ong known as a leader in intercollegiate athletics, the Lone Star Conference (LSC) is an
innovative athletics conference that aims to provide a superior competitive experience
for member institutions and to allow for comprehensive development of student-athletes
through academic services and life skills programming. The LSC continues to build upon
its proud history while intending to be recognized as the premier NCAA Division II conference in
the nation.
The league’s mission is to foster student participation and success among member institutions
in NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of each institution’s total educational
program. The LSC shall pursue student-athlete development with highest regard to the principles
of academic excellence, graduation success, sportsmanship, ethical conduct, resourcefulness,
community service, gender equity, and diversity.
The LSC - founded on April 25, 1931 - has developed from a five-team conference of Texas-based
schools to an 11-member league that spans three states (Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico).
The conference membership recently expanded by adding The University of Texas of the Permian
Basin and Western New Mexico University in July 2016. Oklahoma Panhandle State University
becomes an affiliate member in football and Lubbock Christian University joins the league as an
affiliate member in indoor and outdoor track and field on that same date.
The league continues to assist its member institutions in the maintenance of intercollegiate
athletic programs that are compatible with the highest standards of education and competitive
sports.
Throughout the league’s 85-year history, various institutions have competed under the LSC
banner. Today, only Texas A&M University-Commerce (then East Texas State) remains from
the original group that was formed in 1931 when North Texas State, Southwest Texas State,
Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin withdrew from the old Texas Intercollegiate Athletic
Association.
The membership alignment has changed over the years, with current members added from
1954 to 2016. Texas A&M-Kingsville (formerly Texas A&I) joined in 1954, and Angelo State in 1968.
Conference membership remained within the Texas borders until 1984 when Eastern New
Mexico was admitted. Since then, the LSC has included members from Arkansas and Oklahoma.
Cameron (1988, 1996) was added near the outset of an expansion phase, while Texas Woman’s
(1989) and previous members West Texas A&M (1986, 1993) and Tarleton State (1968, 1994)
joined the league soon after.
Midwestern State was admitted early in 1995, while Incarnate Word joined the league in 2010.
Harding reconnected with the league as an affiliate member in track and field from 2013-15, and
McMurry was an affiliate member in indoor and outdoor track and field, and football in 2014.
Past members of the LSC include Trinity, Houston, Lamar, Howard Payne, Sul Ross State,
McMurry, Harding, Ouachita Baptist, Central Oklahoma, East Central (Okla.), Northeastern State
(Okla.), Southeastern Oklahoma, Southwestern Oklahoma, Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word.
While the LSC has maintained a long-standing tradition of competitive athletic programs
for its members, many teams and individuals have gone on to distinguish themselves on the
national stage. Entering 2016-17, LSC member institutions have collected 75 NCAA team national
championships since the league joined the Division II membership in 1982.
The LSC conducts conference championships in 17 sports (eight men and nine women). Men’s
championships include football, cross country, basketball, baseball, indoor track and field, outdoor
track and field, golf and tennis. Women’s titles are determined in volleyball, soccer, cross country,
basketball, softball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and golf.
The conference office is located in Richardson, Texas, a northern suburb of Dallas. Jay Poerner
serves as Commissioner, with assistance from Melanie Robotham (Media Relations), Danielle
Anderson (Compliance) and Cheryl Scott (Business).

exas A&M-Commerce was picked to repeat as the Lone Star
Conference football champions according to the 2016 LSC
preseason poll announced in late July.
The league’s preseason poll reflects the opinions of LSC head
coaches and sports information directors, plus various media
representatives from throughout the region.
A&M-C, who claimed its second straight LSC title with a perfect
6-0 league record last season, earned first place votes on 19 of the
28 ballots to total 269 points. The Lions were 8-4 in 2015 including
a NCAA Division II playoff appearance.
Midwestern State, which captured the 2015 LSC Playoffs
Championship, received eight first-place nods to finish second with
254 points following a 10-2 campaign last season.
Angelo State ranked third with 211 points in front of West Texas
A&M in fourth (182) and Eastern New Mexico fifth (181). Texas
A&M-Kingsville (141), Tarleton State (121), Oklahoma Panhandle
State (66), Western New Mexico (66) and UT Permian Basin (49
and one first-place vote) rounded out the poll.
The season kicks off September 1 and the LSC has 10 teams set
to compete in 2016. Each team will play nine conference games
to determine the LSC Champion.
