Medical Devices industry
June 1999 – December 2002
Worked on development of various image processing algorithms and neural
networks for automated detection and diagnosis of skin cancer.
Worked on medical software applications for Palm OS devices.
Hardware Engineering Design Intern at Adtran
Telecommunications industry
June 2002 – August 2002
Designed switching power supplies for DSL cards
Software Engineering Intern at Adtran
June 2001 – August 2001
Wrote embedded firmware for DSL cards

Why did I join Garmin?
What is a Garmin Design Engineer, Anyway?
LOTS OF RESPONSIBILITIES!
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
•Design, debug, and test digital, analog and/or Radio Frequency (RF)
Circuits
•Prepare or direct preparation of product layouts, detailed drawings and
schematics
•Direct and coordinate manufacture of prototypes
•Plan and develop experimental test programs to verify compliance to all
applicable regulations and quality guidelines
•Analyze test data and reports to determine if the proposed design meets
functional and performance specifications
What is a Garmin Design Engineer, Anyway?
•Coordinate with other functional teams during the life cycle of the
product and be responsible for and require design modifications
•Evaluate engineering test results for possible application to
developments of other systems
•Use of software tools and test equipment to formulate and test
electronic designs
•Support production facilities in the manufacture of products
•Interface with the Test Engineers and factory personnel on the testing
and production of the products
•Perform cost/performance tradeoff analysis of different circuit options
•Investigate the usage of the latest components and technologies
•Complete documentation of the design in the required formats
NO PROBLEM!

Life of a typical
Garmin engineer
So what do I design?
Somewhere in SOP-004, we have a lot of meetings
to decide what the next, best, awesome, super-
cool, mega-fun GPS will be.
So what do I design?
OK – So we’ve met with management, marketing,
sales, tech support, and some guy from our
UK distributor.
We’ve been empowered, pow-wowed, synergized,
and otherwise thunk outside the box.
We know what we’re going to build*!
Let’s get started…

Editor's Notes

  1. Garmin is thriving because we take pride in the cooperative environment that stems from vertical integration — we design, manufacture, market and sell our products ourselves. During any given conversation about a product, you’re likely to find engineers, designers, product testers, artists, writers and salespeople sharing their thoughts. Investing in innovation has been central to Garmin’s success. The original handful of associates in 1989 grew to a work force of 1,000 just 10 years later. That number doubled within four years and eclipsed 4,000 by 2006. In 2007, Garmin’s worldwide work force topped 7,000 and showed little sign of slowing amid expansion in Europe and Asia.
  2. The next market of devices that I’ll talk about today is our Automotive market. It’s currently the fastest growing market Garmin has. Do to ease of use and capabilities Auto-routing feature will tell you how to get to a destination by searching for it or entering the address. Directions are voice prompted, and many units have the TTS feature which will speak street names. Traffic alerts through FM traffic, XM, or MSN compatibilities Many units are preloaded with detailed mapping or have the ability to add maps for other regions
  3. Garmin is the proven leader in general aviation devices with a wide variety of panel-mount, remote-mount and portable systems. Feature rich and logical to operate Designed by pilots for pilots Glass cockpits are the future of aviation Portable Devices have the convenience of going from the plane to the car w/ street mapping.
  4. Taiwan works when we don’t, we work when they are (supposed to be) sleeping.
  5. Four different lunches: Atheletics – if you’re feeling healthy Team Lunches – building comradery every quarter Heading out with coworkers Vendor Lunch – Almost a free thing!
  6. Seeking help from the experts when your own skill-set is exceeded.
