3. The most lucrative contract in FIFA belongs to Lionel Messi,
who was paid in excess of $90 million by FC Barcelona in
2020. Cristiano Ronaldo earned $70 million in salary from
Juventus FC, good for second overall, though his $47 million
in endorsements left him just $9 million shy of Messi’s $123
million total for the year. FIFA’s top earners were rounded
out by Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, Kylian Mbappé, and
Mohamed Salah, all of whom made at least $37 million.
4. MLS contracts are considerably lower than their international
counterparts. In 2019, the average player salary was
$345,867. That said, Gonzalo Higuaín of Inter Miami played
on a $8.8 million contract, the most lucrative deal in the
league. He was the only MLS player to make more than $8
million for the season, however, with just five players
breaking the $5 million mark.
