First LEED Silver certified building for Los Rios Community College
District at Sacramento City College, Davis Center
Davis, CA, August 21, 2013 — Los Rios Community College District received confirmation that the Sacramento City
College, Davis Center has been granted LEED Silver certification by the United States Green Building Council
(USGBC). This certification recognizes buildings that are designed, built and operated to meet stringent energy
efficient and sustainability standards. The Davis Center is the first building in the District to receive such a
certification.
Master planned, programmed and designed by Stafford King Wiese Architects, the Sacramento City College, Davis
Center is located in the UC Davis West Village Development. Final construction of the facilities and dedication of
the center occurred in January of 2012. Phase one of the Davis Center spans 22,000 square feet and includes a
learning resource center, computer labs, classrooms, administrative and student services spaces. The center is
master planned to eventually include 80,000 square feet of academic space, which will be constructed over three
phases. Future phases will include additional classroom space, a bookstore and laboratory spaces. Residential
living, dining and civic amenities included in the West Village master plan round out the Davis Center campus
experience.
Sustainability and the reduction of environmental impact were priorities in the design of the Davis Center. The
Stafford King Wiese Architects Team incorporated solutions consistent with the USGBC’s LEED Silver certification.
The following are a few of the innovative design strategies and construction practices that contributed to the
project’s overall sustainability:
• The building’s east-west orientation maximizes the daylighting of interior spaces and takes advantage of
the site’s wind patterns
• Trees used as shade elements in the parking lot in order to minimize the heat island effect
• Light-wash and energy efficient exterior lighting in the parking area
• Landscaping choices, such as drought-tolerant vegetation that require less water, drip irrigation and
recycled mulch
• Shade structures control daylight entering the building, minimizing heat gain, reducing glare and
improving lighting conditions
• High-efficiency lighting exceeding Title 24 lighting compliance requirements by 23 percent

• Task lighting in the classroom and administrative spaces allow occupants to adjust the lighting to their
specific needs
• Low-flow plumbing fixtures, including ultra low-flow toilet fixtures and sinks with automatic controls,
reduce water usage by 30 percent as compared to a traditional building
• The mechanical usage target of beating Title 24 energy requirements by at least 20 percent
• Shut-down of central equipment during off-hours, including low voltage lighting control system to
automatically shut down all lighting after hours
• Alternative transportation is encouraged by ready access to bicycle parking and the building’s location
near a proposed bus stop
In addition to physical design features, the curriculum of the Davis Center emphasizes sustainability, presenting an
opportunity for the buildings themselves to become part of the educational process. The sustainable design
strategies are functional and expressive aspects of the college experience.
