Argumentative Reflection
Argumentative Essay Reflection One of my central struggles throughout high school has been
writing essays and reports for all classes not just english. I was a little worried when I signed up to
take this course, since it counted as a college credit. Even though I was worried about taking this
course, but I am thankful that I did. The main reason behind my decision to take this course is
because I thought it would better prepare me for college. This argumentative essay was one of the
hardest essay that I have written. I have never written in this style before this essay. Even though, I
have never been the best writer, I have always got good grades. After receiving my first rough draft I
knew this class was not going to be easy. The part...show more content...
One of the areas of my writing where I was struggling in using my voice. Granite, there were parts
of my essay where I successfully integrated quotes within my voice, but for the most part that was
my weakest area. For example of one of my better integrated quotes, in my third paragraph when I
say, "Today, consumers rely on social media for everything, whether it is communicating with old
friends, finding new friends, shopping, researching, and staying informed with the latest news.
Daniel adds that, "'Americans who take part in political activities on social networking sites also
tend to be highly active in other areas of political or civic life'" (29), which insinuates that people
rely on social media more today than we have in the past". This was one of my better examples
because I further explain and analyze the quote in my voice instead of just ending the sentence
after the quote. One of my poor examples is, "Many people who suffer from depression care a lot
about what others think about them. That is why many of those people tend to turn to social
media as an outlet to express their feelings". I made a bold statement and did not back up what I
said with my voice I just ended that sentence and moved on. Instead of moving on I should have
explained it further and told them why people tend to turn to social media to express their feelings.
One of the areas of my writing where I was

Failure is the step towards success. Do you agree?
It is often assumed that failure is a deterrent to achievement. Rather, failure should be seen as a
motivator for a person to keep trying until the objective or aim of a particular mission is fulfilled.
Failure often times leads a person to feel helpless, disappointed and depressed. However, one should
not allow this to set them back in trying to achieve the ultimate aim one has set out to do. Failure in
the beginning can often be a powerful incentive to reassess one's position in wanting to achieve the
particular aims; to analyse whether the purpose is worth the trouble the person has to undergo and
the whether the obstacles are surmountable. Practical and...show more content...
Another disadvantage of being an only is that he lacks companionship. He has no brother or sister
to confide in. Growing up as an only child can be very lonely. If you have siblings you will have
to share everything, so you get less; but you also get less of the bad things. Siblings can support
and comfort each in times of trouble. The elder siblings learn to care for the younger ones and the
younger ones learn to respect their elder siblings and have someone to look up to besides their
parents. You are more balanced person than an only child. Another advantage of having siblings is
that your parents' attention is divided among your siblings. As a result, there is less pressure on you
to perform well, be it academically or in other areas. Having siblings also means that you have
companionship, the joy of caring and sharing, and security. I, personally, am happy that I am not an
only child.
Students should not take up part time jobs. Discuss.
Nowadays, students love to have part–time jobs. Their parents approve it easily as they are said to
gain experience from working. However, having a job is a big responsibility for a student. Before,
teenagers at their age were working to help their family because of poverty. Nevertheless, they
were actually eager to study and learn at school for their future. It was not the same as the teenagers
nowadays where they are more likely competing to each other to have a job. Most of the

Argumentative Essay On Memorials
Memorializing events in the history of the world for any purpose has it's positives as well as the
negatives. Ranging from a memorial of a popular United States president from a loved one of a
family, memorials have generally served as a purpose of remembrance from the past of said event.
The purpose of the memorial is usually associated with a positive, uplifting feeling towards the
deceased individual or past event. While this is more or less simply defining what memorials are
for, what is the meaning behind them? What purpose do they serve besides the simplicity that they
are? Important messages from a few varied sources will give a differing viewpoint on memorials
from one to another. The first thought of memorials is the simple, generic...show more content...
Memorials are meant to be striking in the sense that you will notice said memorial and donate some
attention to it. The views of these see this attention capturing as exceedingly high for some purposes.
Some memorials are outstanding in their craftsmanship and aesthetics. This makes people wonder
what could be lurking inside the memorial, or what is near that memorial. What we've got here is a
formula, striking looks of the monument is almost guaranteed to attract some form of attention.
According to Source G, the analogy of tainting the planet with specific memorials are ridiculous, "I
imagined taking a knife and cutting into the earth, opening it up, an initial violence and pain that in
time would heal. The grass would grow back, but the initial cut would remain a pure flat surface in
the earth with a polished, mirrored surface, much like the surface on a geode when you cut it and
polish the edge. The need for the names to be on the memorial would become the memorial; there
was no need to embellish the design further. The people and their names would allow everyone to
respond and remember. The ideals of such nonsensical placements of the memorials are just irritable

