1. The document discusses the components and advantages of a database management system. It describes the main components as the database itself, the database administrator, database users, and database programs.
2. The database administrator is responsible for defining the database structure and content, storage structure, data access strategy, and more. Database users interact with the system to enter and retrieve data.
3. Advantages of a database management system include centralized data storage and access, handling queries, arranging data, maintaining data integrity and security, and providing access to multiple users.

2. DATA BASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM:
• Introduction:
v A Database is a collection of related information stored so that it is available to
many users for different purposes. The content of a database is obtained by
combining data from all the different sources in an organisation so that the data is
available to all users and redundant data can be eliminated or at least minimised.
v MEDLINE is a well-known database service providing medical information for
doctors. The management of database system is done by means of a general
purpose software package, called a database management system.
3. DATA BASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM:
• Most database management systems have the following facilities/capabilities:
q Creation of a file, addition to data, deflection of data, modification of data;
q creation and deletion of entire files.
q Retrieving data collectively, or selectively.
q The data stored can be sorted or indexed at the user’s discretion and direction.
q Various reports can be produced from the system. These may be either standardised
reports or specifically generated according to specific user definition.
4. COMPONENTS OF DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM:
• Database management system can be divided into following components:
v Database
v Database Administrator (DBA).
v Database Users
v Database programe
5. COMPONENTS OF DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM:
vDatabase:
q A Database is a collection of related information stored so that it is available to many
users for different purposes.
q The content of a database is obtained by combining data from all the different
sources in an organisation so that the data is available to all users and redundant data
can be eliminated or at least minimised.
6. COMPONENTS OF DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM:
vDatabase Administrator:
q He or She is responsible for the overall control of the database management system.
q The DBA is responsible for the following functions:
To define the content of the database.
§ To specify the storage structure.
§ To decide the data access strategy.
§ To provide validation procedures.
§ To provide authorisation checks.
§ To liaise with the users.
§ To provide the method for data backup, retrieval and recovery To monitor the overall performance of
the system.
7. vDatabase Users:
q The people who use the database system, by entering the data and retrieving the
information are called the users. The users are the major components of a DBMS can
include:
§ Application programmers, who are computer professionals who interact with the
system through DML calls, which are embedded in a programme written in a host
language (for example, Cobal, Pascal and C). these programmes are commonly
referred to as application programmes.
§ Specialised Users interact with the system without writing programmes Instead, they
form their requests in database query language.
COMPONENTS OF DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM:
8. § Sophisticated Users write specialisation database applications. Among these
applications are computer aided design systems, knowledge base and modeling
systems. Amity Directorate of Distance & Online Education Information Technology
for Managers 19.
§ Naïve Users are unsophisticated users who interact with the system by invoking one
of the permanent application programmes that have been written previously.
COMPONENTS OF DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM:
9. vDatabase Programs:
q The set of instructions given to the database system to perform the arithmetic and
logical operations on data are also the importantcomponents of a DBMS. These sets
of instructions are called Programmes. These instructions are given to interact among
the different elements of the database. These instructions generally comprise a set of
rules and relationships.
COMPONENTS OF DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM:
10. v ADVANTAGES OF DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM:
q Provide the way for storage of data and information.
q Provide centralised control and an easy access to the data.
q Provide the way for tackling simple and complex queries on a database.
q Arrange the data in various ways.
q Maintain non-redundancy of data.
q Maintain the integrity to ensure that the data is correct.
q Maintain security and privacy of data.
q Provide access to multiple users.
q Provide an integrated and shared system.
q Provide the method for data independence
11. v DISADVANTAGES OF DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM:
q Costly due to requirements of expensive hardware and higher operating costs.
q Greater complexity of backup and recovery in multiuser environments.
q High risk of data loss, due to centralisation of the database.
