2. An alumnus of the Pepperdine University School
of Law, John Balent has practiced law for nearly
40 years. With a focus on family law, John Balent
has helped individuals deal with challenging
family-related legal situations, including property
division in the case of a divorce.
Division of property is an often-contentious
factor in divorce proceedings. Both parties may
be concerned with how assets are divided up,
and they may feel uncertain about their financial
futures. In divorce proceedings, property to be
divided typically includes money both individuals
earned during their marriage.
3. Other factors that come into play are assets of other
types that were acquired during this same time
period, such as retirement and pension benefits,
among others.
According to California law, these types of assets
must be distributed equally between the two people
who are getting divorced, with the exception of
situations where there is a postnuptial or prenuptial
agreement in place. However, it is important that a
person have strong legal representation, particularly
if large amounts of assets are involved. This can help
ensure that the division of property is as fair as
possible.