Argumentative Essay
The function of an argumentative essay is to show that your assertion (opinion, theory, and
hypothesis) about some phenomenon or phenomena is correct or more truthful than others'. The art
of argumentation is not an easy skill to acquire. Many people might think that if one simply has an
opinion, one can argue it successfully, and these folks are always surprised when others don't agree
with them because their logic seems so correct. Argumentative writing is the act of forming reasons,
making inductions, drawing conclusions, and applying them to the case in discussion; the operation
of inferring propositions, not known or admitted as true, from facts or principles known, admitted, or
proved to be true. It clearly...show more content...
Inductive logic arrives at likely conclusions by counting up evidence, while deductive logic arrives at
necessary conclusions by examining the logical meanings of statements. According to Purdue
University English Profession Neil Gill, deductive arguments can be grouped into two categories: A
Rogerian argument considers several viewpoints and selects the best one, whereas a Toulmin
argument presents a single, linear argument (i.e., A therefore B) in support of a position. Fallacious
Fallacious arguments are logical–seeming arguments that are not valid. Unlike logical arguments,
fallacious arguments do not arrive at valid conclusions or inferences. There are literally dozens of
fallacious arguments you can commit; a fallacious argument style is one that commits one or more
fallacies frequently. For example, if a person in an argument persistently says, "the economy went up
this year, therefore the party in power caused the economy to improve," that person is engaging in
the "post hoc ergo propter hoc" fallacy, an invalid argument of the form "x happened, y happened,
therefore x caused y." Social Argumentation Styles
Argumentation can be looked at in terms of the way the interlocutors perceive each other. According

Language and Identity
Who am I? What is it that defines that personality? Anzaldua argues in her essay that the language is
what defines one's identity. Language is indeed an important component of culture, and culture is
known to be a crucial definer of identity. People use language to connect to their identities and
communicating their realities and values to themselves and to the world around them... In other
words, language is important because people use it to express their thoughts and beliefs. "People
evolve a language in order to describe and thus control their circumstances" (Baldwin 109).
Consequently, language does not necessarily define identity as much as identity defines language.

Tan clearly mentions in her story that she had to speak two different languages to her Asian mom
who had her own made up English. Tan relates to both her Asian descent and American belongings
by using her mom's made up English to speak with her mom, and uses the proper English to give
lectures and speak to most Americans. On the same grounds, Anzaldua learned through her life
experiences to frequently use multiple types of English, and many other Dialects of proper Spanish
and Mexican Spanish. She uses each language to communicate, connect and affiliate to specific
people according to their background. This proves that the assumption that language defines culture
and identity fails. What happens to the people who speak many languages, do they not get the
benefit and pride of belonging to a certain community? Rather the contrary, they belong to multiple
communities and they choose which group they want to communicate with and with which
language. People have the ability to switch from a language to another to be part of a group and this
supports the idea that identity defines and shapes language, and not the opposite.
Language is used as a way to identify with people, but it is also used to distinguish between them.
People use language to differentiate between people and associate them to a specific culture and
community according to the language they speak. America is known for having a diverse

Argumentative Essay On Stereotyping
Racial Stereotypes As a little girl, I was ashamed to be Indian. This was due to all the negative
stereotypes surrounding my race. In my childhood, I heard people say Indians were smelly,
stingy, and stuck up (alliteration). In fear of being teased and misjudged, I tried to be as "normal" as
possible to make everyone forget that I was Indian (pathos). As I grew older, I learned to be proud of
who I am, but disregarding stereotypes is still a challenge. I am sure everyone in this room has been
affected by racial stereotypes before and believe me, I know what you are going through (ethos).
You may think that only bigoted and prejudiced people used stereotypes, however, recent studies
have shown that everyone categorizes people on a daily basis without even realizing it. Most
people think stereotypes are just jokes, yet research proves that stereotypes have serious negative
effects. People should stop stereotyping because stereotypes cause "stereotype threats", create social
division, and lead to racism (parallelism). The first effect of stereotyping is a phenomenon known as
"stereotype threat" that occurs in a situation where a person is in fear of unintentionally confirming a
negative stereotype. Several studies have been conducted to discover the effects of stereotype
threats. For example, I discovered that Toni Schmader, an assistant professor of the UA psychology
department, and Michael Johns, a UA graduate (ethos), conducted studies that showed, "college
women score lower on tests of mathematical ability, and Hispanic students might score lower on tests
of intelligence, not because they have less ability, but because reminders of negative stereotypes
temporarily decrease their 'working memory capacity' (UA News Services, "Exploring the Negative
Consequences of Stereotyping", UANews.Arizona.edu)." This demonstrates that the students did not
do worse on the test due to their lack of skills, but rather due to negative stereotypes. In a similar
study by professors Claude Steele and Joshua Aronson, African American and White college students
took the same intelligence test under two conditions. In the stereotype threat condition the students
were told the test would evaluate their intelligence, and in the

