situations if there had been an
individual with a concealed weapons permit, the mass shootings would have less casualties. With
there being another person with a firearm except the perpetrator and the police officer it would
reduce the chance of the perpetrator killing more people. Mass shootings in the United States would
be minimized by potential victims being armed. The per–capita gun homicide rate had fallen by
nearly half since mid to late 1990s to 2013. According to the The Washington Post the number of
guns have increased since the 1990s. The Washington Post reported that there were 357 million
legal guns in the United States with only 317 million people in the U.S as of 2013. In another article
posted by The Washington Post stated that in December of 2012, 48% of people believe that guns
protect people from being victims of

Persuasive Essay About School Shootings

  • 1. Persuasive Essay About School Shootings Since the year 2000, there have been more than 188 school shootings reported on both high school and college campuses (Erickson). As each shooting occurs, the number of injuries and death tolls continue to rise. People across the country are determined to find the answer to the key question, "What can we do to keep our students, faculty, children, and families safe?" This question is not easily answered while imagining all the possible consequences. The individuals directly involved with the nightmare of school shootings are campus security, faculty, and students. They all can play a part in keeping their school safe when gunfire transpires among them. To find the best solution for school safety across the country, a decision needs to be made between the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a current student at Delgado Community College, I perceived that there are barely any campus police patrolling the perimeter, despite having a building within campus. This causes for concern due to recent school tragedies that have occurred just this year. Among the college related shootings in 2018, there were more than 10 high school shootings (Ahmed). The high school I attended in 2008, had a student count of less than 500 girls, and no security if any emergency were to transpire. It was a small campus consisted of two, old buildings that were easily accessed during school hours. If there was an active shooter, there would be nothing we could have done except to hide and pray no one gets hurt. If campuses have few security officers, or none, we expect our faculty and teachers to protect us. But, for them to protect students and other faculty, they need the proper equipment to do so. As Timothy Wheeler describes the words of Massad Ayoob, "The only solution is a prepared and brave defender with a proper lifesaving tool – a gun." Teachers and faculty need to have access to a ... • 2. Pacific Theater-Pearl Harbor Hideki Tojo was described positively by the Nazi press in Germany. He was negatively presented in British newspapers. Japan had been using secret communication codes to start to prepare for a strike. The United States military worked on breaking the codes to try to find out what the Japanese were going to do to America. They finally broke the codes. The only problem was that they didn't know where the attack was going to come from. Roosevelt sent out "war–warnings" to the people in November of 1941. The warnings were sent to military commanders in Guam, the Philippines, and Hawaii. Roosevelt did not want the United States to make the first act for war. The nation waited for an entire month. The Japanese code that had been broken said that Japan rejects all peace treaties or proposals from America. Roosevelt declared, "This means war" on December 6, 1941 to America. The war that Adolf Hitler started in September, 1939, literally exploded into a huge worldly conflict today on December 7, 1941. Japanese bombers have been striking, with no warnings, at Pearl Harbor naval base at Honolulu, Hawaii, and bases at Manila, in the Philippines. Early in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Emmett Till Thesis 1955: Emmett Till Emmett Till was a 14 year old from Chicago who was visiting relatives in Mississippi when he was forced from his family's home and brutally beaten and then shot in the head. Afterwards, he body was thrown in the Tallahatchie River. It was said that he was killed because he whistled at a white woman. His mother, Mamie Till–Mobley, had his body returned to Chicago where she held an open casket funeral. She wanted everyone to see what happened to her son. A picture of Emmett Till was shown all over the country which helped encourage people to start the Civil Right movement. Emmett Till's murderers were proven not guilty. Months after the trial, they confessed their guilt to the crime in an interview which was published in Look Magazine. "And the fact that Emmett Till, a young black man, could be found floating down the river in Mississippi, as, indeed, many had been done over the years, this set in concrete the determination of people to move forward." –Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, Civil Rights Leader Emmett Till's death affected people nationwide at the time. African Americans from everywhere around the country saw it as a reason to seek equality and fairness. