The Mysterious Letters
For fourteen centuries Muslim scholars have been challenging to decipher the mysterious letters of the Quran.
In recent centuries Western scholars have joined this challenge and added several theories to the numerous
previous ones. Traditional and modern theories vary in a range of simplistic arbitrary explanations to
sophisticated mathematical calculations. Some traditional commentaries consider them as abbreviation for the
names of God in the Quran like “alr” for “al-rahman”, some other suggested that they are the names of the
suras or the marker for the separation of the suras. Non-Muslim theories have varied as well but tend to fall in
two categories, abbreviationist and redactional. However, in this article the author is trying to introduce the
mysterious letters without repeating all traditional and modern theories which could be found in the
Encyclopedia of Islam and the Encyclopedia of the Quran, in order to present his own analyze of the mysterious
letters based on some numerical patterns of the Bible and Quran.
What are the Mysterious Letters?
At the beginning of 29 suras of the Quran stands a letter or a small group of 2, 3, 4 or 5 letters called in Arabic
by several names as fawatih al-suwar, “the openers of the suras”, al-huruf al-mukatta’at, “the disconnected
letters” etc., however they are written connected but they are recited as separate letters of the alphabet.
These letters consists 14 letters of the 28 Arabic alphabet letters and interestingly they represent every
consonantal form in Arabic as it was exemplified in the early script. In the earliest Arabic script, there were no
dots to indicate the difference between letters that they were represented by the same grapheme, but had
different sounds. For example, a ‘t’ and a ‘b’ were written the same. Thus the mysterious letters compromise –
comprehensively- the graphemes of the Arabic script of the seven century. This is the first signal to forget all
abbreviation theories by which the selection of letters could be less likely paternal. We could simply ask that if
these letters are abbreviations of any names of God or the scribes or etc. why only 29 suras have them and not
the rest! We can even ask why 20 of them are counted as the verses but 10 are not? It is not surprising that
none of the theories which deny any pattern can explain or lead us to any pattern. Keith Massey in the
Encyclopedia of the Quran writes about it as following:
My own work on this issue has surfaced a previously undetected and potentially important detail about the
mysterious letters. I observed that the patterns themselves produce a set ranking within the letters. Comparing
the eleven different multiple-letter combinations in which thirteen different letters appear reveals that the order
of the letters is not random or arbitrary. One would not expect this to happen if the letters stood for sentences
or words; such a system would not have been likely able to prevent violations in a ranking. Thus, for example,
the mīm never appears before the sīn, which in turn never appears before the ayn; the lām never appears
before the alif, etc.
However, the strongest signal has been given by the Quran itself. In almost all but 3 of the suras which begin by
the mysterious letters the following verse after the mysterious letters are pointing directly to the book or its
miraculous revelation. (see table 8)

Considering all these verses alluding to a secret sign or miracle behind the mysterious letters, I have tried to
simply categorize the physical and numerical aspects of the mysterious letters in order to see if there are
indeed presenting any kind of patterns. By patterns I simply mean any element which occurs not randomly but
emphatically; pointing to a system which appears through different approaches to the mysterious letters. For
example we saw that there were 14 letters used in the mysterious letters, by considering that there are also 14
different combinations of the mysterious letters and the numerical value of the smallest one is also 14, we can
assume that there is a system or at least an emphasis on 14. In order to realize why some specific numbers are
used as a pattern in the mysterious letters we must look to the backgrounds of such numbers or systems in the
Bible and Quran itself.
Number 3, 7 and 19
The best evident for the existence of some numerical patterns in the Bible and Koran are number 3 and 7. By
referring to the text of the Bible we can find frequent occurrence of 3 and 7 either explicit as a number or
implicit as a structure (ex. the three sons of Noah). The following examples are just a few of them:
Genesis 6.10: And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Genesis 18.2: And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him…
Genesis 30.36: And he set three days' journey betwixt himself and Jacob…
Genesis 7.2: Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that
[are] not clean by two, the male and his female.3: Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to
keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.4: For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth
forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the
earth.
Genesis 31.22: And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob was fled.23 and he took his brethren with him,
and pursued after him seven days' journey; and they overtook him in the mount Gilead.
Quran 2.196: … but he who cannot find (any offering) should fast for three days during the pilgrimage and for
seven days when you return; these (make) ten (days) complete; ....
Although 3 and 7 have been frequently used explicitly in the Bible but 19 occurs only few times and has been
alluded most in Cabalistic way. By this I mean through numerical value of a word or a group of numbers or
digits. For example the numerical value of the name of Jesus in Hebrew is 397 (10+5+6+300+6+70) which in
Cabala allude to 3+9+7= 19.
Numbers 1.46: Even all they that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five
hundred and fifty. (6+3+5+5=19)
Matthew 13.8: But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold,
some thirtyfold. (100+60+30= 190)