FINAL ARGUMENTATIVE RESEARCH PAPERIITechnology in The Classroom With technology
rapidly advancing in a brief period of time, elementary school students should have the opportunity to
use technology in their classrooms. The main issue with technology in schools is that there is not
enough technology being integrated into the classrooms. Technology may be expensive, but it can
help students in the long run and it can also help the environment. These are the issues that most
people gravitate to argue about on either side. However, this issue does have a potential solution
that can help our schools financially and save our environment. One of the reasons why schools
should make the switch to use technology in the classrooms is because, textbooks become heavier
over the span of a student's life. The one thing every child dreads the most about going to school, is
having to lug around their huge backpack full of textbooks and homework. The Archives of Disease
in Childhood conducted a study and found that an ordinary student's backpack weighs 15.4 pounds,
which is a generally three to four textbooks (ProCon, 2016). The common weight for a single tablet
is .75 pounds to two pounds. Pediatricians have strongly recommended students to not haul more
than 15 percent of their body weight in a backpack (ProCon, 2016). From 1994 to 2000, data
from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission reported more than 23,000
students, from the ages of six to eighteen years old were sent to emergency rooms for back
injuries that were related to using a backpack (ProCon, 2016). Some of the injuries were
contusions, fractures, strains and sprains to the back and shoulders. Tons of people suffer from
back issues like scoliosis, this is a problem in schools because students are putting more strain on
their back. Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine and idiopathic scoliosis is common in
children from the age of at least 10 years old

Argumentative Essay On English Class
What I am about to do is inform you on how to survive the ferocious English 1302 course to make
life a bit easier on you. I mean, you're at the edge of your seat dying with loads of work, starving
like a dying child, living off of pennies and the only thing that is keeping you from collapsing is
your Starbucks drink that is filled with four shots of espresso, right? Well, by the time you get to the
end of this letter, you'll thank me later for it.
When you enter your English class, you will come across many assignments. They happen to be your
annotated bibliography and your researched argument essay, or in other words RAE. The purpose of
the bibliography is to critique sources and gather enough data for you essay. It includes citations, a
summary of your topic and personal thoughts of the sources you chose. The RAE is a persuasive
essay where you attempt to create an argument that is supported with the information you gathered
in your annotated bibliography. In my RAE, I argued that children can recuperate after their parents'
separation. Its purpose was to demonstrate that if parents were to come together and realize that

I learned that by annotating a certain part of the reading, it helped increase my understanding. Not
only that but it helped me not miss a single bit of important information. Writing notes in the
margins of the text was really helpful because it was a summary of the entire paragraph and
whenever I would look back at my notes, it reminded me of what I read. Also, circling words I
didn't know was very accommodating because again, it helped me understand the concept a bit
more. Underlining words that seem important to you is a big tip I suggest because you are able to
use that information when you are talking about your source. You can expand that information by
linking it to another similar source. Therefore, it is important to annotate. It'll take up extra time but

Skills vs. Knowledge in Education
Jonan Donaldson
Introduction
Main Idea One: The Other Side – Learning Information is needed for tests a) Tests are the best way
to compare students b) Tests measure if you understand something c) Not all students can have the
same skills, but all can have the same knowledge
Main Idea Two: My Side 1– Education is about understanding a) Knowledge is limited, but
imagination encircles the world (creativity) b) Knowledge is what other people think about
something, but understanding is what you think. c) Everybody sees, hears, feels, and thinks
differently, so each person will have a different understanding of the same thing.
Main Idea Three:...show more content...
If a person knows many facts, it is impressive, but not very useful. It is of much greater importance
to be able to find information quickly, organize that information, analyze and understand the main
ideas, put different pieces of information together (synthesize), and create new information. Together
these skills make what we call information management and innovation, the skills which are most
desired in the business world. Most people in the world believe that education is about remembering
things to take tests which measure one's performance against other people who have studied the
same information. However, this idea no longer matches the reality of the modern world in which
knowledge is less important than creativity and deep understanding. To be successful in the age of
technology, education must focus on helping students gain information management and innovation
skills.

Examine the key features of the Teleological argument.
The word teleological comes from the Greek word 'Telos' which means purpose. The teleological
argument is a posteriori and like the cosmological argument, attempts to prove the existence of God.
It claims that certain phenomena within the universe appear to display features of design and are
perfectly adapted to fulfil their function. Therefore, if features of the universe are so perfectly
designed, for example the structure and function of the heart, then there must be a designer, which
points towards the existence of God.
The teleological argument is based around the idea that the universe in some way demands the
existence of an intelligent being that designed the universe to...show more content...
The Anthropic argument also features in the design argument and is similar to Paleys analogy. It
looks at the purposes that every part of the world has (for example trees take in carbon dioxide and
release oxygen that we breathe) and from these purpose–serving things in the world, the argument
states it was placed there by a creator to serve this purpose. Tennant argued:
"The many accidents of physics and astronomy have worked together to our benefit and shows that
in some sense the universe must have seen us coming". Examine the strengths and weakness of the
Teleological argument.
A major strength of the teleological argument is that it is logical. The design of the universe is
apparent and evident for everyone to see, and everyone can appreciate that such beauty and design
which the universe possesses requires a constant effort and input of energy to make it and keep it so.
Richard Swinburne argued that the design and precision of the universe cannot be explained by
science, and can only be explained in terms of the purposes of an intelligent being: God. He argues;
"Of course there is order in the world: if there were not order, humanity would not exist to discover
it!"
As order is existent in the universe, the simplest explanation is God, and God is also the best
explanation for the universe's order. An additional Strength of the teleological argument is