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They demanded that the two hundred Palestinians being held in Israeli prison be released along with two German terrorists. • 4. Persuasive Essay On Stop School Shootings School is a place to study and learn. However, we have to think our safety sometimes, even we are not in the battle field. Killing someone is a crime. People know it, but they are still doing that and someone picked school where the most defenseless and innocent students have to go everyday. The reason why they choose this place because they know there isn't anyone can stop them. School shooting has gone up from 4 cases in 2000 to 40 cases in 2014 (Wikipedia). A few unarmed guards are not going to stop them at all. We need trained armed guard and police officers in schools. In Virginia Tech April 16 2007, Cho Seung Hui, a senior English major and South Korean national, left his room with 9 mm and .22 caliber pistols. He shot and killed first two victims around 0715. Then he returned with more ammunition and started his rampage in another building around 0940. It lasted 9 minutes until the police broke into the building and found that him committed suicide, and 32 people was killed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By allowing teachers take firearms training and carrying concealed weapon in school. The reason we should do it is police have a response time. The NYPD response time for critical calls remained flat at 6 minutes and 37 seconds (New York City Police Department). If we put police officers in school, this response time will be significant reduced. Even if we reduce this time to a really short of time, the first ones who notice the crime are still teachers and students in the class. People also may say if you have a gun you are more likely to be killed. That is just wrong. There are over 51,000 NYPD officers in New York and everyone of them have a gun. In 2014, three of them were killed in gunfire (Officer Down Memorial Page). It will not increase the death rate by have that weapon. But if a teacher have a weapon and the training to stop the crime before it become a massacre, it will become the best result we can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Persuasive Essay On Gun Control In the U.S. constitution, the Second Amendment states that "A well–regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." (Cornelledu, n.d). This statement has created significant argument regarding the Amendment's proposed meaning. Gun control is believed to be a government policy or principle to regulate or limit the transaction and practice of firearms. Congress often do not accomplish the preferred result; therefore, the country is somewhat divided on the notion of gun regulations. Some advocate there is excessive government, while others feel there is insufficient. These two conflicting opinions leave the federal government open to a verdict on whether or not to eradicate one of our Constitutional rights, or to keep permitting people the right to possess a gun. Some individuals who quote the Second Amendment distinguish the difference between their world and that of the people who wrote it. Historically, the perception that the 2nd Amendment was written in should also be considered. When the country was originally being structured, the 2nd Amendment was an essential step to becoming independent because it was a way for the states to organize their own militias. Firearms were a necessary part of life in the 1780's bearing in mind that hunting was one of the major sources of finding and locating food. Many Americans were also involved in agriculture and had massive areas of property that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Persuasive Essay On Concealed Shootings Imagine being a loved one of a student or faculty member who has been killed or held hostage while attending what should be one of the most desirable and safest places to be, a college campus. With the amount of school shootings beginning to increase dramatically over the past few years, something needs to be done to reduce the devastating problem. If Michigan college and university students and staff were able to carry concealed weapons on campus, with the proper training and knowledge, the amount of school shootings in Michigan would decline indisputably. Concealed carry permits are great for colleges and universities because it increases the safety for the students enrolled and staff employed there, creates an awareness of someone who can counter act their deadly intent, and because the people who get concealed carry permits want to protect others. Along with this initiative, of course, many safety measures would have to be taken in order to ensure everyone is kept as safe as possible. Precautions that would be taken include: everyone who wishes to carry a concealed weapon would be forced to take a concealed carry permit program by a certified instructor, and carry their permit license with them wherever they go. Along with the state of Michigan's concealed carry permit program, every student or staff member that expresses interest in carrying a concealed weapon would need to take a different program set up by the college on the rules and regulations that go along with ... • 7. Rampage Shootings : The Social Roots Of School Shootings Rampage–style school shootings are rare and tragic events. Although measures of prevention have become more advanced, school shootings have increased in frequency over the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. Here in the United States, they have become especially prevalent, with 63 shootings just this year (Acevedo). The aftermath of rampage shootings leaves gaping holes and questions in communities. People try to heal and seek closure at their own pace, but the biggest question most are left with is "why"? In Rampage: The Social Roots of School Shootings, Katherine S. Newman seeks to answer this question. She lays out her research and methodology for studying rampage shootings and comes to the conclusion that shootings are not spontaneous, but rather the build up of psychological issues and negative sociological situations within a student's community that causes them to seek to regain power over their own lives through a rampage shooting. The story Rampage builds out of the narratives of shooters and their victims along with national