Task 7: Evaluation

When I made this picture I was content. I managed to create the same facial expression and a similar
reflection in the glasses, however when removing the background definition was lost around the
outside. This could have also been caused by the camera being taken out of focus. When taking an
image in the future I hope to improve these mistakes in my next photography shoot. The blur could
have also been due to the camera’s maximum quality. Another problem with my photo is that
Jonathan has tilted his head in the wrong direction; however this isn’t a major problem as in the
future I can take multiple pictures until the right position is made.

I took the photo in front of a plain blue wall so that the background can be easily removed and
replace for black. I added the reflection off the glasses and removed the background on Photoshop
so that I could make my photo as much like the original as possible. To remove the background I
used the “quick select tool” to select Jonathan. I then right clicked and selected inverse and deleted
it. I then used the “paint bucket” to fill in the background black. To make the reflection I made
another layer and changed the colours on the panel on the bottom left to a light blue and a darker
blue. Then with the “gradient” tool I made a blend between the two colours. I then turned down the
opacity of the layer down to 50%, used the “lasso” tool to select the lenses in the glasses, right
clicked and selected inverse and finally pressed delete. I kept the opacity low to give the impression
of reflection. On the camera I used the portrait setting and used the wheels on the end of the
camera to adjust the focus and zoom. I have learnt that the very end wheel controls the focus but I
am still not sure how to use it. The screen showing the image is small and when it is enlarge it seems
a lot less focused.

Strengths:

        Good reflection in the glasses
        Right light angle
Similar clothes

Weaknesses

       Faded edges
       Quality of image
       Not the same age
       No hat

I am pleased with my image but feel in my next photography shoot I could improve. If I did this
picture again I would find an older man to take the picture of and try harder to focus the image. I
could also make a more similar angle to the character so they are facing the right way as well as
wearing the hat. I think my recreation was successful but could have been more so by improving the
list of weaknesses.
