Firstly, know that you can ask a court to modify the existing support you provide. Each party can ask for a
court hearing to argue for a more-appropriate amount, given new circumstances in their lives. To succeed
in getting the amendment, one must be able to provide proof in this regard.
Either the court makes a temporary or permanent modification, based on situations like a parent’s
temporary inability to pay due to illness, a medical emergency concerning the child, loss of a job, cost of
living changes, parent disability, or changes in child support laws. Note that permanent modifications can
still be altered and will often take effect when support is no longer needed or newer circumstances appear.
But even before deciding to go to court, parents can, of their own accord, agree to modify the existing child
support setup. Looking for an amicable agreement should be the first step that parents take. For example,
they can simply inquire from a judge to approve the modification, provided that the request meet the
requirements of the state. They would simply need to justify the agreement and explain how the new