Examples Of Argumentative Essay
Argumentative essay presents a point of view about something and explains the reasons in order to
win readers' agreement. It is built around a specific statement (or main premise) that is debatable
within the field in which students are studying. In other words, at the center of an argumentative
essay is a statement with which readers may disagree. The argumentative essay will need to support
that statement in a manner that convinces the readers of its truth. It mainly strives to convince the
reader of the writer's point of view, using reasonable and ethical methods .The process of argument
composition varies from writer to writer, most writers follow these three stages: forming an
argument, which can consist of discovering a motive for writing and identifying an audience to
address, discovering and sharpening a position, and developing an appropriate style; supporting the
argument; and reviewing the argument, which can include considering the image projected by
argument, making substantial additions or deletions to a first draft, and adding an introduction and

appeal and establishment of writer credibility. Finally, she notes that audience awareness is an
important characteristic of successful argumentative writing. The writer must observe an awareness

The Major Features of the Ontological Argument for the Existence of God
The ontological argument for the existence of God was originally set out in eleventh century by St.
Anselm in his Proslogian. Anselm was a Benedictine monk, Archbishop of Canterbury, and one of
the great medieval theologians. It has received a lot of both support and criticism from leaning
philosophers. The argument is appeals to those who already believe in the existence of God than to
an atheist. The argument is entirely a priori; it seeks to demonstrate that God exists on the basis of
that concept alone, and show existence as an attribute/characteristic of God, in the same way
omnipotence and benevolence are considered to...show more content...
So according to Anslem it is self–contradictory to conceive of something than which nothing greater
can be thought and yet to deny that that something exists. The second stage is the idea that it is
illogical to think God does not exist. This idea is that because the highest possible thought of God
is the He exists, thus his existence is impossible. This is the concept of necessary existence, God
cannot not exist, and something which has necessary existence is something that exists in all
possible worlds. God is perceived to have necessary existence because God is eternal and created the
world and He is not limited by time, as He is outside of it. Thus God must exist in reality.
Later in the 17th century Descartes developed the argument further, he used his form of the
ontological argument to be a part of his argument that the external world exists. Descartes viewed
God as a supremely perfect being, possessing all perfections, which includes existence and thus
God has to exist. Descartes argue that an object had to posses certain qualities or else it could not
be considered to be an object, for example, triangles angles must add up to 180 degrees. In the same
way thus existence cannot be separated from the idea of God.
In the 20th Century there have been two main philosophers who have worked noteably on the
Ontological Argument, Norman Malcolm and Alvin Plantinga. Malcolm's

The Importance Of Writing An Argumentative Essay
As a student in a beginning English class some elements may seem difficult at the beginning but
with practice they become long lasting skills. Writing an argumentative is not an easy task there is a
lot of elements that have to come together to create a successful essay but as many other things, it
requires constant practice and effort. At the start of this course I wasn't a very good writer myself,
and I can see the huge improvement this course made by looking at my first argumentative essay. I
was able to identify and apply the requisites of a good argument essay. A well thought structure,
reliable evidence, and a counterargument are three essential components of argumentative writing.
The structure of an essay is the foundation to a good argumentative paper. Throughout this course
I learned the importance of having an essay structure, before I started this class I didn't have a
very clear vision of how to correctly format my essay. In my diagnostic essay, which was the first
one I wrote for English 1302, had five paragraphs. That is considered a standard structure of many
essays but it is more of a skeleton. Looking back at that essay I see how poor my introduction was,
I did not even have a clear thesis. One only thing even close to one that I could spot was, "The
"millennials," people born in the last two decades of the 20th century, are failing to reflect Rich's
model for a good education." It merely addresses the topic in a simple way. It did not serve the

What Makes An Effective Argument Ineffective?
1.The basic parts of an effective argument are a stated clearly defined issue, makes a claim, and
offers support for that claim. Sometimes an argument may also recognize opposing viewpoints and
incorporate them into the argument
2.What makes an argument ineffective is when using emotional appeals to distract a reader from a
lack of evidence. Also the use of faulty reasoning, and inaccurate facts.
3.An issue is a problem, controversy, or an idea that people can have different viewpoints about.
The term claim is a point in which a writer is trying to prove. This is typically the writer's viewpoint
on the issue. A refutation is recognizing and auguring against opposing viewpoints.

