  • This is not a sermon on church attendance. If you've submitted to the first command, then there's no need for a sermon on church attendance.
  • Let me suggest that the fourth command is more applicable to us than we've imagined.Everyone knows (or do we?) that we don't need to keep the fourth command.
  • In light of Jesus' words, we need to be careful about telling people not to obey any command of God.
  • Not the first mention of the Sabbath in scripture.
  • This was six weeks before the ten commands were given. Just after the exodus from Egypt.Heb. shabat does not mean "seventh". It means "rest".Not necessarily the first occurrence of a Sabbath observance.Scholars suggest that there was no Sabbath observance until Moses. That is not necessarily so.A look at Exodus 16:28 suggests that the Sabbath command predated the giving of the Law at Sinai.Exodus 16:28 NIV Then the LORD said to Moses, "How long will you refuse to keep my commands and my instructions?
  • Jesus emphasized the importance of the Sabbath. It is true that the Bible never says that God commanded the patriarchs to observe the Sabbath. But it is also true that the Bible never gives any example where God forbade murder, adultery, lying, theft, etc. Yet they obviously knew these things were wrong.I suggest that Exo 16 & 20 re-introduce Israel to a command they hadn't observed for centuries: the command to rest. Why had they not observed it? Because slaves never get a day off & they've been slaves for centuries.I believe that God established the Sabbath principle before Exo 16 & 20.
  • First, a command to labor for six days.Work is not a curse. Man was given a job in the garden before he sinned.Genesis 2:15 NIV The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.Genesis 2:15 NBLH El SEÑOR Dios tomó al hombre y lo puso en el huerto del Edén para que lo cultivara y lo cuidara. The fourth command suggests that the man who doesn't work isn't fit to worship.
  • Second, a command to specifically observe the seventh day as a holy day.Exodus 20:8 NIV "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
  • It is a day of rest.Exo 20:9-10 NIV Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. It is a gift from God: not earned, but given as a result of grace.Exo 16:29 NIV Bear in mind that the LORD has given you the Sabbath; that is why on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Everyone is to stay where he is on the seventh day; no one is to go out."Exodus 16:29 NBLH "Miren que el SEÑOR les ha dado el día de reposo. God divided day into day/night cycle to allow for rest. God gave the seventh day for rest.Pharisees took the gift of Sabbath rest and made it into a burden by legislating rules for its observance.
  • 2. It is a day of remembrance. It is a day on which the Jews remember what God did for them.Deu 5:15 NIV Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.
  • 3. It is a day of revelation.Exo 31:12-17 NIV Then the LORD said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites, 'You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy. "'Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it must be put to death; whoever does any work on that day must be cut off from his people. For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day must be put to death. The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he abstained from work and rested.'"Exodus 31:12-17 NBLH El SEÑOR habló a Moisés y le dijo: (13) "Habla, pues, tú a los Israelitas y diles: 'De cierto guardarán Mis días de reposo, porque esto es una señal entre Yo y ustedes por todas sus generaciones, a fin de que sepan que Yo soy el SEÑOR que los santifico.
What if we stoned them?We tend to think that the Sabbath law belongs with the ceremonial legislation of sacrifices and offerings. That is doubtful, since God put it here & not there.God's finger wrote the command on stone. That suggests permanence.
  • The Sabbath was established by God's example. Why did God rest? Not because he was tired.God's rest did not mean he stopped the work of sustaining the universe. If he had, the universe would have flown apart.Rather, God set us an example - that one day in seven is to be set aside for rest.Similarly, why was Jesus baptized? Not because he had sins needing forgiveness, but as an example of obedience to the Father. The Sabbath was blessed by God.Of all other created days, God said: "It is good“; Only of the Sabbath did the Bible say: "God blessed it".Thus, the principle that rest is blessed. The Bible never says the seventh creative day ended; Of six creative days, the Bible says: "there was evening and morning ...". The Bible doesn't say that of the seventh.
(17) Pero Jesús les respondió: "Hasta ahora Mi Padre trabaja, y Yo también trabajo."Jesus' argument was that God is working on his Sabbath. If God can do it, then Jesus can do it. Jesus was not talking about the Seventh day of the week; he was talking about God's Sabbath that began in Gen 2.
  • The writer of Hebrews argues that God's rest continues & Christians live to enter God's rest.
  • The writer of Hebrews argues that God's rest continues & Christians live to enter God's rest.
  • I'm not saying we should come to church on Saturday, nor that we should make Saturday holy. Rather, I'm saying that when we threw out the Sabbath, we also threw out the principle for which it stood. The early Christians did not meet on the seventh day - for good reason: Jesus was in the grave on the seventh day.Rather, they met on the first day - the day Jesus came out of the grave triumphant. They changed the practice, but not the principle. The Bible calls the first day of the week the "Lord's Day". We treat it more like it is our day than his.We need to rethink our attitudes about the Lord's Day.