Three LSC teams were included in postseason play last season,
with MSU and A&M-C advancing to the NCAA Division II playoffs,
and ENMU playing in the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl.
2016 Composite Schedule
LSC Football preseason honors announced
Texas A&M-Commerce’s Richard Cooper and West Texas A&M’s
Hunter Streuling were named Lone Star Conference Football
Preseason Players of the Year for the 2016 season league officials
announced in late July.
A&M-C’s Cooper was tabbed Offensive Player of the Year, while
WT’s Streuling claimed the Defensive Player of the Year award.
The league’s preseason awards were selected by a vote of LSC
head coaches and sports information directors, plus various media
representatives from throughout the region.
Cooper, a 5-9, 185-pound senior running back from Angleton,
Texas, led the Lions with 1,331 rushing yards and 110.9 yards per
game last season. He was the first Lion running back to surpass
the 1,000-yard mark in a single-season since 2005. Cooper opened
the 2015 season with six straight 100-yard rushing games to set a
new school record and finished the season with nine games over
100-yards. The reigning LSC Offensive Back of the Year had a
season-best 158 yards on 28 carries at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
With 15 votes, Cooper was the top choice in front of Eastern
New Mexico’s Kamal Cass (10 votes) and three others who each
received one vote.
Streuling, a 6-0, 168-pound junior defensive back from Austin,
Texas, earned first team All-LSC honors after leading WT with 89
tackles including 46 solo stops. He recorded three interceptions,
which tied for the LSC and team best, along with three pass
breakups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble starting
all 10 games.
Streuling received seven votes to edge Angelo State’s Fred
Lawrence (six votes) along with eight others receiving votes.

ENMU falls to Arkansas Tech in H.O.T.
Bowl
Eastern New Mexico was defeated by Arkansas Tech 51-
35 in the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl.
The Greyhounds season ends after a 6-6 campaign,
while the Wonder Boys improved to 9-3.
Jeremy Buurma was awarded with the H.O.T. Bowl
MVP award for the Hounds with his season-high 255
passing yards and season-high three passing touchdowns. Trailing late, ENMU
went to the air more than normal, tossing the ball a season-high 24 times.
The senior quarterback ended his collegiate career at Eastern on a high note,
completing 13 of those 24 passes.
Buurma’s main target on the night was Aaron Johnson who caught six passes
for two touchdowns, both matching his career-highs. His 146 receiving yards
set a new career-high and marked the wide out as the game’s leading receiver.
Adrian Horton, another senior playing in his last contest as a Greyhound, had
a good outing with four receptions for 60 yards and one touchdown.
Kamal Cass once again showed that the Greyhounds have a bright future,
with the sophomore back tallying 171 yards on 35 carries. Cass scored two
touchdowns on the ground and kept ENMU in the ball game with a tremendous
second half effort.
Cass’ performance placed him second all-time for single season rushing
yards at Eastern, recording 1,514 yards on the season. First place is held by
E’Lon Spight who ran for 1611 yards last season.
Joshua (Wade) Bounds, the senior defensive end for the Hounds, recorded
seven total tackles and one sack for a loss of five yards, one of ENMU’s four
sacks on the night. Denzel Philip led Eastern with three sacks, totaling a loss of
17 yards.
Two touchdowns and a safety found ENMU down early, falling behind 16-0
just under five minutes into the matchup. A two-yard touchdown run by Cass
capped off a three minute drive by the Hounds to cut into the Wonderboys lead,
but Eastern wouldn’t catch a break as Arkansas Tech came back like lightning,
scoring in just over one minute to increase their lead to 16 again, 23-7.
Four minutes into the second quarter Buurma connected with Johnson on
a 27 yard pass to put another six on the board for the Hounds. After the extra
point by Timothy Callian, ENMU trailed 23-14 with the lead in reach. Yet a
Wonderboys would answer back, a reoccurring theme in the high scoring
shootout, pushing their lead back to 16 once again.
After more back and forth scoring, two scores by ENMU cut ATU’s lead to
only two points at 37-35. Alas, the Wonderboys weren’t done scoring and
would go on to put two more scores on the board before Eastern would see the
red zone again.
With slightly over nine minutes remaining in the fourth period, Buurma led
the Greyhounds down the field until, at the 12 yard line, they ran into a stout
Wonderboy’s defense that buckled down to prevent Eastern from getting the
first down on four tries, effectively ending the game.
