Data.gov was launched in the US to the general public in May 2009, with the UK government launching data.gov.uk in January 2010. Both Governments are releasing public data to help people understand how government works and how policies are made. Making this data easily available means it will be easier for people to make decisions and suggestions about government policies based on detailed information. Data.gov and Data.gov.uk brings together Government data sets in one searchable website. The websites strive to make government more transparent and are committed to creating an unprecedented level of openness in Government. The openness derived from these websites aims to strengthen the Nation's democracy and promote efficiency and effectiveness in Government.

There are currently over 5,400 datasets available, from all central government departments and a number of other public sector bodies and local authorities. Is data just public information? Not really. From data.gov.uk, you can access the raw data driving government forward. This can then be used by people to build useful applications that help society, or investigate how effective policy changes have been over time. How can I use the data? You can use the data in all sorts of ways. This may be simply to analyse trends over time from one policy area, or to compare how different parts of government go about their work. Technical users will be able to create useful applications out of the raw data files, which can then be used by everyone.
A primary goal of Data.gov is to improve access to government data and expand creative use of those data beyond the walls of government by encouraging innovative ideas and the creation of web applications. Data.gov and data.gov.uk enables the public to participate in government by providing downloadable datasets to build applications, conduct analyses, and perform research. The websites aim to continue to improve based on feedback , comments, and recommendations from the public and therefore they encourage individuals to suggest datasets they'd like to see, rate and comment on current datasets, and suggest ways to improve the site. When data.gov.uk was officially launched in January 2010 it contained 2,500 data sets and more than 2,400 developers had registered to test the site, provide feedback and start experimenting with the data.
