The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986 when a sudden power surge during a simulated power outage caused the reactor core to overheat and explode, releasing radioactive materials into the atmosphere estimated to be 500 times greater than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The disaster directly caused 31 deaths and widespread radioactive contamination. In contrast, elephant populations in Africa have declined drastically from an estimated 26 million in 1800 due to years of poaching and habitat destruction, with around 20,000 elephants now killed annually for their ivory compared to fewer births.