Features Of Argumentative Essay

  • 1. Argumentative Reflection Argumentative Essay Reflection One of my central struggles throughout high school has been writing essays and reports for all classes not just english. I was a little worried when I signed up to take this course, since it counted as a college credit. Even though I was worried about taking this course, but I am thankful that I did. The main reason behind my decision to take this course is because I thought it would better prepare me for college. This argumentative essay was one of the hardest essay that I have written. I have never written in this style before this essay. Even though, I have never been the best writer, I have always got good grades. After receiving my first rough draft I knew this class was not going to be easy. The part...show more content... One of the areas of my writing where I was struggling in using my voice. Granite, there were parts of my essay where I successfully integrated quotes within my voice, but for the most part that was my weakest area. For example of one of my better integrated quotes, in my third paragraph when I say, "Today, consumers rely on social media for everything, whether it is communicating with old friends, finding new friends, shopping, researching, and staying informed with the latest news. Daniel adds that, "'Americans who take part in political activities on social networking sites also tend to be highly active in other areas of political or civic life'" (29), which insinuates that people rely on social media more today than we have in the past". This was one of my better examples because I further explain and analyze the quote in my voice instead of just ending the sentence after the quote. One of my poor examples is, "Many people who suffer from depression care a lot about what others think about them. That is why many of those people tend to turn to social media as an outlet to express their feelings". I made a bold statement and did not back up what I said with my voice I just ended that sentence and moved on. Instead of moving on I should have explained it further and told them why people tend to turn to social media to express their feelings. • 2. Argumentative Essays Failure is the step towards success. Do you agree? It is often assumed that failure is a deterrent to achievement. Rather, failure should be seen as a motivator for a person to keep trying until the objective or aim of a particular mission is fulfilled. Failure often times leads a person to feel helpless, disappointed and depressed. However, one should not allow this to set them back in trying to achieve the ultimate aim one has set out to do. Failure in the beginning can often be a powerful incentive to reassess one's position in wanting to achieve the particular aims; to analyse whether the purpose is worth the trouble the person has to undergo and the whether the obstacles are surmountable. Practical and...show more content... Another disadvantage of being an only is that he lacks companionship. He has no brother or sister to confide in. Growing up as an only child can be very lonely. If you have siblings you will have to share everything, so you get less; but you also get less of the bad things. Siblings can support and comfort each in times of trouble. The elder siblings learn to care for the younger ones and the younger ones learn to respect their elder siblings and have someone to look up to besides their parents. You are more balanced person than an only child. Another advantage of having siblings is that your parents' attention is divided among your siblings. As a result, there is less pressure on you to perform well, be it academically or in other areas. Having siblings also means that you have companionship, the joy of caring and sharing, and security. I, personally, am happy that I am not an only child. Students should not take up part time jobs. Discuss. Nowadays, students love to have part–time jobs. Their parents approve it easily as they are said to gain experience from working. However, having a job is a big responsibility for a student. Before, teenagers at their age were working to help their family because of poverty. Nevertheless, they were actually eager to study and learn at school for their future. It was not the same as the teenagers nowadays where they are more likely competing to each other to have a job. Most of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Argumentative Essay On Memorials Memorializing events in the history of the world for any purpose has it's positives as well as the negatives. Ranging from a memorial of a popular United States president from a loved one of a family, memorials have generally served as a purpose of remembrance from the past of said event. The purpose of the memorial is usually associated with a positive, uplifting feeling towards the deceased individual or past event. While this is more or less simply defining what memorials are for, what is the meaning behind them? What purpose do they serve besides the simplicity that they are? Important messages from a few varied sources will give a differing viewpoint on memorials from one to another. The first thought of memorials is the simple, generic...show more content... Memorials are meant to be striking in the sense that you will notice said memorial and donate some attention to it. The views of these see this attention capturing as exceedingly high for some purposes. Some memorials are outstanding in their craftsmanship and aesthetics. This makes people wonder what could be lurking inside the memorial, or what is near that memorial. What we've got here is a formula, striking looks of the monument is almost guaranteed to attract some form of attention. According to Source G, the analogy of tainting the planet with specific memorials are ridiculous, "I imagined taking a knife and cutting into the earth, opening it up, an initial violence and pain that in time would heal. The grass would grow back, but the initial cut would remain a pure flat surface in the earth with a polished, mirrored surface, much like the surface on a geode when you cut it and polish the edge. The need for the names to be on the memorial would become the memorial; there was no need to embellish the design further. The people and their names would allow everyone to respond and remember. The ideals of such nonsensical placements of the memorials are just irritable at the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Argumentative Essay Argumentative Essay The function of an argumentative essay is to show that your assertion (opinion, theory, and hypothesis) about some phenomenon or phenomena is correct or more truthful