data and trends is important because it highlights the places that our societies fail in providing a safety net for deviant students and their peers. Newman begins her book by telling the stories of two different rampage shootings, at Heath High School and Westside Middle School. Once she establishes the shooters and the subjects of her study, Newman lays out her thesis and explains that her research shows that many factors contribute ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Gun Violence In America Gun violence has been an issue in the United States for a long time. To address the topic of gun violence, one must understand the statistical data and why gun violence is a big issue. From the Columbine shooting to the recent Las Vegas shooting, this violence is in desperate need of being addressed. In the year 2013, there were 33,636 deaths from a firearm in the U.S., meaning on an average day 95 Americans were killed. Also on average, there are nearly 12,000–gun homicides a year (Gun, 2017). This type of violence leave's people physically and psychologically impacted for the rest of their lives. This topic is very controversial over gun control or pro–gun rights and the best strategic action to take, but overall nearly everyone in the United States can agree that they want less gun violence. The "CNN" and "New York Times" articles below give solutions on how to resolve gun violence, but both also have types of bias and heuristics. The article "The Case for Gun Rights is Stronger than You Think," by William Bennett, starts off telling the reader how he was asked the question, "how do we make our schools safer and prevent another massacre like Sandy Hook from happening?" during a press conference. He proposes if there is one person armed who is qualified and trained to handle the firearm, it might prevent or reduce the tragedy. One example of evidence William Bennett uses to back up his claims is the shooting in Colorado Springs at a church, that happened in 2007. A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The Issue Of Gun Rights Gun Rights Even though congressional gun–related legislation remains stalemated, there is still a continued argument over whether laws should be enacted to restrict guns or not enacted to allow gun rights. Not allowing law abiding citizens, who support the constitution, to exercise their rights to obtain and own firearms is unjust. Not only does this lead to making all gun owners criminals, it also makes them easy targets. Citizens who pass background checks should be allowed to obtain and possess firearms and be able to have concealed carry. Congress should not enact gun control laws because American's have the right to protect themselves against criminals who usually find ways around gun restrictions. Rather than hastily passing gun control laws, Congress should pass laws and focus on issues like awareness and treatment of mental illnesses. Citizens of the United States have the Constitutional right to bear arms. The Second Amendment of the Constitution reads: "A well–regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Not to mention that the military fights and dies for rights given to us via the Constitution. "All these brave men and women that are trained in firearms, that signed up to serve in the military, they're largely disarmed especially on our military bases, We need to look at letting the men and women that know firearms and are trained in them do what they do best, which is ... Argumentative Essay: Gun Control In The United States Gun Control Nick Neff block 2 day 2 and 4 Gun control and the process to possess firearms more difficult has been a controversial topic in politics for decades. Imagine how the founding fathers of the United States would feel about many modern day politicians proposing for more gun control. Disarming Americans will strip law–abiding citizens from protection of the crazy criminals who will not obey the law. Founding fathers; George Washington, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and many others would be unimpressed at these politicians removing pieces from the Constitution slowly. The United States has the most gun–related deaths over any other first–world country. "The United States is the leader in per–capita gun deaths among industrial nations"(Gun Control). However, the countries that are compared to the United States in the gun control talk are not similar to the United States in most categories. • 12. Mass School Shootings in America Essay American schools became dangerous places at the end of the twentieth century. Children as young as twelve and thirteen came to school not to study but to shoot as many people as possible. Even as these students transformed schools into war zones, teachers and other students did what they could to restore order and to save lives. In doing so, they became unlikely heroes on America's latest battlefield. Although violence in schools is nothing new, multiple shootings are. According to the 1999 Annual Report on School Violence, the number of such shootings increased from one in 1994– 95 to five in 1997–98. Tragically, the epidemic of violence continued, and in December 1999, one television newscast called a shooting in Oklahoma the ninth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Asked why he shot the other two, Loukaikis was not able to give any reason. He said mysteriously, "I don't know. I guess reflex took over" (Egan). If revenge is sometimes a motive, it is clearly not the only one. Failed romantic relationships also seem to motivate some shootings, although most romances seem too casual to explain this level of violence. According to some experts, teenagers–especially those who come from "fractured" families–"depend more on each other than [on] their parents" (Lore A1). As a result, they may feel the sting