2. What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium that is placed into
the jawbone to support a replacement tooth. A replacement tooth, called a
crown, is then fitted onto the implant in order to replace a missing or broken
tooth. Dental implants can be used to support one crown or a fixed bridge

3. What are the advantages of dental implants?
Dental implants are much more natural looking that dentures and do not require
the support of adjoining teeth like a traditional bridge. Implants are very strong,
reliable, and can look just like your own teeth, allowing you to smile with
confidence. Also, they can repair any chewing difficulties caused by missing
teeth or dentures.

4. How much do implants cost?
In the United States, dental implants can cost between $3000­$6000 for the
implant, surgery, and crown. If bone grafting, sinus lift, or anesthesia is required
it can cost thousands of dollars more. At a specialty clinic abroad, the cost of an
implant can be as little at $1000.
When price comparing dentists, be sure to ask the total cost of the consultation,
X­rays, surgery, implant, & crown. Some clinics may advertise implants for a
very low price, and then charge for the other necessary parts of the treatment.
Other clinic offers straightforward all­inclusive pricing.

5. How many trips to the dentist will you need to make?
The procedure is most often performed in two steps that usually require two visits up to 6 months
apart. On the first visit, you will need to come in for three appointments. On the first
appointment, the dentist will perform an initial examination and explain your options for
treatment. The dentist will take panoramic X­Rays of your mouth and sometimes perform a 3D CT
scan to determine exact placement of the implant and the amount of available bone. The
following appointment, the actual surgery is performed and the implant is surgically placed.
Several days after the surgery, you will need to return for a follow up to see how you are healing
and to provide you with a temporary tooth. Typically, the clinics that specialize in working with
foreign patients should be able to complete this treatment process in 5­7 days.
After the implant is surgically placed, it will need to integrate with the bone of the jaw before the
permanent crown is placed. This process can take up to six months. After this time, you will need
to make another trip back to the dentist to have the final crown fitted and placed on the implant.
The second visit should take two appointments. In the first appointment, the implant will be fitted
with a small metal post, called an abutment, and the crown will be placed onto it. The dentist
will then have you return several days later to see how the crown fits and how the site is healing.
If necessary, the dentist can adjust the crown to allow for a more natural feeling bite.

6. Is it painful?
Generally, you will feel some soreness in the jaw for several days following the
surgery that can usually be offset by over­the­counter pain medication. If you
are nervous about the treatment and would prefer full sedation during surgery,
make sure you find a dentist who offers that option.

7. How long will implants last?
When properly placed and maintained, dental implants can last for up to 25
years. You will need to care for your new teeth in the same way as your old,
with proper brushing, flossing and regular visits to the dentist for cleaning.