than others'. The art of argumentation is not an easy skill to acquire. Many people might think that if one simply has an opinion, one can argue it successfully, and these folks are always surprised when others don't agree with them because their logic seems so correct. Argumentative writing is the act of forming reasons, making inductions, drawing conclusions, and applying them to the case in discussion; the operation of inferring propositions, not known or admitted as true, from facts or principles known, admitted, or proved to be true. It clearly...show more content... Inductive logic arrives at likely conclusions by counting up evidence, while deductive logic arrives at necessary conclusions by examining the logical meanings of statements. According to Purdue University English Profession Neil Gill, deductive arguments can be grouped into two categories: A Rogerian argument considers several viewpoints and selects the best one, whereas a Toulmin argument presents a single, linear argument (i.e., A therefore B) in support of a position. Fallacious Fallacious arguments are logical–seeming arguments that are not valid. Unlike logical arguments, fallacious arguments do not arrive at valid conclusions or inferences. There are literally dozens of fallacious arguments you can commit; a fallacious argument style is one that commits one or more fallacies frequently. For example, if a person in an argument persistently says, "the economy went up this year, therefore the party in power caused the economy to improve," that person is engaging in the "post hoc ergo propter hoc" fallacy, an invalid argument of the form "x happened, y happened, therefore x caused y." Social Argumentation Styles Argumentation can be looked at in terms of the way the interlocutors perceive each other. According to the textbook "Perspectives Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Argumentative Essay English Composition Language and Identity Who am I? What is it that defines that personality? Anzaldua argues in her essay that the language is what defines one's identity. Language is indeed an important component of culture, and culture is known to be a crucial definer of identity. People use language to connect to their identities and communicating their realities and values to themselves and to the world around them... In other words, language is important because people use it to express their thoughts and beliefs. "People evolve a language in order to describe and thus control their circumstances" (Baldwin 109). Consequently, language does not necessarily define identity as much as identity defines language. People decide on...show more content... Tan clearly mentions in her story that she had to speak two different languages to her Asian mom who had her own made up English. Tan relates to both her Asian descent and American belongings by using her mom's made up English to speak with her mom, and uses the proper English to give lectures and speak to most Americans. On the same grounds, Anzaldua learned through her life experiences to frequently use multiple types of English, and many other Dialects of proper Spanish and Mexican Spanish. She uses each language to communicate, connect and affiliate to specific people according to their background. This proves that the assumption that language defines culture and identity fails. What happens to the people who speak many languages, do they not get the benefit and pride of belonging to a certain community? Rather the contrary, they belong to multiple communities and they choose which group they want to communicate with and with which language. People have the ability to switch from a language to another to be part of a group and this supports the idea that identity defines and shapes language, and not the opposite. Language is used as a way to identify with people, but it is also used to distinguish between them. People use language to differentiate between people and associate them to a specific culture and community according to the language they speak. America is known for having a diverse Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Argumentative Essay On Stereotyping Racial Stereotypes As a little girl, I was ashamed to be Indian. This was due to all the negative stereotypes surrounding my race. In my childhood, I heard people say Indians were smelly, stingy, and stuck up (alliteration). In fear of being teased and misjudged, I tried to be as "normal" as possible to make everyone forget that I was Indian (pathos). As I grew older, I learned to be proud of who I am, but disregarding stereotypes is still a challenge. I am sure everyone in this room has been affected by racial stereotypes before and believe me, I know what you are going through (ethos). You may think that only bigoted and prejudiced people used stereotypes, however, recent studies have shown that everyone categorizes people on a daily basis without even realizing it. Most people think stereotypes are just jokes, yet research proves that stereotypes have serious negative effects. People should stop stereotyping because stereotypes cause "stereotype threats", create social division, and lead to racism (parallelism). The first effect of stereotyping is a phenomenon known as "stereotype threat" that occurs in a situation where a person is in fear of unintentionally confirming a negative stereotype. Several studies have been conducted to discover the effects of stereotype threats. For example, I discovered that Toni Schmader, an assistant professor of the UA psychology department, and Michael Johns, a UA graduate (ethos), conducted studies that showed, "college women score lower on tests of mathematical ability, and Hispanic students might score lower on tests of intelligence, not because they have less ability, but because reminders of negative stereotypes temporarily decrease their 'working memory capacity' (UA News Services, "Exploring the Negative Consequences of Stereotyping", UANews.Arizona.edu)." This demonstrates that the students did not do worse on the test due to their lack of skills, but rather due to negative stereotypes. In a similar study by professors Claude Steele and Joshua Aronson, African American and White college students took the same intelligence test under two conditions. In the stereotype threat condition the students were told the test would evaluate their intelligence, and in the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It's more of an opinion on what you think. Just like Dave and Janet. Dave definitely sent a more negative tone because he wanted to get rid of ads in school. • 8. Technology In The Classroom Argumentative Essay Page 2 of 11 ZOOM