Capilano Human Resources Management Association (Capilano BC HRMA) is a newly formed,
student-driven organization that serves the needs of business students in Capilano College
by providing on and off campus opportunities for networking and professional development
within the field of human resources.
On Wednesday, October 31, 2007, Capilano HRMA
celebrated its official launch with keynote speaker
Simon Cumming, director of member relations for BC
HRMA. The event also welcomed a great number of
business students and special guests including
Elizabeth Bonner, BC HRMA member relations
manager, Coastal Vancouver; Catherine Vertesi, vice-
president education, management and international
programs, Capilano College; Shoshana Somerville,
supervisor / employability coach, Capilano College;
Kathryn Taft, HR instructor, Capilano College; and the
HR department of Capilano College including Rachel
Zuckermann, manager, human resources and Barbara
Ottley, human resources advisor.
This was an incredible experience for all business students as the atmosphere of the event
was full of energy and enthusiasm. After Cumming’s engaging presentation many students
looked at a career in HR career with a different perspective. Throughout the presentation
and the discussions students learned about BC HRMA, the offerings for its members and the
benefits for student members. In addition, business students obtained information about the
Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation and HR career opportunities.
Business student Samantha Sai won a free half-day professional development workshop
sponsored by BC HRMA. After the presentation students had the opportunity to network with
guests, ask questions about HR, and to share their own experiences.