There is still one more significant intrinsic relation between these three numbers which is based on the name
of God in the Old Testament; YHWH. As you can see this name consists 3 Hebrew letters though one of them is
repeated. By giving the ranking of the second letter “H” to the forth letter, we can find out an alternative
counting system in the Bible by which 3, 7 and 19 are equalized.

It would be clear now why number 19 occurs in the Quran only once in sura 74.30 in such a meaningful

Number 6- 9- 12
Another essential numerical system of the Bible and Quran based on number 3 is a figuratively dividing the era
of Judaism, Christianity and Islam into three periods. Basically Judaism is symbolized from 3 to 6, Christianity
from 6 to 9 and Islam from 9 to 12. This system is the most important key for deciphering some allegorical parts
of the Bible and Quran which have remained as a secret till now. Many prophecies of the Bible and Quran are
based on this system and there are more than enough examples for this code but I point only to a couple of
famous ones.
Genesis 7.6: And Noah [was] six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
Quran 29.14: We (once) sent Noah to his people, and he tarried among them a thousand years less fifty: but the
Deluge overwhelmed them while they (persisted in) sin. (1000, 50; 1+5=6)

Luke 1.26: And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
Matthew 27.45: Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
Quran 7.54: Verily your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly
established on the throne (of authority), regulating and governing all things. No intercessor (can plead with
Him) except after His leave (hath been obtained). This is Allah your Lord; Him therefore serve ye: will ye not
receive admonition?
(Note: number 6 has occurred only 7 times in the Quran and always in the same context)
Matthew 20.3: And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,…, 5:
Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.
Matthew 16.9: Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many
baskets ye took up? 10: Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
(5000 and 4000 alludes to 9) (5 and 7 breads point to 12)
Quran 17.101: To Moses We did give Nine Clear Signs: As the Children of Israel: when he came to them,
Pharaoh said to him: "O Moses! I consider thee, indeed, to have been worked upon by sorcery!
Quran 18.25: And they tarried in their Cave three hundred years and added (up to) nine.
Quran 2.185: The month of Ramazan is that in which the Quran was revealed, ( Ramazan is the 9th
month, and
also numerical value of the word Quran is 9 )
Quran 7.160: And We divided them into twelve tribes, as nations; and We revealed to Musa when his people
asked him for water: Strike the rock with your staff, so there gushed forth from it twelve springs; each tribe
knew its drinking place;
Genesis 6.3: And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also [is] flesh: yet his days
shall be an hundred and twenty years.
Deuteronomy 34.7: And Moses [was] an hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor
his natural force abated.
Note that number 12 has a unique significance in the Bible and Quran since not only it is one of the two (12 and
21) equivalent for 3 in Cabalistic system but also according to this system eventually is coupled with the last
appearance of the Messiah. I have chosen the last three examples from the Bible and Quran to show how this
code has been used even implicitly in the crucial prophecies of these books.
Daniel 12.11: And from the time [that] the daily [sacrifice] shall be taken away, and the abomination that
maketh desolate set up, [there shall be] a thousand two hundred and ninety days. 12: Blessed [is] he that
waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. (Note that here both numbers
allude to 12 while their difference points to 9: 1335-1290= 45)
Genesis 49.10: The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh
come; and unto him [shall] the gathering of the people [be]. (ShYLH: 300,10,30,5= 12)
Quran 30.2: َِتَبِلُغ