RUNNING HEAD: FINAL ARGUMENTATIVE RESEARCH PAPERIFinal Argumentative Research Paper Griselda Avila Glendale Community College FINAL ARGUMENTATIVE RESEARCH PAPERIITechnology in The Classroom With technology rapidly advancing in a brief period of time, elementary school students should have the opportunity to use technology in their classrooms. The main issue with technology in schools is that there is not enough technology being integrated into the classrooms. Technology may be expensive, but it can help students in the long run and it can also help the environment. These are the issues that most people gravitate to argue about on either side. However, this issue does have a potential solution that can help our schools financially and save our environment. One of the reasons why schools should make the switch to use technology in the classrooms is because, textbooks become heavier over the span of a student's life. The one thing every child dreads the most about going to school, is having to lug around their huge backpack full of textbooks and homework. The Archives of Disease in Childhood conducted a study and found that an ordinary student's backpack weighs 15.4 pounds, which is a generally three to four textbooks (ProCon, 2016). The common weight for a single tablet is .75 pounds to two pounds. Pediatricians have strongly recommended students to not haul more than 15 percent of their body weight in a backpack (ProCon, 2016). From 1994 to 2000, data from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission reported more than 23,000 students, from the ages of six to eighteen years old were sent to emergency rooms for back injuries that were related to using a backpack (ProCon, 2016). Some of the injuries were contusions, fractures, strains and sprains to the back and shoulders. Tons of people suffer from back issues like scoliosis, this is a problem in schools because students are putting more strain on their back. Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine and idiopathic scoliosis is common in children from the age of at least 10 years old FINAL ARGUMENTATIVE RESEARCH PAPERIII(Nordqvist, 2017). • 9. Argumentative Essay On English Class What I am about to do is inform you on how to survive the ferocious English 1302 course to make life a bit easier on you. I mean, you're at the edge of your seat dying with loads of work, starving like a dying child, living off of pennies and the only thing that is keeping you from collapsing is your Starbucks drink that is filled with four shots of espresso, right? Well, by the time you get to the end of this letter, you'll thank me later for it. When you enter your English class, you will come across many assignments. They happen to be your annotated bibliography and your researched argument essay, or in other words RAE. The purpose of the bibliography is to critique sources and gather enough data for you essay. It includes citations, a summary of your topic and personal thoughts of the sources you chose. The RAE is a persuasive essay where you attempt to create an argument that is supported with the information you gathered in your annotated bibliography. In my RAE, I argued that children can recuperate after their parents' separation. Its purpose was to demonstrate that if parents were to come together and realize that ...show more content... I learned that by annotating a certain part of the reading, it helped increase my understanding. Not only that but it helped me not miss a single bit of important information. Writing notes in the margins of the text was really helpful because it was a summary of the entire paragraph and whenever I would look back at my notes, it reminded me of what I read. Also, circling words I didn't know was very accommodating because again, it helped me understand the concept a bit more. Underlining words that seem important to you is a big tip I suggest because you are able to use that information when you are talking about your source. You can expand that information by linking it to another similar source. Therefore, it is important to annotate. It'll take up extra time but it will be worth Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Sample Argumentative Essay Skills vs. Knowledge in Education Jonan Donaldson Introduction Main Idea One: The Other Side – Learning Information is needed for tests a) Tests are the best way to compare students b) Tests measure if you understand something c) Not all students can have the same skills, but all can have the same knowledge Main Idea Two: My Side 1– Education is about understanding a) Knowledge is limited, but imagination encircles the world (creativity) b) Knowledge is what other people think about something, but understanding is what you think. c) Everybody sees, hears, feels, and thinks differently, so each person will have a different understanding of the same thing. Main Idea Three:...show more content... If a person knows many facts, it is impressive, but not very useful. It is of much greater importance to be able to find information quickly, organize that information, analyze and understand the main ideas, put different pieces of information together (synthesize), and create new information. Together these skills make what we call information management and innovation, the skills which are most desired in the business world. Most people in the world believe that education is about remembering things to take tests which measure one's performance against other people who have studied the same information. However, this idea no longer matches the reality of the modern world in which knowledge is less important than creativity and deep understanding. To be successful in the age of technology, education must focus on helping students gain information management and innovation skills. Sources Cited Gardner, H. (1999). • 11. Examine the key features of the Teleological argument. The word teleological comes from the Greek word 'Telos' which means purpose. The teleological argument is a posteriori and like the cosmological argument, attempts to prove the existence of God. It claims that certain phenomena within the universe appear to display features of design and are perfectly adapted to fulfil their function. Therefore, if features of the universe are so perfectly designed, for example the structure and function of the heart, then there must be a designer, which points towards the existence of God. The teleological argument is based around the idea that the universe in some way demands the existence of an intelligent being that designed the universe to...show more content... The Anthropic argument also features in the design argument and is similar to