2. GENERAL DESIGN
2.1. The paint system for corrosion protection is tabulated in the table of Painting
Materials and Systems in article 3 and article 4.
If not stated otherwise, the paints shall be in a consistency ready for use (as far
as single component paints are concerned). The paints shall brush easily at 20
o
C and shall be suitable for spraying after diluting with the appropriate thinner.
2.2. The paints shall show no thickening, hard sediments or skinning after being
stored until application in a full, tightly covered container from the date of
delivery, during this period they shall be suitable for easy application. Residues
shall be easily and completely remissible.
2.3. The paints shall possess good coverage and good leveling without sagging on
vertical surfaces. In general, curing of paints shall provide optimum smoothing
of the paint film.
2.4. The workshop painting has to be resistant to sea-water and condensation and
has to be suitable for sea transport either on deck or below deck, for a service
life until application of the finishing coat without repainting.
For local fabricated and field assemble piping, pipe supports and steel
structures finish application, Top Coat Painting shall be performed at the field
after erection
As a rule, sand blasting shall be done outside of Company property area. Sand
blasting at field shall be avoided to prevent spreading dust which may cause

5. SURFACE PREPARATION
5.1. Surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned of any material conducive to premature
failure of the paint coating. The method of surface preparation used shall be
compatible with, and suitable for, the prime coat of paint.
Following is a tabulation of acceptable cleaning and inspection methods.
SYSTEM SSPC VISUAL COMPARISON
METHOD NACB SPC-VISI
Solvent Cleaning SSPC- SP1 - -
Hand Tool Cleaning SSPC-SP2 - St. 2
Power Tool Cleaning SSPC- SP3 - St. 3
White Metal Blast Cleaning SSPC- SP5 NACB # 1 Sa. 3

Brush-Off blast Cleaning SSPC- SP7 NACB # 4 Sa. 1
Pickling SSPC- SP8 - -
Near-White Blast Cleaning SSPC- SP10 NACB # 5 Sa. 21/2
5.2. Prior to blast cleaning, oil and similar matter shall be removed with a solvent
wash (SSPC-SP1). Blast cleaning with grit or synthetic abrasives is preferred to
sand.
5.3. Prior to power tool cleaning, oil, grease and salts shall be removed by solvent
cleaning. Exercise care in the use of tools to prevent excessive roughening of
the surface and the formation of ridges and burrs. Excessive power wire
brushing produces a burnished slick surface not suitable for coating.
5.4. Only power sanding shall be when cleaning of a zinc-rich primed surface is
required prior to application of topcoat.

5.5. Prior to solvent cleaning, soil, cement splatter, salts, or any other foreign matter
(other than oil or grease) shall be removed by a steel fiber brush, wire brush, or
by scraping.
6. PAINTING PROCEDURE
6.1. Brushing, spraying, roller coating or other suitable methods shall be used
depending on the kinds of paints, surfaces and materials to be painted, or
circumstances of working area. Where surface preparation of Grade SP-3 is
applied, the first coat shall be painted with brush, as a rule.
6.2. Materials shall be mixed in the temporary warehouse or area designated in the
field. In general, approximately less than two liters of paint per person shall be
brought into the working area, except when spraying is used.
6.3. Prior to application, paints shall be well agitated to give uniform mixing.
6.4. A mixing ratio of the components shall strictly be adhered to where multi-
component paints are used.
6.5. Where thinner is used to thinning the paints, its volume shall be limited to the
extent specified by paint Vendor’s standard.
6.6. No blasting operation on steel surfaces shall be done in the following conditions
on the working area:
Surface temperatures is less than 3 o
C above the dew point
Relative humidity is greater than 85%
There is a possibility that the blasted surface will be subject to wetting before
the first coat of primer can be applied
6.7. No painting operation shall be done in the following weather conditions on the
working area:

Rain, snow, fog, or mist. Weather is forecasted to become adverse before the
paint has been dried.
Dust effects adversely due to high wind.
Ambient temperature is 5ºC or below.
Relative humidity is 85% or more.
6.8. When the surface to be painted is wet or damp, but unavoidably requires the
painting, painting shall be done after fully wiping-away moisture and completely
drying of surface.
6.9. When the temperature of surfaces of materials to be painted is adversely high
over the Vendor’s recommend value, painting operation may not be done.
6.10. The primer coat of paint shall be applied within 5 hours after of surface
preparation finished before any rusting occurs (if rust forms after cleaning, the
surface shall be recleaned before painting).
6.11. Since freshly blasted surfaces are subject to immediate corrosion, particularly in
areas of high humidity or salt atmosphere, no more blast cleaned surface than
can be primed before visible or detrimental rerusting occurs. Blasted surfaces
shall be primed no later than the end of the same work day.
6.12. No stripping of primer coat is necessary for equipment and materials which
have been shop-coated except when they require repairing. All shop or factory
primed or factory painted metal surfaces shall be inspected prior to field painting.
Damaged areas or loose, cracked, brittle or non-adherent paint shall, however,
be removed and repainted.
6.13. Surfaces shall not be recoated until the proceeding coat has properly dried or
cured. The surface may be considered ready for recoating when the next coat
can be applied without the development of paint film irregularities, such as lifting
or loss of adhesion of the undercoat. However, the minimum or maximum
drying or curing time specified by the paint manufacturer shall be the acceptable

recoat period. Paint shall not be force-dried under conditions which will cause
cracking, wrinkling, blistering, formation of pores, or which will be detrimental to
its condition or appearance. Newly painted surfaces shall be protected to the
fullest extent practicable from rain, condensation contamination, snow and
freezing until the coating has dried.
6.14. The effectiveness of painting is influenced by the performance of surface
preparation; therefore full precaution shall be paid to keep the surface in good
condition.
6.15. Painting shall be carefully done at all edges, corners, crevices, rivets, bolts and
nuts, welds, and other complex shapes, because those parts are apt to rust.
6.16. Prior to fabrication or installation, primer coat shall be applied to the parts which
are not accessible after fabrication or installation.
6.17. In the following cases, repair painting shall be done:
When any detrimental film or irregularity develops, such as lifting or loose
adhesion of the coat due to change of weather before dried.
When any detrimental film or irregularity, such as loose, cracked, brittle or non-
adherent paint or discoloration during 2 or 3 days after completion of painting.
Other unacceptable cases by Company’s inspection.
6.18. When the paint which contains Zinc is applied, stainless steel equipment and
piping in the vicinity shall be fully covered with sheet and protected from Zinc
contamination.
Touch-up paint and paint for weld seam, that are applied at field, shall be Zn-
free type.

Relative humidity is 85% or more. 6.8. When the surface to be painted is wet or damp, but unavoidably requires the painting, painting shall be done after fully wiping-away moisture and completely drying of surface. 6.9. When the temperature of surfaces of materials to be painted is adversely high over the Vendor’s recommend value, painting operation may not be done. 6.10. The primer coat of paint shall be applied within 5 hours after of surface preparation finished before any rusting occurs (if rust forms after cleaning, the surface shall be recleaned before painting). 6.11. Since freshly blasted surfaces are subject to immediate corrosion, particularly in areas of high humidity or salt atmosphere, no more blast cleaned surface than can be primed before visible or detrimental rerusting occurs. Blasted surfaces shall be primed no later than the end of the same work day. 6.12. No stripping of primer coat is necessary for equipment and materials which have been shop-coated except when they require repairing. All shop or factory primed or factory painted metal surfaces shall be inspected prior to field painting. Damaged areas or loose, cracked, brittle or non-adherent paint shall, however, be removed and repainted. 6.13. Surfaces shall not be recoated until the proceeding coat has properly dried or cured.
