2. If DevOps is the jelly
in a PB&J, what is
Value Stream
Management?
3. I asked some people.
And this what they
had to say!
It is the
making of
the
sandwich
It is the

the toast
The knife, to

that DevOps
goes on
smoothly
Agile is the Peanut Butter
and VSM is the bread. The
bread is what ties both of
those key elements
together. Topped off with
a tall glass of milk, which is
successful digital
transformation.
It is the
plate
It is the
texture and
crispiness
of the toast Peanut
butter?
The
berries in
the jelly?
6. What is value stream management?
Value stream management is a lean
business practice that helps determine the
value of software development and delivery
efforts and resources. It also helps to
improve the flow of value to the
organization, while managing and monitoring
the software delivery life cycle from
end-to-end.

7. Who is a Value Stream Manager?
A value stream manager is responsible to increase value flow across the value stream, eliminate waste, monitor
and make suggestions.
A value stream manager will use best of lean principles to:
● Create a current state value stream map of the end-to-end value stream(s).
● Use lean techniques to eliminate waste and improve process value in the short to mid-term.
● Conduct fact-based analysis of the current state map(s).
● Prepare a future state map showing what the value stream could look like in the long term.
● Create a plan to achieve the future state and lead the implementation of the plan.
● Lead and mobilize the people inside and outside of the value stream to enable the required changes.
● Lead the day-to-day activities within the value stream to ensure that current commitments are achieved
while improvements are being made.

16. Great Lance, what does all this have to do
with Software Development anyway?
By 2023, 70% of organizations will use value stream management to
improve flow in the DevOps pipeline, leading to faster delivery of
customer value. Gartner
“The other 30% will have a totally unmanaged value stream? Or, they
are, and don’t realize it? Ad-hoc and unintentional?” — Andrew
Fuqua, VP of Products, ConnectALL
Value Stream Management is “a combination of process, people, and
technology that maps, optimizes, visualizes, and governs business value
flow (including epics, stories, work items) through heterogeneous
enterprise software delivery pipelines.” — Christopher Condo, Principal
Analyst, Forrester stated at the 2020 Virtual VSM DevCon
“From 2019 onward, businesses will more regularly look in on their IT
processes to determine if what they’re doing drives value for the
business. It’s not enough to simply create a great application. If
people aren’t using it, or are getting to a certain point and then
bailing, that’s not delivering value.” — SDTimes declared 2019 as the
year of the value stream
Customers expect a digital
experience across all aspects of
your business.
Self-service is the new normal, for
employees, customers, partners,
vendors and more.
Speed is the new
currency.
17. Information flow and tracking metrics is key
Tracking the
information flow is
what really separates
mapping value
streams from
traditional process
maps. In addition to
learning about how
material flows we
also want to
understand how
information flows.

19. Just like there are DevOps Tools,
there are VSM Tools as well!
But you can only automate or adjust what the humans have decided to do!
