SCHOOL DISTRICT IN CHINA -- Equipping schools with the eClass tools to support student success.
1. SCHOOL DISTRICT IN CHINA
Equipping schools with the tools to
support student success.
To provide rural schools with state-of-the-art teaching
resources, this school district in China worked with Lenovo
to roll out a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solution that
enables easy access to learning material.
2. This school district is the government authority responsible for
public education in one of China’s southwestern provinces – a
region that is home to more than 45 million people.
As part of the Chinese government’s commitment to improving
access to and raising the standard of education in less-
developed parts of the country, this school district has been
tasked with building new school facilities in rural areas of the
region. The goal is to ensure a basic minimum standard of
education for all children, and to narrow the gap in
performance between rural and urban areas.
With technology playing a greater role in education than ever
before, the school district wanted to harness the power of VDI
to give students easy access to learning materials. Despite
becoming very popular in recent years, uptake of VDI at
schools in the province lagged behind the national average.
Determined to give all students the best possible education,
the school district engaged Lenovo to provide a robust,
reliable, cost-effective VDI solution for use in the province’s
rural schools. The build quality and stability of the hardware
were key deciding factors. Lenovo servers can withstand
temperatures of up to 45°C, which is an important feature due
to the province’s subtropical, humid climate.
3. The Lenovo VDI solution also delivered an excellent return on
investment. Because processing and data storage is all at the
server layer, it doesn’t matter what kind of client users log onto.
This means that schools can use inexpensive devices, keeping
costs low.
Working closely with Lenovo, the school district implemented
Lenovo ThinkSystem RD450 servers, equipped with Intel® Xeon®
E5 processors, at elementary schools and high schools across
the region, which all support VDI environments based
on Lenovo eClass software. The department also purchased
thousands of thin clients, including Lenovo tablets and
smartphones.
Specifically designed for use in schools, Lenovo eClass
allows teachers to create and push out a desktop image to
hundreds of thin clients at a time. Not only does this simplify
management and maintenance, it delivers fantastic value
for money.
Using the Lenovo eClass solution instead of traditional PCs
reduces costs by about 40%. This means that the school district
can provide more schools with VDI within tight budget
constraints, so more kids have access to learning applications
and resources.
Today, rural schools in the province are reaping the rewards of
the Lenovo eClass solution. For example, teachers can now
stream high-resolution 1080p videos to 60 terminals in a
classroom simultaneously, so students can watch educational
videos that complement the curriculum.
5. This school district in China worked with Lenovo to roll out a
virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) in rural schools. Based on
high-performance, highly reliable Lenovo technology, the VDI
makes it possible for teachers to give kids fast, easy access to
learning materials to support their studies.