  • We need a time for re-identification.We need a reminder to ourselves and others that we have a unique relationship with God.Such a reminder is found in the fact that we spend the day differently than they do.The Lord's Day is a reminder of who we are and whose we are.
  • 2. We need a time of re-dedication.The Lord's Day is devoted to a remembrance of what God has done.People often say: "Sunday is my only day to ... (rest, go to the mountains, go to the river, work around the house, go to sporting events, etc.). Is it really my day, or is it the Lord's?It's a shame that one hour is about all we can stand of the Lord on his day. The Bible doesn't call it the "Lord's morning" or the "Lord's hour". It calls it the "Lord's Day".The entire day needs to be devoted to remembering what he has done for us and re-dedicating ourselves to him.
  • 3. We need time for recreation. It can be holy to do things that recharge us on the Lord's Day. There is nothing wrong with fellowship, meals, working in the yard, or recreation. All these things can be designed to refocus our spiritual and physical energies.David Davenport made a speech one time suggesting that we should spend a day a week on supply, and not spend all our time on demand. We ought to be refreshed on Monday because we spent Sunday honoring the Lord.
  • Prayer: Help us honor you on your day. Remembrance, re-dedication, recreation, recharge energies. Cope with the struggles of the past week & the trials of the week ahead. Help us to focus on you.Invitation: Restlessness is a spiritual problem. Its roots are in sin. The remedy for restlessness is Jesus, who promises us rest.

    1. 1. Blessed<br />Be Rest<br />Exodus 20:8-11<br />
    2. 2. Exodus 20:8-11 NIV <br />Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. <br />
    3. 3. Exodus 20:8-11 NIV <br />For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.<br />
    4. 4. Matthew 5:17-20 NIV <br />Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.<br />
    5. 5. Matthew 5:17-20 NIV <br />Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.<br />
    6. 6. Matthew 5:17-20 NIV <br />For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.<br />
    7. 7. Origins of the Sabbath<br />
    8. 8. Exodus 16:4-5 NIV <br />Then the LORD said to Moses, "I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions. On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days."<br />
    9. 9. Exodus 16:21-30 NIV <br />Each morning everyone gathered as much as he needed, and when the sun grew hot, it melted away. On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much--two omers for each person--and the leaders of the community came and reported this to Moses. He said to them, "This is what the LORD commanded: 'Tomorrow is to be a day of rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD. <br />
    10. 10. Exodus 16:21-30 NIV <br />So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning.'" So they saved it until morning, as Moses commanded, and it did not stink or get maggots in it. "Eat it today," Moses said, "because today is a Sabbath to the LORD. You will not find any of it on the ground today. <br />
    11. 11. Exodus 16:21-30 NIV <br />Six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will not be any." Nevertheless, some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather it, but they found none. Then the LORD said to Moses, "How long will you refuse to keep my commands and my instructions? <br />
    12. 12. Exodus 16:21-30 NIV <br />Bear in mind that the LORD has given you the Sabbath; that is why on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Everyone is to stay where he is on the seventh day; no one is to go out." So the people rested on the seventh day.<br />
    13. 13. Mark 2:27-28 NIV<br />Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."<br />
    14. 14. Two Parts to the Command<br />
    15. 15.
    16. 16.
    17. 17. 3 R’s of the Sabbath<br />
    18. 18. 3 R’s of the Sabbath<br />
    19. 19. 3 R’s of the Sabbath<br />
    20. 20. Exodus 35:1-3 NIV<br />Moses assembled the whole Israelite community and said to them, "These are the things the LORD has commanded you to do: For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death. Do not light a fire in any of your dwellings on the Sabbath day."<br />
    21. 21. The First Sabbath<br />
    22. 22. Genesis 2:2-3 NIV<br />By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.<br />
    23. 23. John 5:16-17 NIV<br />So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him. Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working."<br />
    24. 24. Hebrews 4:1-11 NIV<br />Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.<br />
    25. 25. Hebrews 4:1-11 NIV<br />Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, "So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'" And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world. For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: "And on the seventh day God rested from all his work." <br />
    26. 26. Hebrews 4:1-11 NIV<br />And again in the passage above he says, "They shall never enter my rest." It still remains that some will enter that rest, and those who formerly had the gospel preached to them did not go in, because of their disobedience. <br />
    27. 27. Hebrews 4:1-11 NIV<br />Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts." For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. <br />
    28. 28. Hebrews 4:1-11 NIV<br />There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.<br />

    32. 32. Three Suggestions About Holy Days<br />
    33. 33. Wrapping Up<br />
    34. 34. Matthew 11:28-30 NIV<br />"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."<br />
