2. Purpose and aims
There are many reasons why we needed to conduct this
research. Having the questionnaires with the relevant data on
them helped us really see what types of films the public
really enjoy watching so in order to find out what the target
would like to see for our horror trailer we handed out
questionnaires to a selection of different people from
different local areas. This presentation will show the
results that we found from conducting a questionnaire. The
results that we had got from our target audience will allow
us to create an effective horror film with a clear message
that the audience are able to understand and connect with.
3. INTRODUCTION
Why did whe chose to use questionnaires to gather information
from the audience for our horror movie?
We chose to use a questionnaire because it is easier and more effective in collecting
information and we get to know what the audience like by seeing their personal reactions
in real life which will help when making our film. By using a questionnaire as a method of
collecting data, it allowed us to collect the information quick and was not time
consuming, quantitative research collected and the research we gathered was primary so
this is reliable and original information. Using questionnaires can allow you to make your
own questions relating to the topic you are researching about and it will not cost a lot
of money to create as you can do it by yourself. Questionnaires are very popular methods
to use when wanting to collect quick and short information from a large target audience.
The questions can be short and relatable to the topic.
4. Gender and Age
In our questionnaire, we asked the audience about
their age and gender. It is important that we asked
about their age and gender because this will allow
us to approach any age group and see what ages
prefer horror movies and what gender, female or
male, likes to watch horror movies. From the data
collected in our questionnaires,it shows that the
gender, male, is the most popular for watching
horror movies. This will allow us to decide on what
target audience we will be targeting. This shows
that men like horror films more than women as they
don't get as scared as women as they are seen as
macho.
5. Town and Employment status
We also asked the audience about what town they live in and
their employment status. The reason why we asked about town,
is because we need to know where people live about so we can
advertise our horror trailer near the places they live so
they will be aware of our horror trailer. The reason for
asking about their employment status, it to know how much the
audience are willing to pay to watch a horror movie. We have
analysed from our questionnaires that, most people will spend
around £5 or less on tickets to watch a horror movie and they
are around young ages such as under 16 and upwards as they
have more free time so they will have extra time to watch the
horror movie. This shows that the younger audience have
disposable income, which means that they are able to buy
luxuries rather than necessities. Because the audience are
around young ages, we will have to put into consideration
that we shouldn't make the horror movie too expensive to
watch as the audience may not be able to afford it and then
no one will be able to watch it.
6. Town and Employment status
On the other hand, the town that most people lived
in was Barkingside. We will be able to advertise
leaflets or posters around this area as most
people who watch horror movies come from
Barkingside. Also, there is a cinema near that
area so we may decide to play our horror movie in
the cinema near Barkingside which is, The Premier
Cinema, because most people watch horror movies in
the cinema and because most of the audience come
from Barkingside, they will be able to go to
cinema as it is near to them and can afford the
tickets as the tickets in the cinema cost £4.
7. Media purchasing and Consumption habits
We asked the audience how much they spend on horror films
in a month and the results showed that the majority
people spend around £5 or less. We also asked their
preferred consumption method of watching films and out of
the 30 people in the survey, there was a high of 63.3%
choosing cinema, 26.7% with online streaming and the
remaining amount choosing either DVD’s or to pay per
view. Finally we asked who the public enjoy watching
horror films with and it came back with 46.7% watching
with friends and the rest watching with family, partners
or alone. The audience will also have access to mobile
devices or tablets or even a computer which will allow
them to watch the trailer on their devices. The trailer
will play before a main feature in the cinema so the
audience can watch the trailer at the cinema because the
main movie they have gone to watch.
8. Personal preferences
The data from the questionnaires have shown that sound has been the most popular topic in a
horror movie that scares people the most. This has given us an idea about what topic scares
the audience the most and we will need to make the sound the scariest and main priority as
this scares the audience the most and we will need to make sure the sound in our movie will
scare the audience when watching the movie. The next question we asked the audience was,
‘what is the best setting for a horror movie?’. The most popular setting was the abandoned
asylum, this suggests that people are frightened. An abandoned asylum would be scary because
it's a dark place, and people are scared of the dark. This also startles the audience because
it makes people think about how people in the past used to live there and now they are
dead.We will use this information to decide what setting we will need to use in our horror
movie because we need to use the information that most people want to see in a horror movie.
9. Personal preferences
The other question asked was, ‘which antagonist
scares you the most?’. It has shown in the
questionnaires that in the movie Conjuring 2, the
dead nun, has been the most popular antagonist
chosen by the audience because this scares them
the most when they look at her in the movie. They
suggested that they are scared of the nun because
it is almost human lookalike with her pale face
and yellow eyes and this has given the chance to
use a similar antagonist in our horror movie as we
know that the bnun scares people the most out of
all the other antagonist such as, chucky, scream,
red devil and dead bride, used in other horror
movies.
10. Conclusion
In conclusion, we have gathered information from the questionnaires
that, the age that watched horror movies the most is 17 to 20 year
olds. The popular gender is male, people who are full time employed
watch horror movies the most, barkingside is where people lived the
most, the favourite genre was paranormal, people would rather watch
a horror movie in the cinemas than anywhere else, £0-£5 is the most
people will spend to watch horror movies, every month people watch
horror movies, people prefer to watch horror movies with a lot of
jump scenes, friends is the popular option that the audience have
chosen, sound scares the audience the most in horror movies, the
best setting for a horror movie is an abandoned asylum and the most
popular antagonist was the dead nun from the horror movie, Conjuring

11. Proposal
As a group, we have come to a decision based from the results of the questionnaires to create
our horror movie. Firstly, we have decided to make our target audience of males because the
most popular gender was males that we conducted from the questionnaires. If we target the
male audience, they are more likely to watch our horror movie as the gender mens, watches
horror movies the most so they are more likely than females to watch our movie. Secondly, we
have agreed to advertise our horror movie in the town, Barkingside. This is because the
results from the questionnaires have shown that most people who watch horror movies come from
Barkingside. Also, we have decided that we will not be charging the audience too much for the
price of the tickets for our horror movies because the results from the questionnaires have
shown us that the audience are not able to pay a lot to watch a horror movie so we will need
to charge the audience at a reasonable price as we will need people to come watch our movie
and be able to afford it. At a price of £4 per ticket will be our ideal price for the tickets
as we think this is reasonable and affordable for the audience to pay to watch our movie. For
the media purchasing and consumption habits, we have decided that our movie will be published
in a cinema as this was the most preferred place to watch horror movies in. Furthermore, if
the audience go to cinema they can go with any people they want such as their friends or
family or even go alone but the audience suggested that they would prefer to go to watch the
movie in cinemas with their friends.
12. More of the proposal
Finally, the last decision was made based on the preferences of the audiences
in horror movies. The audience have told us that the most prefered setting for
a horror movie would be an abandoned asylum, this has given us an ideas based
on the interests of the audience and to use this information to make the
audience want to watch our movie as we have listened to their interest and
will use it to make our horror movie better than the other. The audience were
finally asked which antagonist sacred them the most, the popular antagonist
was the dead nun from the movie, Conjuring 2. We have decided that in our
movie we will be using a dead or human look alike monster that will be a main
character in the movie as the audience told us that the nub scared them the
most because of her face, the pale skin colour, yellow teeth and the clothing
she was wearing, as she almost looked human form. So we may choose to create a
character with similar features as we know this scares the audience the most
and we will need to make the audience feel scared from the characters we use
in our horror movie as we want the audience to feel scared and enjoy the movie
as it it using different scary characters.