of rejection more deeply than they would otherwise. This emotional pain may lead to violence. One such case may have occurred in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Mitchell Johnson listed the names of a teacher and four girls whom he planned to kill, including his ex–girlfriend (Bragg, "Jonesboro Dazed"). A student in Pearl, Mississippi killed his mother with a butcher knife and shot nine students. Two died, and one of them was a former girlfriend (Helmore). Sometimes, immaturity or mental illness played an undeniable role. Such was certainly the case at an alternative school in DeKalb County, Georgia, where a student gunned down Horace Pierpont ("Bucky") Morgan. Morgan–who taught reading, poetry, and creative ... • 13. Defense Of Self, Home And Family Defense of Self, Home and Family. "A well–regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." (Second Amendment) The second amendment was written during a time when a gun was required by law to be in every household for the protection of the residents. Don B. Kates, a civil rights attorney and criminologist, writes in "Is Gun Ownership a Right" that almost all civilian males of military age had to appear with their own guns when called for militia training or service (13). In those days traveling a long distance was met with many perils, highway men, and dangerous animals to name but a few, a gun was needed to insure ones safety. Today it is considered foolish and unsafe to carry a gun, In fact anti–gun activists would have you believe that you are in more danger carrying a gun then not carrying one. Oppressive gun laws are making it difficult for honest law abiding citizens to obtain and carry firearms. While some laws are effective; such as not selling to convicted felons, others gun laws are doing more harm then good. The government needs to change or abolish certain gun laws. One such law is the Gun–Free School Zones Act (GFSZA). While it is true some schools may be better off with no guns and students carrying guns should remain strictly forbidden, arming teachers on the other hand would not only cut down on violent behaver in schools but would be a deterrent to further school ... • 14. Persuasive Essay On Gun Control There is a hidden danger that is plaguing much of the United States at this very moment. That danger is the potential for gun violence. In America, 114,994 people are shot and 33,880 of those people die every year (Brady Campaign). The United States also has the highest guns per capita rate in the world. It only contains 4.4% of the total world population but has 42% of civilian owned guns (Lopez). Recent studies have shown that out of all gun related terrorist attacks in the world, the US had the highest proportion, coming in at 20% (Rapaport). One of the most devastating trends, however, has been the increase in school shootings. Since the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, there has been 1,252 mass shootings in America (Lopez). These shootings have resulted in over 1,200 people killed and over 4,400 wounded (Rapaport). These calamitous statistics beg the question: why? Why have there been so many attacks? Why have there been so many tragedies and casualties? The answer, in its simplest form, is gun control, or lack thereof. The basic law that gives citizens the right to bear arms in the United States is the 2nd Amendment. The amendment states that "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" (Constitution). This single amendment has stemmed much controversy and conflict since its institution. The major question is: should there be more gun control laws? The straightforward answer is yes, but there is much more that goes into that decision. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From that point he began a lengthy crime spree throughout New York. Berkowitz was a misogynist and only cared to kill young female victims. According to police reports, he was attracted to women with long, dark, wavy hair. He notoriously performed many of his attacks while the females sat with their boyfriends in parked cars. He killed six people, but wounded many, many more. His first kill was a stabbing of two women on the night of Christmas Eve. One was identified as Michelle Forman, but the other was not identified. This involved no deaths. Then came the guns. Jody Valenti who was 19 years old and Donna Lauria who was 18 were both shot as they sat inside a car parked. As a result, Donna was killed. Then, Carl Denaro, age 19, was shot in the head and survived, but his girlfriend Rosemary Keenan died. A month later Donna DeMasi age 16 and Joanne Lomino age 18 were walking home when both were shot. One recovered, but the other ended up paralyzed. On January 30, 1977, an engaged couple, Christine Freund and John Diel were shot where they sat together in a parked car. Again one survived but the other died. Police concluded from evidence that the shooter had used an uncommon .44 caliber Charter Arms Bulldog revolver in this shooting. As they pieced together information, the previous victims were also struck with large–caliber shells which led the police to suspect the shootings were all connected. Would they be willing to change it? What they could have a little more piece of mind when their children go on a school trip by changing one thing? Would they be willing to change it? What if someone knew that their child would not be sent home from school because of what they are wearing by changing a single thing? Would they change it? School uniforms are the change we need. A school shooter would stand out in a second. A child would be easily spotted in a crowd of people on that school trip. A girl would not get sent home from school because everyone could see her shoulder. School uniforms could save so many lives, from school shootings to a child getting lost on