Number 14

Another numerical system based on 3 and 7 is actually multiples of 7 namely 7, 14, 21. Note that 21 is also the
second unique equivalent of 3 in Cabala. In the Bible we have several implicit and explicit references to number
14 in the Old and New Testament, like in
Exodus 12.18: In the first [month], on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread,
until the one and twentieth day of the month at even.
Ezekiel 43.17: And the settle [shall be] fourteen [cubits] long and fourteen broad in the four squares thereof;
and the border about it [shall be] half a cubit; and the bottom thereof [shall be] a cubit about; and his stairs
shall look toward the east.
Matthew 1.17 So all the generations from Abraham to David [are] fourteen generations; and from David until
the carrying away into Babylon [are] fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ
[are] fourteen generations.
Genesis 5.23: And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: (3+6+5= 14)
But also the other name of God, Elohim in Hebrew has the numerical value 14. (ALHYM: 1, 30, 5, 10, 40=14)
Number 23
The last important number which has theological value and has occurred several times in the Bible is the
number which has predicted the length of the period of the revelation of the last Book of God. It is interesting
that this number occurs not explicitly in the Quran but well implicitly.
Judges 10.2: And he judged Israel twenty and three years, and died, and was buried in Shamir.
Jeremiah 25.3: From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, even unto this day, that [is]
the three and twentieth year, the word of the LORD hath come unto me, and I have spoken unto you,
2 Chronicles 7.10: And on the three and twentieth day of the seventh month he sent the people away into their
tents, glad and merry in heart for the goodness that the LORD had shewed unto David, and to Solomon, and to
Israel his people.
Esther 8.8: Write ye also for the Jews, as it liketh you, in the king's name, and seal [it] with the king's ring: for
the writing which is written in the king's name, and sealed with the king's ring, may no man reverse.9: Then
were the king's scribes called at that time in the third month, that [is], the month Sivan, on the three and
twentieth [day] thereof; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded unto the Jews, and to
the lieutenants, and the deputies and rulers of the provinces which [are] from India unto Ethiopia, an hundred
twenty and seven provinces, unto every province according to the writing thereof, and unto every people after
their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language.
Daniel 8. 13: Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain [saint] which spake, How
long [shall be] the vision [concerning] the daily [sacrifice], and the transgression of desolation, to give both the
sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot? 14: And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three
hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.15: And it came to pass, when I, [even] I Daniel, had seen
the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man.16:
And I heard a man's voice between [the banks of] Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this [man] to
understand the vision.17: So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my
face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end [shall be] the vision.

Quran 11.36 And it was revealed to Nuh: That none of your people will believe except those who have already
believed, therefore do not grieve at what they do 37 And make the ark before Our eyes and (according to) Our
revelation, and do not speak to Me in respect of those who are unjust; surely they shall be drowned. 38 And he
began to make the ark; and whenever the chiefs from among his people passed by him they laughed at him. He
said: If you laugh at us, surely we too laugh at you as you laugh (at us). 39] So shall you know who it is on whom
will come a chastisement which will disgrace him, and on whom will lasting chastisement come down. 40 Until
when Our command came and water came forth from the valley, We said: Carry in it two of all things, a pair,
and your own family-- except those against whom the word has already gone forth, and those who believe. And
there believed not with him but a few. 41 And he said: Embark in it, in the name of Allah be its sailing and its
anchoring; most surely my Lord is Forgiving, Merciful. 42 And it moved on with them amid waves like
mountains; and Nuh called out to his son, and he was aloof: O my son! embark with us and be not with the
unbelievers. 43 He said: I will betake myself for refuge to a mountain that shall protect me from the water. Nuh
said: There is no protector today from Allah's punishment but He Who has mercy; and a wave intervened
between them, so he was of the drowned. 44 And it was said: O earth, swallow down your water, and O cloud,
clear away; and the water was made to abate and the affair was decided, and the ark rested on the Judi, and it
was said: Away with the unjust people.
As you see in one of the interesting allegorical stories of the Quran the anchoring of the Ark of Noah which had
been departed in the name of God (Besmellah) is on the Judi Mountain which has the numerical value of 23.
(JWDY: 3, 6, 4, 10). Even in another sura of the Quran it has been said of Noah: َ