Paleys analogy. It looks at the purposes that every part of the world has (for example trees take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen that we breathe) and from these purpose–serving things in the world, the argument states it was placed there by a creator to serve this purpose. Tennant argued: "The many accidents of physics and astronomy have worked together to our benefit and shows that in some sense the universe must have seen us coming". Examine the strengths and weakness of the Teleological argument. A major strength of the teleological argument is that it is logical. The design of the universe is apparent and evident for everyone to see, and everyone can appreciate that such beauty and design which the universe possesses requires a constant effort and input of energy to make it and keep it so. Richard Swinburne argued that the design and precision of the universe cannot be explained by science, and can only be explained in terms of the purposes of an intelligent being: God. He argues; "Of course there is order in the world: if there were not order, humanity would not exist to discover it!" As order is existent in the universe, the simplest explanation is God, and God is also the best explanation for the universe's order. • 12. Examples Of Argumentative Essay Argumentative essay presents a point of view about something and explains the reasons in order to win readers' agreement. It is built around a specific statement (or main premise) that is debatable within the field in which students are studying. In other words, at the center of an argumentative essay is a statement with which readers may disagree. The argumentative essay will need to support that statement in a manner that convinces the readers of its truth. It mainly strives to convince the reader of the writer's point of view, using reasonable and ethical methods .The process of argument composition varies from writer to writer, most writers follow these three stages: forming an argument, which can consist of discovering a motive for writing and identifying an audience to address, discovering and sharpening a position, and developing an appropriate style; supporting the argument; and reviewing the argument, which can include considering the image projected by argument, making substantial additions or deletions to a first draft, and adding an introduction and conclusion (Cheng and Chen 2009, Day,1997, Liu,2005,Mayberry,2009)....show more content... The first feature is superstructure which refers to the organizational plan of any text and the linear progression of the text. The second feature is the quality of logical reasoning which is assessed by analyzing the interrelationships of writers' assertions and the associated support or data provided to substantiate those claims. The third feature is identified as persuasive appeal, including affective appeal and establishment of writer credibility. • 13. The Major Features of the Ontological Argument for the Existence of God The ontological argument for the existence of God was originally set out in eleventh century by St. Anselm in his Proslogian. Anselm was a Benedictine monk, Archbishop of Canterbury, and one of the great medieval theologians. It has received a lot of both support and criticism from leaning philosophers. The argument is appeals to those who already believe in the existence of God than to an atheist. The argument is entirely a priori; it seeks to demonstrate that God exists on the basis of that concept alone, and show existence as an attribute/characteristic of God, in the same way omnipotence and benevolence are considered to...show more content... So according to Anslem it is self–contradictory to conceive of something than which nothing greater can be thought and yet to deny that that something exists. The second stage is the idea that it is illogical to think God does not exist. This idea is that because the highest possible thought of God is the He exists, thus his existence is impossible. This is the concept of necessary existence, God cannot not exist, and something which has necessary existence is something that exists in all possible worlds. God is perceived to have necessary existence because God is eternal and created the world and He is not limited by time, as He is outside of it. Thus God must exist in reality. Later in the 17th century Descartes developed the argument further, he used his form of the ontological argument to be a part of his argument that the external world exists. Descartes viewed God as a supremely perfect being, possessing all perfections, which includes existence and thus God has to exist. Descartes argue that an object had to posses certain qualities or else it could not be considered to be an object, for example, triangles angles must add up to 180 degrees. In the same way thus existence cannot be separated from the idea of God. In the 20th Century there have been two main philosophers who have worked noteably on the Ontological Argument, Norman Malcolm and Alvin Plantinga. Malcolm's Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 17. The Importance Of Writing An Argumentative Essay As a student in a beginning English class some elements may seem difficult at the beginning but with practice they become long lasting skills. Writing an argumentative is not an easy task there is a lot of elements that have to come together to create a successful essay but as many other things, it requires constant practice and effort. At the start of this course I wasn't a very good writer myself, and I can see the huge improvement this course made by looking at my first argumentative essay. I was able to identify and apply the requisites of a good argument essay. A well thought structure, reliable evidence, and a counterargument are three essential components of argumentative writing. The structure of an essay is the foundation to a good argumentative paper. Throughout this course I learned the importance of having an essay structure, before I started this class I didn't have a very clear vision of how to correctly format my essay. In my diagnostic essay, which was the first one I wrote for English 1302, had five paragraphs. That is considered a standard structure of many essays but it is more of a skeleton. Looking back at that essay I see how poor my introduction was, I did not even have a clear thesis. One only thing even close to one that I could spot was, "The "millennials," people born in the last two decades of the 20th century, are failing to reflect Rich's model for a good education." It merely addresses the topic in a simple way. It did not serve the purpose a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
