4. Heb 4:2-6 (NLT)
Heb 4:2-6 NLT For this good news--that God has
prepared this rest--has been announced to us just
as it was to them. But it did them no good because
they didn't share the faith of those who listened to
God. 3 For only we who believe can enter His
rest. As for the others, God said, "In My anger I
took an oath: 'They will never enter My place of
rest,'" even though this rest has been ready since
He made the world.
5. Heb 4:2-6 (NLT)
4 We know it is ready because of the place in
the Scriptures where it mentions the seventh
day: "On the seventh day God rested from all
His work." 5 But in the other passage God
said, "They will never enter My place of rest."
6 So God's rest is there for people to enter, but
those who first heard this good news failed to
enter because they disobeyed God.
8. Heb 4:9-11 (NLT)
So there is a special rest still waiting for the
people of God. 10 For all who have entered
into God's rest have rested from their labours,
just as God did after creating the world. 11 So
let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we
disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will
fall.
We all now how important it is to rest both for our bodies and our minds. But rest is even more important as a spiritual concept.
Rest from works: We rest from trying to earn God’s favour through doing good. We know that salvation is by faith alone. We receive God’s favour and become part of His household through believing in the completed work of Christ.
Work from rest: But rest is not a passive thing it is from this faith that we can do good. We do good not to earn salvation but because we have received it, not as n payment plan (get saved first and pay later) but because we have been set free to be able to do good. We don’t merely have a responsibility to do good we are now able to respond.
In Ex 17:7 God instructed Moses to strike the rock while in Num 20 Moses was to speak to the rock. Because Moses struck the rock he was not allowed to enter the rest of the promised land. Why?
In Exodus 3 we read Exo 3:13-16 NLT But Moses protested, "If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, 'The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,' they will ask me, 'What is His name?' Then what should I tell them?" 14 God replied to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you." 15 God also said to Moses, "Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors--the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob--has sent me to you. This is My eternal name, My name to remember for all generations. 16 "Now go and call together all the elders of Israel. Tell them, 'The LORD, the God of your ancestors--the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob--has appeared to me. He told me, "I have been watching closely, and I see how the Egyptians are treating you.
Moses was called to be God’s voice to the people to bring I am to the people. I am who I am is the beginning of all things, everything finds it’s definition in relation to I am. If I have to tell you who I am I have to include others in my definition. I am Louis Kotze son of … etc. God defines Himself by no other He is the definition. By extension Moses was now defined by I am, he was now the servant, the voice of I am.
But in Exodus 4 Moses asks God for backup, because He didn’t think anybody would believe Him, so God asked what is in your hand. The rod of Moses became very powerful but it was always like the other miraculous signs he could perform, only supposed to be the backup for Moses’ voice. Exo 4:10-12 NLT But Moses pleaded with the LORD, "O Lord, I'm not very good with words. I never have been, and I'm not now, even though You have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangled." 11 Then the LORD asked Moses, "Who makes a person's mouth? Who decides whether people speak or do not speak, hear or do not hear, see or do not see? Is it not I, the LORD? 12 Now go! I will be with you as you speak, and I will instruct you in what to say."
True spiritual authority comes from being defined by I am. You and I have authority because we are extensions of the authority of I am. Our identity is defined by Him. Even more defining than being a follower of Jesus or a disciple is that you are a child of God. We carry I am in different ways but like Moses it is the voice of I am that we are to reveal to others. Moses came to rely on the backup plan too much. He became to used to overpowering situations. The difference between striking rocks and speaking to rocks is that in striking we dominate and in a sense force while in speaking we influence which requires relationship. When your children is young you use the rod more often to backup your words but as they mature you mainly use words only.
Moses faced a critical time that had great challenge. We could have excused him because it was the end of the road or because he just lost Miriam or because of the great challenge of a thirsty people but God saw that Moses had lost his faith. He no longer believed in the voice of God in Him but rather trusted in the strength of his rod. Moses acted out of frustration, he was stressed, he did not work from rest. Even after having spent time with God and receiving clear instructions. God needed His people to enter the promised land through faith because it was only by believing in the power of His voice they would inherit the land. They shouted to conquer Jericho.
We each carry God’s I am with us we are because He is I am. We have to step up into the next level of Godly authority to influence this world. But this only comes by resting in Him and working from that place of Rest.
We work from rest by Working from
Communion – We work from having our identity secured in Him.
Community – We are not alone but find our place in the community of faith. We cannot do it all but recognize that we form part of a team wherein each is free to be whom God has made them to be.
Commission – I am sent by God along with others to do only what He has called me to do. I am free and able to respond to his call.
In 2015 I believe God wants to take us to the next level of effectivity. That will only come about if we step up to enter the rest and operate not from striving but from faith in what He has done and who He has made us. Are you stressed and struggling then can I encourage you to check the three C’s. Are you secure in your relationship or are you needing to rest from works? Are you vitally connected to community, do you enjoy the covering, encouraging, and sharpening of community? Do you have a clear sense of the commission, are you doing what God has called you to do, or are you trying to be someone else?
