Lesson number: 6 (40 minutes) Lesson title: Match box car racing
ELABORATE  To challenge and extend students’ understanding in a new context or make connections to additional concepts through a student-planned investigation.
 To support students to plan and conduct an investigation.
Inspiration taken from the Primary Connections unit planner

Students will:
1. Test length travelled by matchbox cars
with various sizes using a ramp on different
surfaces
2. Predict then measure and record the
distance their car travels on each surface.
3. Learn meaning of variables
(Dependent/independent/controlled) hence
write it as part of their report on the
experiment
4. Continue filling KWL chart
Match box car racing:
- Matchbox Cars (One per each group)
- Wooden planks
- Carpet strip
-Plastic strip
- Sandpaper strip
- Yardstick
- Set of books (same height for each group)
- Investigation sheet (Appendix 6.2) (Primary
connection, 2009)
- spreadsheet
KWL chart (Appendix 1.1)
*Prior to the experiments, teacher will go through each
section of the investigation sheet in order to clarify the
meaning of variables and the expectation from the students.
Consequently, instructions for the procedure of the
experiment will be explained to the students.
Matchbox car racing experiment-
-Students will form in same group as the previous lesson.
Each group will be then given role badges including director,
manager and speaker. Each group is expected to complete
the experiment and answer the questions in the given
activity sheet and spread sheet to record the results (Group
activity)
KWL chart- Each group will continue filling in their KWL chart
writing what they have learnt today and what they further
wish to find out. (group activity)
Matchbox car experiment :
Assessed using a 4‐point scale to indicate the extent
to which the student has met the four required
elements in the report. (Continuous)
(Appendix 6.3)
Spreadsheet:
Students’ ability to correctly record their
experiments on the spreadsheet with correct labels
and numbers
KWL chart
Forms part on on-going formative and summative
assessment.
