1. Create a PowerPoint document
based on the case in Q1, showing
the following points:
Construct a model that describes the real challenge in this
case.
Identify possible solutions to the modeled problem and
evaluate the solutions.
Compare, choose, and recommend a potential solution to the
problem.
Define the problem (i.e., a decision situation that may deal
with some difficulty or with an opportunity).
2. Construct a model that describes the
real challenge in this case.
A real challenge is to make Lelystad Airport attractive to airlines to choose for. But
there are some challenges to make Schiphol-Lelystad a successful twin-airport, the
main challenges are:
Airlines and travellers will need to be seduced to use Lelystad airport. The 2014
business case for the airport states that an attractive range of facilities, services,
competitive rates and financial incentives will be required.
3. Construct a model that describes the
real challenge in this case.(Cont.)
The ‘Covenant Development Lelystad Airport’ stipulates that the parties
pursue a sustainable and innovative development of Lelystad Airport.
However, the location is not free of conflicting interests; aviation growth
versus an expanding windfarm. In this particular case a choice must be
made: a compromise in not possible, else the aircraft are soon to ‘slalom’
between the windmills.
High priority should be given to develop ATC and development of airside
procedures which have to be implemented at Lelystad Airport. While the
pre-studies for the route design were concluded in 2014 a lot of work still
needs to be done before they can be finalized.
4. Identify possible solutions to the modeled
problem and evaluate the solutions.
Schipol is trying to increase the revenue stream by optimizing customer
experience while reducing costs-per-baggage. Achieving this goal has a
deep impact on Schipol’s revenue stream for two reasons:
1-Schipol is an international transit hub – flight transfers are more likely to
take place at Schipol if its efficiency and customer-experience increase.
2-Schipol serves a large user basin – increasing direct customer experience
increases traffic of people.
5. Compare, choose, and recommend a
potential solution to the problem.
The first solution:
Intensifying security and auditing procedures and developing the
system level
The second solution:
Attracting a larger number of highly qualified and experienced employees
All of them are effective solutions in addition to raising the level of
customer service
6. Define the problem (i.e., a decision
situation that may deal with some difficulty
or with an opportunity).
1-Placing a wrong tag on the baggage or the tag being unreadable or
making changes to the schedule will all lead to the loss of baggage.
Solution: Intensifying security and auditing procedures and developing the
system level
2-Lack of staff and lack of sufficient competence to match the number of
people who come to the airport
Solution:
Attracting a larger number of highly qualified and experienced employees
7. Define the problem (i.e., a decision
situation that may deal with some difficulty
or with an opportunity). (Cont.)
SCHIPHOL encountered many problems due to a lack of staff at security
checkpoints and baggage handling and the airport could not handle the
summer crowds. Amsterdam Airport later announced several measures to
try to reduce crowds, which led to airlines having to cancel many flights or
transfer them to regional airports.