that the Quran and all but one of her suras begin with the besmellah which has 19 letters. The numerical value
of the 4 words in the besmellah formula is also as amazing as following:
Yet not only the numerical values of these 4 words are related to the important numbers which we have seen
up to now, but also their frequency in the Quran follow this pattern.

As we can see number 19 has a significant role in this system and even the whole suras of the Quran is multiple
6 of 19= 114.
The word Quran itself has occurred 57 times which is 19×3
By looking at table 3 we can see that the total numerical value of the mysterious letters is 3385 with cabalistic
value of 19.
By looking at table 1 we see that 19 suras after sura 19 have mysterious letters.

At table 1 it is also clear that the mysterious letters of 19 suras has been counted as a verse of the sura.
The only sura which has not started with besmellah is the 9th sura, however this omission is compensated 19
sura later in sura 27 which has also cabalistic value of 9.
Now that we see an implication to 9 it would be interesting to know that 9 letters of the mysterious letters are
used in besmellah formula with the total value of 784 which has cabalistic value of 19
Also it seems the position of suras which has and which has not mysterious letters has to do with 9 and 12
because sum of the numbers of 29 suras which have mysterious letter is 822= 12 and sum of the numbers of 85
suras without mysterious letters is 5733= 18 = 9. Also we can see that between the first sura with mysterious
letters, sura 2 and the last one with mysterious letters, sura 68 there are 38 suras without mysterious letters,
which is multiple 2 of 19.
Now we consider some relations of the mysterious letters with the letters of the suras which they stand at their
beginning.
Letter Qaf is the first letter of the word Quran and of course we can expect a higher attention to it. It is one of
the 3 letters that have been used singular in mysterious letters and when we count the sum of its occurrence in
Sura Qaf and Sura Ash-shura we can see that in each of them occur 57 times Qaf which is 19×3. Thus in total
114 times which is equal to the suras of Quran. Remember that the word Quran occurs 57 times in the Quran
and note that 57 has a Cabalistic value of 12. Further, the sum of the verses in which Qaf occurs in Sura Qaf is
798= 19×42. Miraculously 42 is the number of Sura Ash-shura the only other sura with Qaf as her mysterious
letter. One more interesting relation between the numbers of these two suras is that sura 42 has 53 verses and
sura 50 has 45 verses which mean total of the number of the sura plus her verses is equally 95=19×5 (Note that
95 has also a Cabalistic value of 14).
Also the sum of the mysterious letters of sura 42 (Ayn, Sin, Qaf) is 98+54+57= 209 =19×11
Then we consider the most repeated group Ha, Mim, which occurs 7 times in sequence by sura 40 to 46 and as
we can see the numerical value of these 7 suras is (4+0+4+1+4+2+4+3+4+4+4+5+4+6) 49= 7×7. Further we can
simply see that numerical value of HM is 40+8=48 or 12 which as we considered is a number for the last
appearance of the Messiah. Perhaps it is not irrelevant that this is the nearest combination among the
mysterious letters to the name of Mohammad (MHMD). A wonderful sign by this group give a strong back to
this possibility when we consider again sura 42 which is the 23th sura with mysterious letter and not only this
but also the only sura with two combinations of the mysterious letters. As we saw the first combination was
pointing to 12 and the other combination again has numerical value of 230. Further by counting all the Ha and
Mim in these 7 suras we see that there are 2147 occurrences of these two letters which is 19×113.
However there are still much more of this kind of relation between mysterious letters of other suras with their
letters, I would like to consider some other numerical implications which exist in the structure of mysterious
letters and they are based on the significant numbers we already saw in the beginning. For example we can
simple see in table one that the basic formula of 3 and 7 is emphasized by having the 7th
sura as the 3rd
one
with mysterious letters. Interestingly the value of the mysterious letters of this sura is 161= 7×23.
The same signal is given in table 3 and 4; there we can see the 7th
letter has the cabalistic value of 3.
The letter Sad with the value of 90 which is used 3 times and is one of the 3 letters that is used singular has
come at the beginning of sura 7, 19 and 38 which is a multiple 2 of 19, also if we consider its all combinations
we can see the following relation based on 3 and 7:

