2-10 MULTIPLYING AND DIVIDING BY
     CHAPTER 2         POWERS OF TEN

EXPONENT: The number that tells me the number of
times the base is multiplied by itself.

NEGATIVE POWER OF TEN: A number in exponential
form, where the base is 10 and the
Exponent is a negative integer. EX: 10–3

Exponential form   Standard Form
105         =      100,000
104         =      10,000
103         =      1,000                  POSITIVE POWERS OF TEN
102         =      100
101         =      10
100         =      1
10–1        =      .1
10–2        =      .01
10–3        =      .001                   NEGATIVE POWERS OF TEN
10–4        =      .0001
10–5        =      .00001
THE WORLD OF   POSITIVE
MULTIPLY TIMES POSITIVE POWERS OF TEN
•You move the decimal point to same number of places to the RIGHT as the exponent
 tells you.
•Annex zeros if necessary.

                       Example: 3.45 x 105 = 345 000.

  DIVIDE BY POSITIVE POWERS OF TEN
 •You move the decimal point to the same number of places to theLEFTas the exponent
  tells you.
 •Annex zeros if necessary.

                        Example: 50.7 ÷ 103 = .0507
NEGATIVE                               THE WORLD OF

                                                                 Do it all the
                                                                opposite way!

MULTIPLY TIMES NEGATIVE POWERS OF TEN
•You move the decimal point to same number of places to the LEFT as the exponent
 tells you.
•Annex zeros if necessary.

                       Example: 679 x 10–3 = .679

  DIVIDE BY NEGATIVE POWERS OF TEN
  •You move the decimal point to same number of places to the RIGHT as the exponent
   tells you.
  •Annex zeros if necessary.

                         Example: 41.2 ÷ 10–2 = 4120.
Since MULTIPLICATION and DIVISION are opposite (inverse) operations, it is logical that
   the decimal point will move in opposite directions.

     Division by POSITIVE powers of ten 1.0 Multiplication times POSITIVE powers of ten

                                          LEFT   RIGHT

     Since POSITIVE is opposite (inverse) to NEGATIVE, it is logical that the decimal points
     will move the inverse way.
