Future of Entertainment – SF in Film
Zorica Bogičević, film director
How humankind visually sees and interprets the universe?
The spectrum of visualization methods ranges from primitive cave drawings to art, electron
microscopy to telescopes, photography to movies, dreams to the paranormal, and optics to CGI used
in scientific modelling and simulation.
Our mind uses Medias, science, arts, and our views in politics, religion, education and commerce to
create a way that we see things around us.
What we see inside our minds?
Our eyes take light and convert the universe into an image.
What we can’t see with our eyes we see with our imagination, which is the most powerful tool for
visualization.
Is the world what we see with our own eyes or is it what we see in our minds?
Since the tools for visualization in the 21st century have become quite sophisticated (from electron
microscopes to camera probes on distant planets, from 3D architectural rendering and war
simulation software to digital art and webcams) we become able to see everything that someone
represents us as reality.
Is the world what we see with our own eyes or is it what we see in our minds?
What are the elements of art-piece?
In cave paintings and drawings, visual expression was static; there were no moving pictures, but
there was inner dynamic that moves observer deeper into the world of emotion and imaginary
movement.
Our world is deeply enriched by literature old and new. Ancient storytellers were once the only form
of entertainment around. From African witchdoctors to American Indian wise men, these word-of-
mouth storytellers gave us an engaging way to remember past events and pass them on to new
generations.
We can see the universe expanding, we can see a cell forming, but we still need to talk about it.
Development of SF?
Leonardo da Vinci was fooling around with flying machines in the 1400s.
Sci-fi master visions of the future, H.G. Well’s, The Time Machine, was published in 1898., but credit
goes to film (and Hollywood) for influencing the way most people in the new millennium view the
future. Filmmakers began to look at the future and the realm of sci-fi with relative seriousness.
Now, Film Industry has grown up, and the special effects rival the most advanced scientific
technologies of the day. The world of filmmaking has been instrumental in the development of new
visualization techniques and tools. Thanks to the ILM: Industrial Light and Magic, computers became
not only integral to how films were made and produced, but even conceived.
Silicon Graphics (SGI) is perhaps the leading maker of simulation, modelling and animation software
and hardware, combining high-performance computing and data management technologies with
advanced visualization capabilities. Silicon Graphics visualization systems provide editing,
compositing, and film mastering and restoration applications in media. SGI is the best example of the
convergence of science and entertainment. The entertainment industry and scientific community
use the same SGI applications.
Visualization is the common language that allows people from different backgrounds, training, and
expertise to engage in an immediately productive working session.
Film will continue to push the barrier, allowing us to see life on planets and imaginary futuristic
worlds that telescopes and scientific forecasting techniques can’t give us. Film doesn’t just create an
image or even a vision. It creates entire universes with unknown galaxies.
What about art?
Art is highly subjective, from both the creator and viewer perspective, where the goal was never to
capture reality, but to interpret it. Yet, art depends on cultural differences that give us “who we
are”.
The quality of the film, the camera, the lighting and development processing, are all factors that
generate varying levels of realism and with 3D computer modelling, some objects become even
more real than in real life, but on a world scale, the differences in artistic expression are, well, so
different, it’s almost hard to imagine we’re all from the same planet. To appreciate art from
countries other than our own requires some understanding of our cultural differences, and how
those differences express entirely different worldviews from our own, cause there are mutual
elements that goes to the (comes from the) collective sub consciousness.
While I was thinking about this presentation, at first I thought to present you some photographs or
video simulations, But, I meet a little girl who was playing with a dozen small branches. One small
branch was a salad, another was a soup, third one become pottery... And I’ve got an invitation to
have lunch with her... After a lunch and that presentation of child’s imagination I realised that all my
prepared videos or photographs would be pointless... Art is everywhere around us in some form.
Where is the future of entertainment?
In vivid imagination, inner dynamic that moves our mind and in good story that anyone can
understand... All that, in 3D, of course....