Another interesting example of this kind of relation is the group of Alif, Lam, Mim and Alif, Lam, Ra. By
considering their position in the mysterious letters we can find clear implications to the basic structure of
mysterious letters and symbolic numbers of the Bible and Quran.

Also note that the second group of Alif, Lam, Mim stands at the beginning of sura 29, 30, 31, 32 which has the
cabalistic value of 23 (2+9+3+0+3+1+3+2)
Another example is the group which starts with Ta. As you can see this group has 3 compositions and one of
them is once repeated. The first thing we simply see is that the sum of these 4 letters is 114 which is the
number of suras of the Quran and multiple 6 of 19. Further we can see that the cabalistic value of the numbers
of the 4 suras is 29, the number of suras with the mysterious letters. Then we see the numerical value of the
first one which is the smallest value among all compositions is 14. The second and forth one are the same with
the numerical value of 19. The third one stands at the beginning of the only sura with two besmellahs, sura 27
and has the numerical value of 69 which is 23×3.

Not only paternal structure of the numerical values, but also positions, frequency, compositions and many
other aspects of the mysterious letters imply to something beyond chance and have such a harmony that it is
more than clear there is a system in this body. As the last but not the least evident I would like to take your
attention to table 2, 3, 4 and 5 in which you can see how number 14 has played a special role.

By considering table 1 to 5 we can simply see the following facts about 14.

Conclusion
By considering the Prime numbers we can observe there seems to be an intentional use of them
among significant numbers in the Bible and Quran. Not only 3, 7, 19 but also 23 and 29 are Prime
numbers. 30 suras of the Quran have the Prime number and exactly 10 have mysterious letters as
well. On the other hand 19 of them are before sura 68, the last sura with mysterious letters. Prime
Numbers are only dividable to 1 or themselves. This is very meaningful when we remember the
emphasis of the God of the Bible and Quran on His unity and uniqueness. Thus it is not irrelevant to
imagine these numbers are intentionally chosen and this system is a proof for the author of a book in
the history of mankind to prove his uniqueness and higher position to the man.
The last table shows the verses of the Quran right after mysterious letters. Not only the content of
these verses are related to this wonderful aspect of the Quran but even again we observe the
existence of this pattern along the position of the verses is emphasized. The only suras in which the
mysterious letters are not followed immediately by a relevant verse are 3, 19, 29 and 30. In 3, 19 and
29 a related verse appears with delay but in 30 there is no relevant verse at all. However only one
sura of the Quran without the mysterious letters starts with exactly a relevant verse which is exactly
used in sura 45 (4+5) 9 and 46=23×2 as well and that is sura 39 (3+9=12) which is 9 sura after the sura
missing the relevant verse and 6 before its repeat.

At the end when we consider that the frequency of some of the words in the Quran is very
meaningful, like the word “Shahr” for month which occurs 12 times and the word “Yawm” for day
which occurs 365 times, we will not be surprise to hear that the word “Hisab” for calculation and
measuring occurs in the Quran 7 times singular, 18 times defined as “al-Hisab” and 4 times undefined
as “Hisaban” which is in total 29 times. Exactly equal to the suras with mysterious letters.