a school felid trip and much in between. If every child and every adult wore the same uniform it would make a school shooter stand out rather quickly. Even if the person does not look like a threat, even a child would realize that person does not work here. In turn would then make the student tell someone that does work there that something is wrong. Making it much harder for a stranger to walk into a school without standing out. School Shootings And Its Effect On Society School Shootings We never thought that a day would come where parents would be weeping over their child's death, and such little hands could hold such a weapon that determines if a person lives or not. School shootings are on the rise more than ever in today's society. We imagine school to be a place where we make new friends, learn about our society and gain an education. We all picture a safe place where our future all begins. Lately we often ask ourselves why do high school shootings occur and what goes on behind the minds of these individuals. As an average American we often overlook things and say "that could never happen at my school, school shootings rarely happen". Communities all over the county live in fear of school shootings. Instead, we should feel secure in sending our children to school and not be afraid of what happens at school five days a week, seven hours each day. American schools have now become a dangerous place and high school shootings have been occurring all over the county leading to more and more deaths each year. Due to the number of school shootings each year we often have to ask ourselves who are these shooters and why do these events occur? The most horrifying question about school shootings is who is capable of such a thing? Criminals will not hesitate to harm others, but they will cower when the tables are turned. The government should not take away the right to defend oneself by increasing gun control. As the evidence shows, gun control prevents one from self–protection. Not only do citizens have the right to protect themselves in public, but in their own homes. People never know or expect a person in their school to start shooting a gun at innocent people. Throughout years, more and more shootings are occurring, we need to find out what causes these tragic dilemmas in schools. Students need to help out other students, nevertheless, at least show respect to more students. I know that most school shooters have something in common. "These commercially manufactured psychotic drugs (Prozac, Ritalin, Paxil, Luvox, etc.) are probably triggering psychotic behavior in already unstable individuals, and this potential connection needs to be officially investigated immediately." (Freydis, pg. 2) However, most school shootings happen in the first few hours of school, and males ages 13 to 20 are the most common school shooters. What this means is they have a mental illness, although they can't control it all the time. They often dwell about their life. School shootings occur within 6 months today; most shootings are with pistols, and the shooter ends up passing up his life in the end. (1b: SV; SV, and SV.) Particularly when addressing an active shooter in a school setting. A major issue to consider when trying to keep all schools safe, is the simple fact that no two schools are the same. Understanding this can lead us to the conclusion that it is impossible to have one global plan or program that can be 100% effective in all schools. "Violence prevention programs work best when they incorporate multiple strategies and address the full range of possible acts of violence in schools. For any set of policies to work, it must be established and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It would be a wise idea for school administrators to have a comprehensive security assessment of the school's physical design, safety policies, and emergency procedures. Once again this must be conducted with the cooperation of school staff, emergency personnel, students, and other school community members. Every school has different needs and safety plans may vary. According to the IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police), there are twenty recommended actions that can be used to prevent violence in a school setting. 1. Use school resource officers (SROs) who may be provided by local law enforcement. SROs often provide law enforcement, law–related counseling, and law–related education to students, faculty, and staff. Continuity of officers in individual schools should be encouraged, so that students and SROs develop a rapport. 2. Consider seeking one or more probation officers for use on campus to help supervise and counsel students. This would be especially appropriate for high schools with a significant caseload of juveniles on probation. 3. Use trained personnel–paid or volunteer–selected specifically to assist teachers and administrators in monitoring student behavior and activities. Continuity of monitors within schools should be encouraged to facilitate good rapport with students. Monitors should be trained on the different types of violence likely to occur in the ... • 27. David Berkowitz Essay Outline Between the summers of 1976 and 1977, a string of seemingly random shootings took place in New York City. For a year, the mysterious murderer terrorized the city, causing one of the biggest manhunts in New York's history (Jenkins, 2006). The attacker appeared to be predominantly targeting young women with long, dark hair. As a result, many women cut their hair, dyed their hair blonde, and even wig sales increased (Harris, 2017). This high–profile case had extensive news coverage, which added to the hysteria of the paralyzed New York City communities. Finally, he was captured and that was not the end of David. With his wild claims, Berkowitz kept New York City on its