2. A Complete Guide to Fire-Rated Doors
A fire-rated door is a door engineered to stop flames
and smokes from spreading out to enable safe
egress is known as “passive fire protection systems”.
This type of door is made of glass sections, gypsum
(as an endothermic fill), steel, timber, vermiculite-
boards and aluminium. It includes hardware, such as
automatic closing devices/objects, ball bearing
hinges, positive latching mechanism, smoke seals
and gas seals. The door works on the principle of
compartmentalisation. In other words, it seals off the
affected area completely to ensure no spread of fire
or smoke to other unaffected zone of the building.
3. Looking For Fire-Rated Door
The two main characteristics of
fire-rated door are integrity and
insulation. Integrity refers to the
door’s ability of a separating
element to remain solid, thereby
stopping flame or smoke from
rolling out. It simply means how a
door resists to collapse in an
event fire. Another characteristic
is insulation, which relates to the
door’s ability to resist heat
conduction from the fireside to
the non-fire side. Consequently,
ensures no ignition of
combustible material available on
the non-fire-side.
