The personal study is a Year 13 project where students independently investigate a self-chosen topic through photographic work and a supporting essay. For their first task, students must decide on a topic for their personal study, which can initially be broad. They are to create a mood board and spider diagram presenting their topic ideas. The personal study aims to show students' most advanced technical and conceptual work so far and will be completed through self-directed research with teacher support. Students must select an accessible topic that allows for an in-depth investigation and can be explored through their own photographic series with reference to supporting artists.
2. You are going to choose your own topic
Year 13 is a personal investigation
into a theme, issue, idea or
photographic problem that you are
interested in. It is a further unit of
practical, visual photographic work
this time supported by an
essay(approximately 1-3000 words).
The study is entirely self generated,
though you will be asked to
complete visual and written tasks to
deadlines, to support the progress
of work.
3. Your first task is to decide what
you want your topic to be. It
can be fairly broad to begin
with. You should create a nicely
presented visual mood board
and a spider diagram.
Look at the images and suggestions on the
following slides for inspiration……
* Whilst we want you to be
really imaginative please also be
aware of, and consider, the
current situation and the
context in which you are starting
your project when choosing a
topic.
4. Remember, we are all getting used to
working in very different times, and it
is too early for us to tell as teachers
and forecast the next few months of
working.
One thing is for sure, that you need to
start thinking about your Year 13
Personal Study now, and this is going
to continue when we are back at
school in September, and is your major
project for the academic year.
It is therefore really important that you
carefully think about an area of study
that is easily accessible, and that you
can complete in the local environment,
as trips into London and Gallery visits
may not be on the agenda for a long
time.
10. The personal study should provide evidence of your most advanced work so far,
both technically and conceptually.
You will be learning to work in a completely self directed way, though will continue
with support through tutorials, workshops and class discussions.
Be imaginative, original and creative with the choice of topic. Select a subject that
you can research and will be possible to produce an extended investigation into.
Think where you may find research material and artists supporting it.
You will need to link the topic to artists/photographers/film makers.
You will be producing your own creative photographic work in response to these and
be analysing both.
Consider whether you will be able to produce an extended series of fascinating
visual work alongside the written research.

You should already have a Pinterest account. If not make
sure you create one this week and begin to follow
Beaumont Art Pinterest. Create an album of ideas for your
Personal Study. This is going to be extremely useful for
helping you with creative ideas and finding original,
relevant artists for your chosen topic.
12. * Year 12 Photography Exam Grades will be a combination of the set exam and
year 12 project work.
*please note tasks from week 1 to 4 are designed to ensure you have researched and prepared
for your exam shoot in week 6. All work (including the exam shoot) will be based on your chosen
theme for your personal coursework project.