toes for more than 40 years. People still do not know what to expect from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In December of 1975, Berkowitz claims to have attacked a woman by stabbing her (Jenkins, 2006). In addition to that, according to his journal, David set around 1,500 fires throughout New York City around this time (Jenkins, 2006). David Berkowitz murder spree began in late July in 1976 when he killed Donna Lauria and injured Jody Valenti while they were sitting in Valenti's car in the Bronx area (Biography.com Editors, 2017, para. 4). Berkowitz shot at both of them with his .44 caliber handgun around 1:00 am. In October, he went on to shoot at a young couple in their car around Queens, thankfully they both survived their injuries. Carl Denaro was shot in the head multiple times with a .44, and Rosemary Keenan was left unscathed. At the time, investigators did not think there was any relation between the two incidents (Hockenberry, 2004). A month later, Berkowitz struck again in Queens, shooting two teen girls, Donna DeMasi and Joanne Lomino. The teens survived, but Lomino was left a paraplegic due to her injuries (Biography.com Editors, 2017, para. 5). The police still had not made a connection between these attacks, as crime was increasing rapidly while unemployment was high. The NYPD could only handle so many things at a time. • 28. Should Teachers Have Guns In Schools "The world is filled with violence. Because criminals carry guns,we decent law–abiding citizens should also have guns. Otherwise they will win and the decent people will lose." James Earl Jones said this in an interview when he was asked about being a member of the National Rifle Association(Brianyquote.com). Every time there is a school shooting multiple questions come to mind. What would have happened if a teacher had a gun? Should teachers have guns in schools? Would it really be significant? If teachers were allowed to have a firearm in the classroom more questions come up. What would happen if a student got a hold of the gun? Where would they keep the gun? In Pearl, Mississippi an assistant high school principal ran a mile to get his gun at home and stopped a shooting 11 minutes before police got there. Joel Myrick, the assistant principal, would have not had to run home to get his gun if The Gun–Free School Zones Act of 1995 would have not been placed (Usatoday.com). It will never happen to me, you could say, well, it could.y Behind school shootings students spend one hundred and eighty days per year at school, they spend so much time getting an education, but is the environment they're in actually safe? There are many causes of school shootings and so they are effects. The reality of the situation is that there are many numbers of reasons that a school shooting may happen. There have been 142 school shootings in the United States since 2013, as indicated by a record made by Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. There are many reasons we need to use for the reasons for school shootings however the most prevalent one is harassing. According to nobullying.com, ¨Over 77 percent of students have been bullied verbally, mentally, and physically. Each day about 160,000 students miss school because of bullying or because of their fear of being bullied.¨ According to nveee.org, ¨86% of students said, "other kids picking on them, making fun of them or bullying them" causes teenagers to turn to lethal violence in schools.¨ When a student gets harassed or bullied it adds anger inside of them and hate. The feeling of being picked on and having this negative attention can make a child act out or feel hatred and somehow want a way to let the anger out. They could also have it all stuffed inside with all of these horrible thoughts and one day decide to explode which could result in a horrible outcome. Emotional wellness issues have been frequently shown another big cause of these shootings. Most school shooters were mentally sick or demonstrated side effects of psychological wellness issues. An opportunity for mental and psychiatric help could help stop these shootings. According to newyorker.com, ¨, from 2011 and 2013, more people believe that mass shootings result from a failure of the mental–health system than from easy access to guns. • 30. Characteristics Of School Shootings What characteristics, if any, do school shooters have in common? Can they all be lumped into one group of empathy–lacking, sadistic, depressed individuals, or do they each act due to their own separate reasons? Although the media makes it seem as if school campus massacres are becoming an increasingly common threat, the reality is that an event of that caliber is exceptionally rare. While it is true that no two perpetrators are alike, it is important to recognize that the overwhelming majority of school shooters follow a basic equation of personality traits, behavioral patterns, and other characteristics. The "psychotic" type had an intact family, but did suffer from or at least show symptoms of various psychological disorders or mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia. Finally, the "psychopathic" type, who also came from an intact family, exhibited such behavior as narcissism and sadism and lacked both empathy and a conscious (Langman, 2009). It is clear that although researchers do not always agree on how to explain the behavior of school shooters, there are some fundamental traits that are very frequently included in their studies. When news of an active shooter situation hits the media, word spreads quickly, especially when the event takes place at a school. Before long, expert psychologists, law enforcement personnel, and even ordinary citizens begin to look into the shooter's personal life, attempting to find a piece of evidence that could help explain why they opened