1. CREATING MULTI-MODULE COURSES WITH
SCENARIOS AND BRANCHING

2. WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT
Demo/hands-on
Simple Branching with Keywords - Captivate 2019
First level action branching – The home button and jump to slide
The illusion of branching – Triggering MSO’s
What about responsive design? – what changes in your plan?
Quick Start Projects - Free scenario and branching content to work with
Branching with Advanced Actions and Variables
Community Content with Scenarios and Branching
Start With Simple
Q&A
3. THINGS TO THINK ABOUT
Is the content right for branching?
Should people be analyzing different approaches or learning one rote process?
Planning
Draw a branching map. Use anything (PowerPoint, sticky notes, scrap paper…)
Simple is best – you don’t need every possibility
Learning from mistakes
Scenarios have paths, and often branching – how do you make sure it makes
sense?
Realistic scenarios work well but absurd fantasy can get the point across well too
4. SIMPLE BRANCHING WITH KEYWORDS
Regular branching uses Advanced Actions and Variables
Easy Branching - The file can be either responsive or regular
To trigger the behavior, slide names must be “branching” and “quiz”
To make the connections, button and group names must be identical
“completed” as a button state will automatically show on slide return
The navigation allows you to visit the topics in any order
The quiz only shows when all the topics are done
5. STEPS - SIMPLE BRANCHING WITH KEYWORDS
Simplest Version
1. Create file and apply a theme
2. Slide 1 – the opening should NOT be an action slide
3. Slide 2 – name the slide “branching”
4. Create smart shape buttons on the “branching” slide
For this example, name them module1”, “module2”, and “quiz”
These are the exact same names that the groups will need to be for the connection to
work
6. STEPS - SIMPLE BRANCHING WITH KEYWORDS
5. Add Content Slides
6. Name slide group “module1”
7. Duplicate the slide group and name it “module2”
8. Create question slides
9. Quiz group – name it “quiz”. The individual slides and button name can be
anything, but the group name and button object name MUST be “quiz”
10. Hide the visibility of the quiz button. It will show at the right time.
11. Test by previewing project or HTML5
7. STEPS - SIMPLE BRANCHING WITH KEYWORDS
A few extra steps
1. Create custom states (named “completed”) add star
2. Because of mobile devices auto play is disabled
Preferences > Start and End – auto play, uncheck
Add slide that looks like slide 1 (level 2)
8. BEST PRACTICES AND LINKS
Use smart shapes as buttons – more options
The “branching” slide must contain interactive elements
You will need to manually update your table of contents
Naming conventions – don’t mix cases on different objects
Quiz keyword only shows the hidden slide – does not take you to the quiz
slides. Need to add simple action of Jump to
For this example, we will do module/lesson in the file. For simple projects ,
this will work. Avoid Daisy-chaining because SO much needs to be redone if
content is renamed or moved. Use the LMS branching options if you want to
make a more substantial project
9. BEST PRACTICES AND LINKS
Make slide #1 a few seconds of what is shown in the start/end preferences
(Because of mobile auto play disabled)
You can do more than one set of lessons/modules and quizzes, but it’s not
recommended. Keep this very simple. For more options, you should move
onto Advanced Actions and Variables
IF you put a button at the end of your module/lesson it will need to be
continue and not go to next slide
13. BRANCHING WITH ADVANCED ACTIONS
Actions – item does a thing
Advanced Actions – contains multiple actions and possibly conditions
Variables – track the contents of an empty container
22. START WITH SIMPLE - TROUBLESHOOTING
Jump to a page with web object
Variables toggle the side menu
Multiple actions in one on the nav bar
Shows a learning objectives overlay
Plays external video gallery
Opens resources PDF
