2. • Sacagawea was a Shoshone Native American
who was born around 1788 and lived until
1812. She was the daughter of the Shoshone
chief and was born in Lemhi County, Idaho.
3. • She was captured by an enemy tribe when she was
12yrs old and sold to a French-Canadian trapper. In
1804 she joined the Lewis and Clark expedition to
explore the West and acted as a guide and
interpreter.
4. • The Lewis and Clark Expedition, also called the
Corp of Discovery, set out from St.Louis in
1804 and traveled throughout the Western
parts of North America, crossing the
Continental Divide to reach the Pacific coast.
5. • The expedition was made to explore and survey the land west
of the Mississippi that had been purchased from France.
Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to find a water route
across North America to the Pacific ocean. They hired
Sacagawea to help them navigate through the rough west and
interpret with Native American Indians.