fire. The incident that took place on October 24, 2014 at Marysville Pilchuck High School is no exception. Fifteen year old Jaylen Fryberg entered the school cafeteria, took out a .40–caliber handgun, and began shooting at a table of his classmates (Carter, 2014). Four students would succumb to their injuries, and another three were critically wounded. Fryberg also took his own life in the shooting ("Marysville Shooter Texted," 2015). • 31. High Schools And School Schools Armed and Educated Columbine, Sandy Hook, and the UT Tower shooting are just a few examples of the terror parents, teachers, and students face today. More and more massacres and threats are affecting our schools on a daily basis. No one should fear to receive an education and certainly no parent should fear their child entering the doors of an elementary school. What can we do to prevent these tragedies from happening again? How can we strip the worry from the men, women and children involved in our educational systems at work today? The only options to putting an end to the untimely and unfair deaths of our teachers and students is tighter security, psych evaluations, and armed personnel. This means of security should not only be present in high schools or Jr. Highs, but should be present in all of our educational buildings, including colleges, elementary schools and child care centers. All of the places listed should be aware and willing to respond with any force necessary to protect their lives and the lives of others. More security cameras, attending at least one anti–bullying program per school year, teachers need training to psychologically assess a troubled student, and armed teachers should all play a role in defending and keeping our schools safe. This is not taking our freedom but protecting our right to live and learn. Security cameras can be spotted in many places including stores, airports, gas stations, and school buildings. • 32. The Issue Of Gun Control The issue of gun control is one the most heavily debated topics in today's society. With the increase in school shootings starting around the turn of the century, gun control advocates have been blaming guns instead of the deranged people for these heinous acts, and been calling for the banning of guns for civilian use. Gun control would be harmful in today's day and age where people don't have complete trust in the government and the police and where gangs are very prevalent especially in urban areas along with the growing number of school shootings over the last 20 years. We the people need to fight for our rights to bear arms to protect ourselves against our government and for personal protection of ourselves and the community. ... Any argument against is unconstitutional and infringes upon our rights. It makes sense to some people that since murder rates are so high nowadays, that banning guns would make the numbers much lower. That is certainly not the case when it comes to the United Kingdom, our close allies, when they created the Second Firearms Act of 1997. They created this law in response to the Dunblane massacre, where a man walked into an elementary school and shot dead 16 children, and one teacher before killing himself. The culprit committed these murders t with 4 handguns.People thought this act would help lower the murder rate but the results couldn 't be farther from what was expected. ,the rate of intentional murderin Dunblane in 1996(the year of the Dunblane massacre) was 1.12 per 100,000 people. It raised to 1.24 in 1997, the year the Firearms Act went into effect and went even higher to 1.43 in 1998. The rate rose to a peak of 2.1 in 2002 and has fallen since to 1.23 as of 2010. These lower numbers are questionable due to the possibility of underreporting of crime by U.K. police.. • 33. Juvenile Crime In Juveniles There is an amplified rate of recurrence with which dangerous or habitual youthful offenders are judged in criminal court and then imprisoned in adult prison. The biggest increase in youthful offender crime has been among the youngest offenders. A juvenile is a young person, mostly a child. In the early 1800s, children used to be judged in the identical court as adults. They were exposed to the same conditions as adult offenders and even received the same penalties and punishments. In 1822, an organization (society for the reformation of juvenile delinquent) conducted research, which showed that the penitentiary system of the United States could not fully cater to the specific needs of the juveniles. (Weis, Crutchfield & Bridges, 2001) They further suggested the invention of a different court for the juveniles. Towards the late 1800s, the United States experienced a movement that advocated for a clear–cut line to be drawn between adult and juvenile offenders. (Mays & Ruddell, 2012) More groups advocating for the same emerged, they were arguing on a common fact, that children and adults are very unusual and bear distinctly different levels of thinking. They were not perfect; there were reports of abuse and mistreatment. In 1899, however, the Illinois Juvenile Court Act of 1899 was passed and the first Juvenile court was established in that state. Finding the Root of the Problem of School Violence Essay Finding the Root of the Problem of School Violence After shootings at Jonesboro, Ark, Paducah, Ky, Springfield, Ore, Pearl, Miss, and Littleton, Co, serious questions arise such as has school violence risen, and, if so, what can we do to fix it. The truth is, school violence is on a rise, and it can be attributed to factors such as disinterest in learning, the total preservation of the civil rights of the students at all costs, and the lack of power the teachers and administrators have to punish misbehavior. Solutions such as forcing school uniforms, voluntary learning, and peer mediation take a long time