Analysis of the film sleepy hollow
1. In our next lesson we were given the task of producing a short analysis of how a film uses Mise-En-Scene. I decided to analyse the film Sleepy Hollow. To begin with I looked at the setting of the film. The film is based on short story: the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The book was set in a secluded glen named Sleepy Hollow in the state of New York. Even though the film was set in England, the location was well placed. Sleepy Hollow was filmed near Buckinghamshire and on the Hambleden estate. This was a well-chosen decision, as this estate is a village and it is very remote as well. The entire village is surrounded by trees as well. The reason why this was a very good location was that it was very barren and univiting. This works into the tone of the film well, as it raises the atmosphere and creates more suspense.
The props in this film are very age specific which helps to fit in with when this film is supposed to be set. This film was set at the end of the nineteenth century, where criminal justice still had to be fully developed. Ichapod Crane is the main character in this film and he has many instruments which were new at the time and they were all props. The effect of this is, that it symbolises a new a change in society. Another very obvious prop that is used is the axe that the Hessian uses. The effect of this is that it instantly shows the target audience, who the villain is and that the audience should be scared of him.

Again the costumes of this film are very specific to the age in which it is supposed to be set. For example the costume of Johnny Depp is very elegant, but quite smart as well. This tells the audience that he is the good character, because even though he is wearing dark colour, which connotes with darkness, his costume is very smart and refined. This can be compared to the costume which the Hessian wears. The Hessian's costume is black as well, but instead of it being fabric materials. It is armour plating. This tells the audience that he is the villain, because his costume is threatening and he needs to rely on his armour and brawn to protect him. This contrasts with Ichapod Crane, as he has a smart costume meaning that he relies on his smart mind to look after himself.
Facial expressions are used very well in this film, as this photo immediately tells the audience about the hatred and anger which the Hessian expresses. This particular facial expression adds a lot of atmosphere to the film and it is very important when it comes to closeups.
The lighting in this film is very dark, as it is a horror film. The way lighting uses is very effective, as it raises the atmosphere and creates tension.