to implement and an even longer time to see visible results, but they are necessary to ensure our future in America as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, larger schools mean less community involvement, which is where students first learn fundamental ethics and punishment. Putting kids in a prison–like educational environment will only lessen the education they receive. These so–called safety measures would not have stopped the tragic school shootings. A better way of ending all the violence is through community involvement. Reestablishing the family–student connection would presumable rekindle students' interest in learning (Toby 3). Putting the parent, the most influential and basic teacher of a child, back into a kid's life is a big step in the process of ending school violence. This way, the child can learn the basic rules of living that he or she cannot learn in a school. Hopefully, with the parent involved, the students would resist going to school less, and, in turn, would behave better. The Japanese take the students desire to go to school even more seriously. Instead of forcing kids to attend classes up to a certain age as we do in America, Japanese students are given the option of going to school (6–7). A major problem with our school system is that large portions of students do not want to be students. Making high school voluntary will enormously increase the production of kids. It will allow those desirous of learning to not only learn with fewer distractions, but also help them learn even more information. The shooting became a national ordeal as America watched "the murders being broadcast[ed] locally and nationally on live television" (Obmascik, 1999, para. 12). It is also important to note, Obamsick is careful to report that the official death toll was not released until the morning of the articles publication. Student witnesses described the perpetrators dressed in black trench coats and masks that aimed their attacks at minorities and athletes before opening fire randomly. The article's inclusion of accounts from the perpetrators' peers particularly drew in audiences. High school senior Rachel Erbert described witnessing victims being shot: " 'I saw (a teacher) on the floor bleeding from everywhere. He was trying to direct kids, but he couldn 't talk, ' said Rachel Erbert, a 17–year–old senior. 'It was really scary. Kids were falling, and you 'd help them up. I thought I might get shot." • 37. Gun Control In School Shootings Imagine the notion of being defenseless against an individual holding the purpose of wreaking mass devastation on the students and faculty inside of a school. In 2012, Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut endured a tragedy that carries historical significance to the notion of shielding those inside of a classroom in a worst–case situation. When twenty–six students had their life taken away during a school massacre, the thought of permitting teachers to carry handguns during class drew more consideration than ever. The safety of the students inside of a school facility may be in jeopardy as manifested in school shootings such as the ones which transpired at Sandy Hook Elementary School and Virginia Tech, where thirty–two students and teachers lost their lives (History.com). While many feel that presenting teachers with handguns may prove harmful to safety efforts, inflicting such standards would provide instructors and students equally with enhanced protection and overall security. Imagine being in the family's shoes when hearing through media reports that their child was killed in a school shooting. If teachers had the option of being equipped with the handguns, then that child (and the rest in the classroom) would have survived. How many more times are we going to learn about a deranged gunman walking into a school loaded and ready to kill? How many more innocent children need to die before we wake up and give our teachers the prospect to fight back? The only resolution is to grant our teachers a fighting chance. No shooter is going to target a school that can protect itself and fight back. Every second counts in a school shooting. Calling 911 and anticipating for police to arrive isn't good enough. Spartanburg County South Carolina Sheriff Chuck Wright says, "Our form of justice is not making it. Carry a concealed weapon. That'll fix it" (Miller, Fox News). Then there was Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. who lately created a nationwide uproar for advising citizens to master how to manage firearms so they can protect themselves, because he says, "simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option" (Handelman Fox 6 Wisconsin). • 38. Legal Effects Of Gun Shootings As more states adopt the right to carry firearms laws, firearm deaths have been reduced. This is an issue in the U.S with 29 major mass shootings with the last 10 years. The issue at hand is that in mass shootings the shooter is able to keep firing until a police officer arrives on the scene and stops the shooter. By this point the shooter will have killed or injured quite a bit of people before the officers could act. This is an important statement because it would lessen the amount of casualties/injuries. With there being more and more shootings occurring in the United States the need for people to defend themselves needs to increase. In many situations if there had been an individual with a concealed weapons permit, the mass shootings would have less casualties. With there being another person with a firearm except the perpetrator and the police officer it would reduce the chance of the perpetrator killing more people. Mass shootings in the United States would be minimized by potential victims being armed. The per–capita gun homicide rate had fallen by nearly half since mid to late 1990s to 2013.
